I kinda don’t care anymore if I get flamed for this. But I feel like you are being very dishonest if you are ignoring the issues gamers have with the recently announced God Of War game. RANT BEGINS HERE📝 Gamers are NOT upset that a game has a female lead. There are countless games that have released in the past with female leads and no one cared / they embraced them. Gamers are NOT upset that characters are not sex objects in games. So to automatically label someone a “Chud” or “Sexist” or any other thing for voicing their complaints about a game is comepletely dismissive and is avoiding the topic at hand. People are incredibly good at pattern recognition. And to tell us that there isn’t a pattern that is commonly occurring with modern video games (2020-Current). Then you are either turning a blind eye to the issue or you know the pattern is occurring and you just don’t want to say anything negative for fear of backlash. The PATTERN people are noticing are the following - Traditionally male lead franchises are being gender swapped. Or a previously dominant male character is nerfed by any or all opposite gender characters. - Games are now treated like a checklist for diversity and although more representation is a good thing… but when the outcome is always the same (the white male is always the antagonist) it really emphasizes that it is not true representation and it is actually just an agenda being pushed. And it’s obvious… 👀 - if there are 2 sides of a spectrum - one side is Hyper Sexualized characters and the other side is very unattractive or non visually pleasing characters. It is obvious that mainly western studios are purposefully creating character designs that are so afraid of being anywhere close to hyper sexual characters that they ON PURPOSE make their character designs dull, and “average looking”. The thought behind this is to show that you can have representation in video games of “average looking people”. Filling your game with attractive characters does not mean that people who do not identify as “attractive” do not / should not exist. Gaming is a form of entertainment and escapism. People want to escape their reality when they play games or look for forms of entertainment. There is a reason why movies and tv shows cast attractive people to play all their characters (even the “best friend” characters). And it’s because people like looking at attractive people. It is nothing to project. It doesn’t mean that traditionally un attractive people don’t deserve to exist. It’s just again a form of escapism. The designs are glaringly obvious. You compare the character model to the motion capture actor and it’s not even close. Then you see designs from non western studios and you see just how much better their designs look. It’s not a technology issue or a lack of talent in western studios. It’s 100% a conscious decision made by corporate HR individuals as an attempt to not offend anyone. When your aim is to offend no one you also appeal to no one. - also the method of race swapping characters to increase “representation”. But what about the fans of said character who want to see that character represented as they know them from previous iterations or source materials? Do those fans not deserve their representation? I am all for more representation in games but it should feel natural and not forced like some arbitrary checklist. If you want to include _____race / gender etc then why not create a new character or find an already established character of that _____race gender? Don’t those stories deserve to be told? SUMMARY: I get why a lot of you just follow the “mainstream opinion” , you want to fall in line with potential partners / brands etc. And you can defend this stuff as hard as you want until you are blue in the face. But you will not change the facts These games / media are not doing well financially. Players are not interested, and the effects will be felt in the bottom line.
