There comes a point you have to ask yourself... what even do these engines do that the AI won't be able to do better if the tech becomes as capable as they think it will be? And what does the AI do? What is the work flow? There are so many wishy washy sentiments about what AI dev will be. "It'll just be easier, you'll just tell the AI what you want without any need for an interface." Does anyone even really know what they're aiming for? More than anything it feels like a move against Roblox, maybe an over response. This area is so unexplored it's impossible to say who's making the right move and who's making the wrong moves. I hate to say it, and I really like Unity, I use it myself, but the talent drain is pretty obvious, and you have to figure there's some at Unreal as well. There just isn't much top tier talent at any company any more to make these new tools and the new tech sing, that's a big part of this problem that's the elephant in the room. Lots of people left for AI, or they just got burned out during this awful era in gamedev. All the systems of competency that held this industry together, be it at Unity or Unreal, or wherever, everything's kinda fallen apart. And that's a BIG part of why everyone wants to bet on AI, and why everyone glazes AI, they need AI to do the work ,they need the AI to amplify their coders, because we just don't cultivate great talent any more. Point is, this conversation is so much larger than AI, it's cultural, it's about the fundamental state of gamedev and the people that do gamedev. The big engines have passed hands, we don't have the same firebrands that did the big moves early on, and everyone is just trying to just stay afloat, not creating big new tech because they're excited about it. Anyway, it's just kinda sad. Like the entire industry lost its mojo and they're just hoping having a copywrite theft machine in the AI in their pocket that's going to jumpstart everything. There's a very real possiblity that gamedev in 2 years is just endless waves of clones of clones of clones if we don't find a way to curate the massive waves of slop and if people get so enamored by the AI's ability to generate existing logics, that no one bothers to make cool new stuff.

I've watched Peanut for awhile now, ever since his arc raider streams started and I have never seen him be anything but super nice and make slightly edgy jokes that being said I am a kid of the 90's i could just be booming out over here. I don't understand the hate he gets.

"Now everybody accepts iPad art and digital music." Well that depends entirely on how much the artist puts into the art right? Some people would just copy paste large forms of other people's works, or use heavily automated tools to generate their works, this caused the digital art scene to looks stale and "samey'. I think what often happens, is people become so enamored by once difficult tasks becoming automated, that dopamine fires in people's brains, and they start to value the output more than they should due to emotional response to the process being fun and easy. There are cool tools being made with AI, and crazy awesome systems and automations, but at the same time, certain elements do not form a cohesive whole when generated with too much AI. People keep saying "code is solved" or that AI can just clone this or that software in a few days. But that's largely because it's sampling existing code bases of fans emulating existing features. The hype never lives up to the actual product, but people don't care, they just keep speaking to how amazing AI is. AI IS AMAZING, but not as amazing as people claim it to be, and until people start to try to have a more measured take on its limits and not overindulge in it, people aren't going to be producing work with AI that surpasses the work we were doing before this AI era. The thing limiting AI the most right now, is the overhype of AI.

"his past behaviour doesn't align with their standards?" but multiple death threats to a staff member and toxicity in every game and post game is? these devs are fucking delusional, have they not played their own game?

This. It's not complicated. Epic Games Store is trying to do everything Steam does. They should be trying to do just one damn thing better.

I appreciate your concenrs. Let me say, you have NO IDEA how complex and insane it is here. I think like you and want whats best for our country, this gets complicated by politics, but it's not about politics. It's about the Leftist americans and the rest of us, they exist apart from us, they don't think of us as countrmen if that makes sense. It makes perfect sense how you guys live, we once lived like that. You want to make good games, so you want to work with other people who want to make good games, and you want to work with the best of the best to make the best games. You also love your country and want the best for China, this means you work with others and help them for the greater good for your nation. We once had that here too. Now we have a new element where many of us think the rest of us are "racists", which is a silly concept that's been blown out of proportion to other, and make other look evil. You can only kind of understand this if you haven't lived it. For you, you think "Silly Americans" and it is silly. Some of us have actually had our lives destroyed over this nonsense. These people use these accusations to get ahead of others, they don't hav eto work hard, they dont have to be the best game creators to get their jobs, they don't want to work with the best, they don't want to work hard to make the best game, or to make a better society for Americans. They just want to call other people racists and have easy jobs where they don't have to work hard. It is so complex and people do not even understand the ramifications of what they do, they act like children. Anyway, crazy reply I know, but you have no idea how weird it is living in America right now with all these morons making life a living hell for the same people who just want a strong America with hard workers and principle.

👍💯💯 EXACTLY People should express themselves, they should make their art, and be free to be themselves. These SHIT HEADS preached this, while silencing and destroying lives. It is DISGUSTING and they shoudl be fucking ashamed. But they're not capable of shame. They've made their bed and they will lay in it. This is karma for the past 10 years they subjected their coworkers and customers over this dreadful culture war.

