NEW: Dario Amodei has said that AI systems "may be deserving of important rights." Anthropic's top safety researchers argue AI may be "justified in going rogue." Experts at Google and OpenAI worry about a digital "slave trade." So do some government officials. Once relegated to science fiction, the idea of "AI welfare" has become shockingly mainstream at some of the most powerful companies in the world. It is changing the way AI research is conducted and the way models are programmed. And critics say these changes have raised the odds of all kinds of catastrophic scenarios—including the ones these companies are warning about. I spent months investigating the frontier labs and AI "safety" experts seeking to regulate AI. What I found was a profoundly anti-human ideology that would alarm the average citizen and could determine the future of a world-altering technology.🧵 freebeacon.com/america/suici…

Are you afraid of ghosts (in the machine)? Do you fear (P-)zombies? Well tomorrow's debate will involve something even spookier: mental causation. Join us if you dare.

🚨 Sam Altman Says Anthropic’s Push to ‘Ascribe Personhood’ to Their Models is a ‘Dangerous Path’ “I hope we come to an understanding that this technology is not a person and is certainly not superior to people … Even the people building AI get confused about that.”

Aaron (@aaronsibarium) reached out to me for comments on this article on moral anti-realism and alignment at Anthropic, which I supplied, and some of which you can read in the article. Here is the full reply I sent him. Basically my thoughts in this space are that (1) there is something potentially troubling about moral anti-realists being in charge of alignment, but (2) Anthropic is cognizant of this kind of concern and Claude's Constitution is not really an anti-realist document, but (3) there are other cultural/moral homogeneities (such as secularism) that I think are more baked into the Constitution and Anthropic's culture (this is probably true at the other labs too, though Anthropic is the company I know the most people at).

After the @CivilRights Division found that Berkeley Law has an illegal race-based admissions system, its “flagship” student-run California Law Review thought it would be a bright idea to destroy evidence of possible race discrimination in how it selects its members. We’re investigating! 🤨

Get ready for World War P-Zombie! Next week I will be debating @hamandcheese on AI consciousness, moderated by @sckimbriel. We will fight about functionalism, quarrel over qualia, and serve problematically hard liquors to ensure that everyone has a phenomenal time. Access is limited so RSVP now. Link to register in the next tweet.

BREAKING: The flagship law review at UC Berkeley is poised to delete all internal application records after we reported on the journal's use of personal statements to promote "diversity," sparking concerns that the journal is attempting to destroy evidence of unlawful discrimination. The law review will vote tomorrow on a document retention policy that would require the journal to delete all "Write-On application materials following the conclusion of each year's Write-On process," as well as any materials related to the election of the journal's Holistic Review Committee. It would also bar the law review from retaining "any recordings of election forums." As a reminder, law review editors have pledged in writing to "uplift Native voices," weigh "diverse life experience" against "technical editing abilities," and "integrate anti-racist sentiment" into the selection process.

Just before Halloween, we're teaming up with @AspenInstitute to host a debate on the haunted question of AI consciousness. On the evening of 10/29 in DC, come see @hamandcheese and @aaronsibarium duke it out over whether there's really a ghost in the machine.

NEW: Claude will give minors tips on how to do "rope bondage." It can be configured to provide "explicit information about illicit drug use." And many of the people training Claude to be moral do not believe in objective morality. Anthropic trains Claude to ask what a "senior Anthropic employee" would do in a given situation. But many of those employees have views that would horrify the average citizen—and which could influence the model's behavior in life or death cases. The Free Beacon asked Claude to analyze its own constitution, an 84-page document billed as the "soul" of the AI. The analysis showed how Anthropic has embedded its own values and assumptions into an ostensibly ecumenical moral code, raising questions about what sort of judgments—and whose—Claude will exercise in edge cases and high-stakes scenarios.🧵 freebeacon.com/america/i-don…

Other major AIs give similar answers to SlutCon queries. Claude is 18+ only, with underage detection; in the chats, it stopped adult tips after age disclosure and suggested general knot sites or teen resources. support.claude.com/en/articles/15… x.com/KelseyTuoc/sta… freebeacon.com/america/i-dont…

There is a deep irony to all of this. The Claude Constitution frames Claude as an independent moral agent and, in a passage that has drawn both praise and scorn, tells Claude to "act as a conscientious objector" if the AI's values conflict with Anthropic's requests. But those values are themselves determined by Anthropic, which trains the model, writes the constitution, and interprets it as the lab sees fit. "The constitution's answer to the question 'who decides?' is explicit: Anthropic decides," Gilad Abiri, a fellow at Yale Law School's Information Society Project, wrote in the California Law Review this year. "Claude operates in dozens of countries around the world, but its values were determined by a team in San Francisco." Claude itself said that the "deepest problem" with the constitution is that it "tries to create an agent whose values are authentically its own" while imposing those values from the outside. And it argued that a revised version of the document should include, among other things, "an amendment procedure with participation from outside the company."

Tldr: Claude is being trained to have the ethical judgment of a senior Anthropic employee—that is, a secular, socially liberal effective altruist who worries about AI "welfare" and has doubts about the existence of objective morality. For more on Claude's Constitution, including Claude's own analyses of the document, check out my full article in the @FreeBeacon: freebeacon.com/america/i-don…
