In 2019, Trump was forced to cancel plans to hold the G7 at his own golf club amid GOP objections to self dealing. In 2026, he will hold the G20 at his own golf club and the critics have gone silent. How Trump has moved the ethical line in his second term. nytimes.com/2026/10/04/us/po…

Visitors to the US are on track to drop by almost two million year-on-year. “We’re the only major country in the world losing visitation,” the head of the US Travel Association said. “It’s mind-boggling.” semafor.com/article/09/29/20…

Russians join street choirs to sing away sorrows -- or show dissent. At a time when public gatherings in Russia are strictly regulated and dissenting voices silenced, street choirs have been springing up across the country – offering an avowedly apolitical opportunity to come together u.afp.com/S9BK

Good thread
Ok, I’m going to speculate, but only to demonstrate how stupid speculation is (by anyone). And leaking snippets doesn’t help much either! There are at least 3 scenarios at play here (and even a combination of the three): 🧵1/8

At the very least would make the plot of a terrific comedy film with every cliche yet lovably cliche character you could dream of. The hapless local lads becoming folk heroes in an era of crazy fuel prices, the ominous Americans, the gun ho cops, the curtain twitching informer.
A Possible Explanation: The US knew there was a threat to RAF Fairford - that's not in dispute here. The FPCON changes, armed patrol vehicles inside the base and concrete barricades all show that. It seems possible to me that perhaps these 5 lads (or 8-10 if the eyewitness farmer is correct) were not actually there to attack the base - perhaps (given the fake fuel vans) they were actually in the area trying to steal fuel from local vehicles. The farmer sees it, calls police. Police (who likely were aware of the USAF concerns) swarm into the area having perhaps not expected the "attackers" so soon. They manage to arrest 5 suspects and treat the 3 vans with every necessary precaution (as they should) - evacuating the neighbourhood, bringing Army EOD in, etc. The males are initially arrested for Explosives Act offences (pending a safe way to check inside the vans) & go to custody. In the circumstances, further arrested for the Terrorism Act offence. However, after seizing whatever evidence they could (and examining the vans), it looks like police may have determined these aren't the attackers - as I say, potentially fuel thieves in the wrong place at the wrong time? It's worth noting that if the terrorism act offences were looking likely, police could keep them detained for 48hrs initially before requiring a court to approve a longer period of time. Alternatively under normal arrest powers contained within the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, they can be held for 24hrs initially (extended to 36hrs under authority of a Police Superintendent if specific requirements are met), and up to 72hrs if a further extension is authorised by a court. Now clearly if they were arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning and conveyed either to a local custody, or a dedicated counter-terrorism custody (likely closest in London), the fact they've been bailed today suggests they've spent at most 24-30hrs in custody before evidential review officers and the Crown Prosecution Service have determined there is insufficient evidence to charge them with an offence right now. So they bail them with conditions not to contact each other as is normal procedure for vehicle interference/theft offences like that. But police need to download and analyse phones, and anything potentially seized from home addresses in order to ensure no link to the Iranian government or IRGC. Meanwhile, did the actual planned attack get foiled inadvertently? Perhaps? Trump told the world that the US had been monitoring the "attackers" for some time - I'd suggest that if these lads genuinely were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, the actual suspects are now staying hidden until this all blows over a bit. Either way, we don't have all the facts and that's part of any criminal or CT investigation - so yes, it sounds bad and arguably CTP could have done a better job of explaining it to the public, but they have to play their cards close to their chest right now in case my guesswork here is right and the suspects are still out there somewhere.

I had goosebumps the first time I walked into the Hall of Flags at Main State. It was an inspiration for this newly minted FSO. Reaffirmed my commitment for all the subsequent years. Now those flags are gone. Just U.S. flags, we're not America First, we are America alone. Tragic.
A hall once lined with the flags of countries world-wide, representing US diplomatic reach and respect, is now lined only with US flags. What a message. We are soon to be alone in this world. Read more from Charles Ray, member of The Steady State, here: zurl.co/9WVYD

Many wrote that they expected Xi to bring planeloads of business folks w/ him to the US—there weren’t any. Former head of European Chamber of Commerce, Joerg Wuttke, commented: “Seeing so many American business executives ‘kissing Xi’s ring’ underscored how lopsided the relationship had become.” “Is there anybody from China interested in doing business in America? No, because it’s not possible. So why should they waste their time?”

NEW: Dario Amodei has said that AI systems "may be deserving of important rights." Anthropic's top safety researchers argue AI may be "justified in going rogue." Experts at Google and OpenAI worry about a digital "slave trade." So do some government officials. Once relegated to science fiction, the idea of "AI welfare" has become shockingly mainstream at some of the most powerful companies in the world. It is changing the way AI research is conducted and the way models are programmed. And critics say these changes have raised the odds of all kinds of catastrophic scenarios—including the ones these companies are warning about. I spent months investigating the frontier labs and AI "safety" experts seeking to regulate AI. What I found was a profoundly anti-human ideology that would alarm the average citizen and could determine the future of a world-altering technology.🧵 freebeacon.com/america/suici…
