Trump’s week keeps getting worse. At 1 a.m., a judge he appointed tore apart his press ban and ordered the White House to hand the passes back. By 6 a.m., reporters were still standing outside the gate, and one watched a Secret Service agent take her badge again. Some of Trump’s outside advisers are now pushing him to take over the midterms, and a friend who’s known him since military school told the Atlantic his choices come down to “martial law, or step aside.” Then Xi Jinping landed in Washington holding China’s grip on Iran’s oil, Russia’s war economy and the world’s critical minerals, plus a set of American F-35 parts China still hasn’t returned. And when two B-1 bombers roared over the welcome ceremony, Trump shut his eyes and winced while Xi stood completely still. The internet noticed. Overnight, a Trump-appointed judge issued an order restoring access to CNN/MSNOW/Politico journalists locked out of the White House by our petulant and constitutionally tone-deaf president.
But this morning, amazingly, they were still DENIED entrance. The court was clear that the First Amendment does not permit the President to ban news outlets because he is mad about their reporting. This is classic censorship, prior restraint and “viewpoint discrimination.”
What began as a blatant Due Process and First Amendment violation now threatens to become a test of whether the president can disregard court orders and act as a law unto himself.
