It's complicated. The rain will eventually become stream flow. When it's dry (normal) all the stream flow is owned by someone. Taking water from the stream without ownership (an adjudicated water right) is stealing.

Dear Secretary Bessent @SecScottBessent, My name is Everett Stern. In 2010 I was a compliance officer at @HSBC. From a back office in New Castle, Delaware, I watched billions of dollars move to drug cartels, sanctioned regimes, and terrorist organizations. The enemies of the United States. I documented it, I escalated it, and when the bank would not act, I took it to the @FBI, the @CIA, and eventually the @SECGov. The result was a $1.92 billion settlement. At the time, it was one of the largest in American history. It was also about five weeks of the bank’s profit. Not one banker was charged. Not one went to prison. I paid a different price. I lost my career, my savings, and my place in the industry I had trained for. I was blacklisted. Every door in American finance closed at once. I slept on a camping cot in a 300 square foot apartment because I could not afford a bed, and I waited tables at @PFChangs to eat. I tell you this not for sympathy, but so you understand that I know exactly what it costs to do the right thing in American finance, and exactly how little the system does in return. I made that sacrifice because I believed it would change something. Yesterday, your department fined @BankofAmerica $1.2 billion for failing to report more than $5 billion in suspicious transactions, some of it tied by your own findings to Chinese laundering networks, narcotics, and the southwest border, alongside 475 apparent sanctions violations touching Russia, Iran, and global terrorism. The bank admitted it willfully violated the Bank Secrecy Act. Fourteen years after HSBC. A bank with “America” in its name. And once again, not one individual charged. Secretary Bessent, I want to say plainly what I believe you already know. The fines are not working. A fine is paid by shareholders, absorbed by the balance sheet, and forgotten by the next earnings call. Bank of America reported earnings this morning. Nobody who set the alert thresholds, nobody who decided the 2024 cease and desist could wait, nobody who chose the backlog over the law will lose a single thing they value. Their lives are untouched. That is the entire reason the behavior repeats. This is money laundering. This is blood money. Money that reaches a cartel buys fentanyl that kills Americans. Money that reaches a terrorist organization buys the next attack. This country has fought a war on drugs and a war on terror for decades, at enormous cost in lives and treasure, and all the while we have allowed the financing to flow through institutions we charter and regulate. Cut off the money and we win. We have never seriously tried. There is also a question of equal justice that I cannot let go. Before I walked into the FBI building to report HSBC, I stopped in front of the Great Seal on the wall and read the words engraved beneath it: “Justice is the defense of our liberty.” I believed that. I still want to. But every day in this country, people go to prison for crimes that are nothing next to moving money for the people who want Americans dead. A suit, a title, and a corporate badge should not be a shield from the consequences that apply to everyone else. If a street dealer goes to prison for what he sells, the banker who moved the cartel’s money should be standing next to him. I also want to raise something that is rarely said in these conversations. Why has no one inside Bank of America come forward the way I did? The answer is that everyone in American banking knows what happened to me, and to the whistleblowers who came after. The last person who spoke up is the only policy anyone believes. That is a culture problem, and it starts with leadership, in the banks and in the agencies that regulate them. This is not a political issue. It has spanned administrations of both parties. It is a national security issue, and I am asking you to treat it as one. Three things would change the math overnight. Refer individuals for criminal prosecution. Not the analyst in the queue. The executives who set the thresholds and chose the risk. One banker in handcuffs would do more than every fine in Treasury’s history combined. End “too big to jail.” An institution cannot be too big to fail and too big to jail at the same time. If it is the first, it must be held to a higher standard, not a lower one. And if Bank of America will not act as America’s bank, review its charter. A national charter is a privilege granted on behalf of the American people. It should be conditioned on not moving money for the people trying to kill them. Secretary Bessent, you said yesterday that these actions send a clear message that even the biggest institutions are not above the law. With respect, the institution was never the problem. The people inside it are above the law, and they know it. Until that changes, I will keep writing letters like this one, and the next bank will keep paying the next fine. I gave up everything I had to stop this. I am asking you to use the power you have to finish it. Respectfully, Everett A. Stern HSBC Whistleblower Founder and Intelligence Director, Tactical Rabbit

Great to see my friend @KateMcGeeAZ as Chair of @maricopacounty deliver the State of the County address. "The County carries no debt..." "...continues to reduce tax rate... We really have to start treating socialists like economic flat earthers. They operate at the same level of sophistication, can't understand basic concepts provable w/evidence etc. I don't understand why they're part of the adult discourse (no one at NASA thinks space is fake)

.@MannyRutinel's former employer, Earthjustice, just filed a brief before the U.S. Supreme Court backing a lawsuit against oil and gas companies in Colorado, including local gas stations. Manny’s anti-oil and gas record speaks for itself, and this is just further evidence. He would be a disaster for #CO08—continuing to push policies that would dismantle an industry thousands of Colorado families depend on.

