Thanks for having me back on @MacroVoices, @ErikSTownsend - I enjoyed our conversation as always!
MacroVoices @ErikSTownsend & @PatrickCeresna welcome Luke Gromen @LukeGromen. They discuss why the economic fallout from the prolonged Strait of Hormuz disruption has been slower than expected, with China’s reduced oil demand and coordinated strategic reserve releases helping cushion the supply shock, and why the bigger credit risk from AI may sit with the consumer. bit.ly/4sufi1M
“Democrats are outnumbering Republicans almost 2-to-1 in early voting [early voting which is over 3 weeks old already & ends Sunday]”
-Text I received this afternoon from my local GOP office (Cleveland, Ohio)
Don't miss the forest for the trees:
.@SecScottBessent: “At the G20 in Asheville, North Carolina, in August, we pushed all the G20 members toward growth. We said that the biggest risk to financial stability is a lack of growth.”

The Copper Squeeze is here
Copper is "sold out everywhere."
China's Yangshan premium just hit a record $200+/ton. Buyers are scrambling for metal with LME prices near all-time highs.
Inventories thin. Smelters cutting output. Demand not budging.

Midwest employment falling y/y, yet Cleveland Fed President Hammack voted for tightening?
🤔(Esp. since employment is a lagging indicator.)
Via @Econimica (below)
I suspect he didn’t answer because he couldn’t tell the truth, which would’ve sounded something like this:
“Because when I raised rates 25 bps last month, LT UST yields took off like a scalded cat and that surprised me and freaked me out, so now I don’t know quite what to do.”
Operation Outcast in Iran?
“Outcast” as in “We going to be there forever. Forever? Forever ever? For-EVER ever?”
China in the WTO was "AI productivity miracle 1.0."
Chart below shows US "Not in Labor Force" as a % of Total US Population, 1975-today.
Black line = China in the WTO. "NILF" up 600 bps as a % of population since then. Today, that's ~20m people.
Bullish for gold, BTC, UBI, Federal debt levels, stocks, & western political instability.

It is noteworthy that Dimon found it necessary to even publicly make this point.
In 1995, when I started in finance...or 2000...or 2005... or 2010...or even 2015, Dimon would have never had to say this because it would've been as redundant as saying "the sun rises in the east."
Jamie Dimon to a country that pulled its gold out of New York: you have three armies within 400 miles, while gold in America is protected by two oceans and the US military
“If we have the strongest military in the world and the strongest economy in the world, we will be the preeminent reserve currency. It is those two things.”
“I was in a country somewhere in the Middle East, and also in Europe, and the people said, we took our gold out of the vaults in New York City and moved it to our country. You know what I said to him? I said, you have three armies within 400 miles who can come take your gold.”
“That’s the real world. You’re not thinking clearly about safety. That gold is protected by the Atlantic, the Pacific, the United States military, the rule of law.”
“But if we are not the preeminent military and economy, you will see our reserve status come down.”
Only if we give displaced workers cheap subprime loans to buy stuff like we did '02-'08
& only if they don't default on those subprime loans like they did then
& only if the Fed bails out the banks w/printed money once they start defaulting on subprime loans like they did then
Replying to @LukeGromen
But corporate profits and margins skyrocket as a result and wealth effect keeps things going vertical? K shape worsens but wealthy drive the economy already? No?

In AI jobs shock 1.0 (China into the WTO), US manufacturing employment fell 30% & basically never came back👇
Markets are still sure AI 2.0 won't do this to white collar
Almost every price on our screens is wrong if AI 2.0 is only 1/5 as disruptive to white collar as AI 1.0 was

⚠️ RESEARCH: Fusion reactors are going to crash the price of gold.
That’s the headline. Here are the numbers:
Marathon Fusion’s idea is real physics. Fire fusion neutrons at mercury and some of it turns into gold. Published, peer reviewed, nobody disputes it.
Then the math shows up...
A one gigawatt plant, on the optimistic models, makes 2 to 5 tonnes of gold a year. Global mines pull out 3,500 to 4,000 tonnes. One plant moves annual supply by about a tenth of a percent.
The feedstock is enriched mercury. About $15,000 per milligram. Gold trades near $135 per gram. You are loading the reactor with something 100,000x more expensive than what comes out of it.
And what comes out is radioactive. The bars sit in storage for 14 to 18 years before anyone can legally sell them. A plant switched on today delivers its first sellable ounce in the 2040s.

"Chinese buy lots of gold b/c their stock market has gone nowhere since 2007 & their property bubble burst." -US consensus

QatarEnergy signing long term contracts to purchase U.S. LNG may be what “Gulf states fend for themselves” looks like in practice.
If the U.S. is going from guaranteeing energy security to selling it, then Qatar paying for U.S. goodwill with LNG deals now instead of hosting U.S. bases makes sense.
The Qataris have traditionally been clear eyed about their situation and made decent deals. From before the British in Ottoman times to 1915 when the British expressly forbid Ibn Saud from attacking Qatar, Kuwait, and the Sheikdoms that would become the UAE.
When Qatar became a separate country in 1971, Sheik Al Thani became Emir Al Thani and two days later the U.S. recognized the new nation.
In the 1990s, Qatar discovered offshore natural gas deposits and transitioned from a poor peninsula of pearl divers to having the highest wealth per capita in the world in one generation and hosting F1 races.
Similar to the House of Saud gaining U.S. support by recycling oil profits into U.S. treasuries, and Bahrain through hosting U.S. naval forces after taking over when the British withdrew east of Suez, Qatar built the largest air base in the Middle East, Al Udeid following the first Gulf War at over $1 billion and invited the U.S.
Qatar security became synonymous with U.S. national security interest. Now the Qataris are shifting strategies by buying U.S. LNG after Ras Laffan took missile hits.
The contract to buy U.S. LNG is for about 5% of Qatar capacity, and they already own 70% of Golden Pass LNG in Texas, so they are diversifying their long term supply outside chokepoints.
Would Qatar bother if they thought the world was going back to the way things were?
They are buying long term LNG contracts that don't start until the next U.S. administration and run through 2054.
Is Qatar being clear eyed about a shift in U.S. policy and aligning themselves with the U.S.'s new policy of selling energy instead of guaranteeing security?