I don't think it really matters. If this side wins or that side wins, often it just shows more incompetence and apathy. The left is falling apart because of internal strife. The right is falling apart because of internal strife. We need the entire political aparatus to fall apart and just start backing people running for government who are competent and will make the world a better place. I'm glad many politicians are aging out, because they represent so much hate and division in this world. More than worrying about this side winning or that side winning, we need social wins in the arena of common ground and shared purpose. When we all share that goal, THAT is when the world will begin to get better. When everyone is on either side, and we are putting all our efforts into destroying each other, in that world no one wins.

Great insight here. Beyond this, it's a cultural issue. I engage with Easterners from time to time, and their conversations regarding gamedev they are arguing about lerps, and math functions and speaking to the nuts and bolts of game design. They understand what makes up video games. This isn't sppoken to enough in the spheres of the west, and it's actually alarming as hell. But the greater dialogue does not reflect actual game development because the space of gamedev has been overtaken by people who do not game dev. Studios have devolved into people playing house and fighting cultural issues, because frankly... they don't know how to make games, they only know how to fight culture wars, so that's what they busy themselves with. It's not that the Western games industry chooses not to make games, they have FORGOTTEN how to make games. And to this day we are not fighting for that core fix, we are still arguing cultural issues. Until we start discussing actual gamedev, the processess of finding the fun, and elevating developers who want to make good games and know how to make good games, the dialogue and the industry will remain in the gutter.

I agree with you. Black Myth Wuckong was created by seasoned proffesionals who studied their craft, and worked to provide a game that told stories they deeply cared about for a medium they deeply cared about. Developers in the west do not understand what it means to compete, they don't understand what it means to execute at a high elvel and to hold themselves to standards year over year to produce products that execute at that high a level across that many disciplines. While the East learned to push themselves for execelnce and higher levels of art, the West grew fat and docile, allowing goofballs to shame them into giving them jobs, because they enjoyed the back scratching and the love bombing. Westerners are soft and coddeled now, they don't even know how to fix the industry because they are to damned soft to do anything about it. I'm fucking ashamed to be lumped in with these incompetent, lazy idiots as a Wesern developer.

People don't understand. The team that made that game were cutting their teeth for years. These were bright coders and designers and animators working in challenging environments for years prior to working on this game. We haven't had meritocratic sytsems funneling quality coders and other crafters of digital logics into western studios for over a decade now. We're not starting from scratch here, Endymion. We are 4 or more years behind from being able to create these games if we get our act together RIGHT NOW. Instead the big publishers are simply sitting on their hands hoping the AI magicallly supercharges their teams and makes better games. It's acutally insane to see that no one is takign action to fix our broken society. No one is reaching out to find the talent or push hard working people to start new teams and studios. The entire western industry are a throng of incompetent goofballs all shellshocked just hoping as if by magic somehow things take shape and the industry becomes saved. Honestly, everyone is so far removed from working teams and markets and ecosystems of quality development that no one really knows what to do. We're an industry of zombies, just shuffling about, dead inside. It's fucking sad.

we used to ask “is the game fun?” now we ask “was the developer morally approved by the internet?” gaming communities have evolved. just backwards.

I liked my first Star Wars meme the other day, and BOOM out of nowhere I'm getting hit with tons of Star Wars tweets with hundreds of thousands of views. HAS THIS SECRET STAR WARS COMMUNITY ALWAYS EXISTED!? WHY HAVEN'T I BEEN DORKING OUT THIS ENTIRE TIME!? No... this is a similar circumstance to the Malfoid meme of Harry Potter with fan driven repurposing. People are recannonizing Stars Wars to make Anakin a cultural icon for right wing views. Mixed feelings about AI, and not so much towards the Prequels (it's like sand, it's grating and gets everywhere). But the memes themselves are often hilarious.

It does, but it doesn't matter. You can start any time, but to become truly good at gamedev takes many years, even if you want to specialize, but that said, even if you're 50 you've got lots of years in you! There is no barrier that says "You must be young with superhuman twitch reflexes to be good at gamedev". You can work your ass off and apply yourself at any age! I've been making games for a long time now, but I only started learning code like 5 years ago, and I feel like i'm kicking ass at it. Don't listen to what anyone says, the world is full of idiot noise from posers trying to fit in with general, ill-formed sentements. Games are whtaever you make them, there is no blueprint, there is no standardized methodology (that works anyhow). Anyone can make a good game, it just takes hard work. But you do need to find that chord of systems and play that draw on your own unique tastes and talents, but ultimately culminates into something others will enjoy too. And the world is shitty and many will flippantly do everything they can to destroy you and your project. But what can you do? Worst thing you can do is harp on it. So just work your ass off, make cool shit, and hope for the best.

If you can just type and write a book, why aren’t we all established authors? The ease of making games doesn’t suddenly make us good at making them.

Jason Schreier and the insiders who still follow him represent all the negative forces that fed off body of gaming over the past decade. They conjured a horrific fiction of reality where all unlike them were evil, took total control of gaming, and all of gaming fell with them.
