Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary, MoSPI, addressed the plenary session on“Indian methodologies for issues before social sciences” during the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) at Nalanda University, Rajgir, on 26 October 2026.
He emphasised that development measurement must go beyond GDP to include unpaid care work, employment quality, social inclusion, human well-being and environmental sustainability. The valedictory session of the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) concluded today at Nalanda University, bringing together leading scholars and policymakers to reflect on the role of social sciences in India’s development journey.
Hon’ble Governor of Bihar, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain Ji, emphasised the importance of social science research in strengthening public trust, improving disaster resilience and shaping people-centred governance. He called for stronger research collaboration, particularly on Bihar’s development priorities, migration and livelihoods.
Professor S. Mahendra Dev, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, highlighted India’s potential to contribute to the global development agenda beyond 2030 and underscored the relevance of Nalanda’s intellectual heritage to contemporary research.
Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, Vice Chancellor, Nalanda University and Chairman, IASSI, stressed the need to connect evidence-based research with policymaking, community realities and inclusive development.
Professor Alakh N. Sharma, Director, Institute for Human Development, called for greater interdisciplinary collaboration, stronger institutional partnerships and expanded opportunities for young researchers.

My thoughts on Indian methodologies for social science research in India at Nalanda University conference on 26 Oct 2026.
It was a privilege to hear Shri S. Gurumurthy Ji’s thought-provoking reflections at the 25th Annual IASSI Conference at Nalanda University.
With his characteristic depth and insight, he highlighted the importance of understanding Indian society through its own civilisational experiences, empirical realities and rich knowledge traditions. His reflections on the Rishi–Krishi tradition and the role of family, culture and community in sustaining food, home and social security offered valuable perspectives on the relevance of India’s lived experiences to contemporary social science.
His address was a meaningful reminder of the importance of re-examining established frameworks and drawing insights from India’s own intellectual heritage.

The 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI) at Nalanda University featured a plenary panel on “Education and Knowledge Systems”, bringing together experts to discuss educational reform, learning outcomes and the evolution of knowledge systems.
Chaired by S. R. Hashim, former Member Secretary of the erstwhile Planning Commission and former Chairman of UPSC, the session featured Rukmini Banerji, Senior Advisor, Pratham Education Foundation; D. Venkat Rao, Professor and Dean, Nalanda University; R. Clive Landis, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal Professor of Cardiovascular Research, The University of the West Indies; Balaji Parthasarathy, former Professor, IIIT Bangalore; and Ganti S. Murthy, Professor, IIT Indore.
Brigadier Sushil Bhasin, Military-Inspired Leadership Coach, offered special remarks on leadership and learning.
The discussion explored improvements in foundational literacy and numeracy, persistent learning gaps, early education and teacher support. It also examined the influence of colonial legacies on educational practices and knowledge production, emphasising critical thinking, meaningful learning, inclusive education and the role of technology in shaping contemporary knowledge systems.

Plenary Session 5 | Health and Nutrition in India’s Development
As part of the 25th IASSI Annual Conference, Nalanda University hosted Plenary Session 5 today at Vishwamitralaya, focusing on “Health and Nutrition in India’s Development.”
The session was chaired by Prof. Achin Chakraborty, Visiting Professor, IIT Kharagpur, and Honorary Professor, Institute for Human Development, Ranchi. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Sanjay Zodpey, President, Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI), and Pro-Chancellor, PHFI Institute of Public Health Sciences, Delhi.
The panel featured Prof. Ashish Pandey (IIT Bombay), Prof. Simantini Mukhopadhyay (Visva-Bharati), Dr. Swati Dutta (IHD) and Prof. Arijita Dutta (University of Calcutta).
Discussions examined the challenges of translating public welfare policies into effective outcomes, with emphasis on persistent inequalities, nutrition, universal healthcare, social protection and the role of local governance in advancing inclusive development.
The session underscored the importance of evidence-based approaches and effective programme delivery in improving health and nutrition outcomes across India.

Plenary Session 6 | Culture and Development
Nalanda University hosted an important plenary panel today as part of the 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Association of Social Science Institutions (IASSI), bringing together distinguished scholars to explore the role of culture in shaping economic growth and inclusive development.
The session was chaired by Professor Asanga Tilakaratne, Emeritus Professor of Buddhist Studies, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Badri Narayan Tiwari, Vice-Chancellor, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai. Prof. S. Mahendra Dev, Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM), was also present on the occasion.
The panel featured P. Kanagasabapathi, Jyoti Verma, Professor Dipankar Sengupta and Professor David Akombo, offering perspectives across economics, psychology, cultural studies and the social sciences.

नालंदा जिले के राजगीर स्थित नालंदा विश्वविद्यालय में चार दिवसीय भारतीय सामाजिक विज्ञान संस्थान संघ (IASSI) की शुरूआत हो गई है।
उद्घाटन सत्र को संबोधित करते हुए सांख्यिकी एवम् कार्यक्रम कार्यान्वयन मंत्रालय के सचिव सौरभ गर्ग ने कहा कि इस सम्मेलन का लाभ नीति निर्माण के साथ देश- विदेश के छात्रों को शोध के क्षेत्र में मिलेगा।
वहीं , इस सत्र में IIM पूर्व प्राध्यापक रविन्द्र एच ढोलकिया, मानव विकास संस्थान के प्राध्यापक जी सी मन्ना आदि विद्वानों ने अपना वक्तव्य दिया। इस वार्षिक सम्मेलन का समापन 28 अक्टूबर को राज्यपाल के विदाई भाषण के साथ किया जाएगा।

Indian Methodologies for Social Sciences | 25th IASSI Annual Conference
Nalanda University hosted a special panel today on “Indian Methodologies for Issues Before Social Sciences”, chaired by Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Nalanda University and Chairman, IASSI.
The panel featured Shri S. Gurumurthy, Chairman, Vivekananda International Foundation and Editor, Thuglak; Shri Saurabh Garg, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India; and Prof. Ravindra H. Dholakia, Former Professor, IIM Ahmedabad.
The discussion explored the relevance of Indian social and cultural contexts in research, the importance of empirical evidence, and the need to adapt analytical frameworks to India’s distinct economic and social realities. It also highlighted the role of traditional knowledge systems, non-market indicators of well-being and data-driven research in strengthening evidence-based policymaking.
The session underscored the importance of context-sensitive social science research in addressing contemporary development challenges.

Nalanda University signed another important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus, yesterday on the sidelines of the 25th IASSI Annual Conference, opening new avenues for academic cooperation between India and the Caribbean.
The MoU was signed by Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, Hon'ble Vice Chancellor, Nalanda University, and Professor R. Clive Landis, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Cave Hill Campus, UWI, in the presence of Prof. S. Mahendra Dev, Hon'ble Chairman, Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM).
The partnership will foster interdisciplinary research, teaching, faculty and student exchanges, and collaboration in the humanities, cultural studies, and creative and performing arts.
The agreement advances Nalanda University’s commitment to international academic engagement, South–South cooperation, and meaningful intellectual and cultural exchange.