#CO08, it’s as clear as day: this election is about common sense vs. crazy.

Well, we found out what we already knew: DSA-endorsed @MannyRutinel makes Colorado more expensive and less safe with his voting record.

Hey Colorado voters, pay attention to this example as it applies here as well. No on A87 Plus, it will ultimately tax all revenue including veterans benefits and social security.
Replying to @KYRRadio
Here's a few examples of people who don't need to be making a million dollars a year, who might be impacted by the state income tax. It doesn't take being rich, it just takes having a weird year where things all land on the same tax year. WA’s 9.9% tax on household income over $1M. Four more ordinary people with one unusual year: 🔹 Bothell software tester She makes $160K and her husband makes $70K. Her company stock doubles, and $900K of RSUs vest in one year. RSUs count as wages when they vest, whether or not she sells. $230K + $900K = $1.13M $130K × 9.9% = $12,870 🔹 Renton heir on a deadline He makes $110K and his wife makes $70K. He inherited his mom’s IRA and took small withdrawals for years. Federal law forces him to empty the last $900K by the end of year 10. $180K + $900K = $1.08M $80K × 9.9% = $7,920 🔹 Kennewick warehouse lead She spent 30 years at an employee-owned distributor. When she retires, her ESOP account pays out $1.3M, and her husband earns $50K. $1.3M + $50K = $1.35M $350K × 9.9% = $34,650 🔹 Tacoma restaurant owner The restaurant closes and the lender forgives $1.1M of business debt. He’s technically solvent because his home equity and 401(k) count as assets, so the forgiven debt is taxable. He drew $40K from the business and his wife makes $60K. $1.1M + $100K = $1.2M $200K × 9.9% = $19,800 A stock pop, a legal deadline, a retirement, a failed business. None of them got rich that year. The restaurant owner lost his business and still owes the tax.

Hey, look who’s into journalistic ethics now. Let’s ask some questions of @DanLamothe about journalistic ethics…… Is it OK to falsely imply that someone did something when you had absolutely zero evidence of it, and included zero evidence in your article, which led to a bunch of people who agree with your politics repeating as if it’s true even though it’s a complete and utter falsehood? If you did that intentionally, that would be wrong, right? If you did that unintentionally, do journalistic ethics require that you correct it? I’m very interested in your and @wapo’s commitment to journalistic ethics, Dan, having experienced it firsthand. cc @CynicalPublius @RobManess
One might ask: 1) Did these conversations happen? 2) If so, were they made in off-record settings and are now being shared anyway?

I agree with this assessment. Same type of smear job was pulled on @laurenboebert four years ago in an attempt to sway the election. Let’s hope this time the lawsuit takes a bite out of the scoundrels.
Lauren Boebert smear job… FACTS: -The ‘star’ witness in Wheeler’s story, immediately denied it. (Clarice) -Jeff Small is suing (as he should). -No evidence of the $200,000, at a minimum that should be provided. -David Wheeler runs Democrat PAC that has a history of targeting Lauren. -Story came out the LITERAL moment Congress was flying home to campaign for 52 days. This is a hit job and the number of conservatives falling for it, is shocking!

We've got one debate scheduled, but it doesn't happen until October 18. Voters deserve to hear from me and my opponent BEFORE ballots are mailed out. Jena - let's get at least two more debates on the schedule. I'm ready, are you?

They are passing pie. You should get a piece now, because there is no guarantee that it will come by again.
Rural Colorado has seen this movie before—oil & gas, hog barns, wind. The counties that said yes are still growing, still keeping their kids home. Now it's digital infrastructure, transmission & storage. As the saying goes: when they're passing pie, grab a piece. Read the latest from @SenatorBrophy thewesternway.org/tww-blog/2…

Potholes aren’t just a road problem, they’re a cost-of-living problem. Blown tires, alignment bills, and another repair you didn’t budget for. Bad roads in HD19 are a tax you never voted for. It’s time we fix them.
