Could we use deep learning to personalize cancer treatment schedules? We explore this in castrate-resistant prostate cancer, in a new paper out in Cancer Research @CR_AACR: doi.org/10.1158/0008-5472.CA…
A tweetorial (or should I now say an eXposition?) [1/11]

What does an Oxford mathematical biologist specialising in modelling cancer treatments do after completing their PhD? Why, go and do research at medical school, of course.
Kit Gallagher, Schmidt Science Fellow at Harvard Medical School, is your man.
We present a new type of biomarker - based on a math equation rather than a genetic or transcriptomic assay.
By capturing dynamic patterns in PSA from the 1st treatment cycle, we can predict prostate cancer outcomes across disease settings, enabling personalized drug schedules.
In patients with #ProstateCancer receiving #AdaptiveTherapy, mathematical biomarkers from first-cycle prostate-specific antigen (#PSA) dynamics predicted time to progression and overall survival better than standard PSA metrics.

Not every patient benefits equally from adaptive therapy, and some may not benefit at all. How do we tell them apart? @StroblMAR created this graphic to show how our biomarkers can answer this question!
I'm excited to be starting at a Schmidt Science Fellow - I'll be applying my maths background in genomics to characterize the role of chromosomal instabilities in cancer evolution. Do reach out if you're interested in quantitative tools for single-cell and longitudinal genomics!
We are thrilled to introduce our 2026 Schmidt Science Fellows — thirty-two incredible scientists set to embark on the next step of their interdisciplinary journey with our support. schmidtsciencefellows.org/ne… @schmidtsciences

September is #OvarianCancer Awareness Month. At the @MoffittNews Nikon Center of Excellence, we’re tackling ovarian cancer by creating 3D tumor “patient avatars” outside of the body.
These models preserve the tumor microenvironment, helping us study drug responses and guide more personalized treatments.
Special thanks to collaborators @ErinGeorgeMD, @RMWenham, @MoffittGYNONC, @NikonInst.

Why does this heterogeneity occur in adaptive therapy, and is a 'one-size-fits-all' protocol best for patients across this spectrum of responses?
Join Kit Gallagher (@SciKit_G) at #AACR25 as he shares a new mathematical biomarker that can be used to predict treatment outcomes from adaptive therapy.

Two wheels good.
'Make yourself useful' is one of those English phrases that frustrated parents might bark at their kids. But sometimes it is directed at mathematicians. @SciKit_G is more than up to the task.
Thanks for visiting @WCMBlog - it was fantastic to see how reciprocal cell fate transitions are driving disease progression in leukemia, and I'm excited to see how mathematical & mechanistic learning approaches can inform cancer care over the next decade! @OxUniMaths
Thanks @MoffittNews for the $50k pilot grant to develop 2nd line treatment options for HR proficient Ovarian cancer patients (~85% relapse on 1st line chemo), through biomarkers predictive of toxicity and modeling of synergistic drug scheduling & microbiome activation! #mathonco
The winners of the 12th @imoworkshop on Toxicity are #TeamRed! Led by the synergistic combination of @ErinGeorgeMD @StroblMAR & Paulo Rodriguez. Congratulations on a unanimous win!! Excited to see where this project goes with the $50K winning prize from @MoffittNews #MoffittIMO

This remarkable study essentially validated our earlier finding in ALK+ NSCLC with @RobertVanderVe1 and @CancerConnector that resistance is acquired through a trajectory rather than a switch nature.com/articles/s41467-0….
Published today! We found that cancer cells adapting to drug treatments don't simply switch from a sensitive to resistant state; instead there's a ‘resistance continuum’ of resistant phenotypes with epigenetically reprogrammed states. 🧵⬇️
