Very happy to share some great news from @MobilenetUMA! Our paper “Video Streaming and Cloud Gaming Services Over 4G and 5G: A Complete Network and Service Metrics Dataset” published in @IEEEorg / @IEEEComSoc, has received the “Kazuyo Sejima” Research Award in Engineering and Architecture, within the XIV Research Awards of @InfoUMA and @FGUMA, recognising the best research works published across different areas of knowledge. Link: ieeexplore.ieee.org/document…
The work addresses a key challenge in mobile networks: understanding how network conditions translate into the actual end-to-end experience perceived by users.
For this purpose, we released a comprehensive real-world #dataset combining network- and service-level metrics for video streaming and cloud gaming over #4G and #5G, enabling its reuse for research on QoE, network optimisation and data-driven mobile networks.
📊 Dataset: lnkd.in/epaTeN8S
The paper was submitted for the award by our former colleague and PhD graduate Carlos Baena González, currently at #VOIS and still collaborating with us through joint projects.
This is particularly special for us: another recognition of the research carried out at Mobilenet / @TELMA_UMA and of Carlos’s research trajectory, following his Extraordinary Doctorate Award.
Congratulations to all co-authors: Carlos Baena González, Sebastián Peñaherrera Pulla, Lourdes Camacho Mérida, Raquel Barco

Happy to share our recent paper in collaboration with @DLR_en: AI-Driven Optimization of Virtual Network Function Allocation in 6G Non-Terrestrial Networks
Published in @IEEEorg Transactions on Network and Service Management (@IEEEComSoc).
The work addresses one of the key orchestration challenges emerging with #6G Non-Terrestrial Networks (#NTN): how to dynamically allocate Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) across satellite and terrestrial domains under constrained onboard resources and changing network conditions.
To tackle this, we propose an AI-driven framework based on a distributed O-RAN architecture orchestrated with Kubernetes. Using measurements from an experimental 6G-NTN platform, machine learning models learn the relationship between resource allocation and end-to-end network performance, while a gradient-free optimizer searches for the best feasible VNF configuration.
In the performed tests and compared with conventional VNF-placement heuristics, the proposed approach reduces service RTT by up to 39% and achieves up to 3× higher YouTube download throughput.
Congrats to all co-authors: @PacoMuro_ , Eduardo Baena, Tomaso de Cola and Raquel Barco.

🤖 Made with AI
This week I had the pleasure of taking part in the ERASMUS BIP “The AI Revolution in Architecture and Urban Planning” at Higher Technical School of Architecture (eAM') of @InfoUMA, exploring how #AI, connectivity and distributed intelligence are reshaping the built environment.
I contributed with the seminar “Connected Intelligence for the Built Environment”, discussing how these technologies can change the way we understand, design and operate buildings and urban environments.
One of the best parts was the lively discussion with the participants afterwards about AI, its current capabilities, limitations and implications.
I particularly enjoyed the interdisciplinary nature of the session: architecture, telecommunications and AI have many points of contact, and bringing those different perspectives together can lead to very useful ideas.
Many thanks to Carlos Rosa Jiménez and Nuria Nebot for the invitation and organisation, and to all the participants for their questions, perspectives and contributions to the discussion.

I find it funny that the official explanation as to why the T pillars of Gobekli Tepe, the Moai of Easter Island, the tiki statues of Hiva, and this statue if tlaloc from acapulco all have their arms and hands in the same posture is... that it means absolutely nothing and the ancient sculptors did this for no reason at all. for those unfamiliar with my work I've traveled to over 50 countries documenting this phenomenon in ancient cultures around the world, link to my book in my bio

Even Amazon cannot get a new submarine cable for its AI data centers before 2028. SubCom alone holds $4.7 billion in unfilled orders. That's the longest backlog in the industry's history. Every AI model trains on data stored across oceans, data that crosses the seafloor on a fiber optic cable. One component has to work without maintenance for 25 years on the ocean floor: The repeater. It amplifies light using erbium-doped fiber pumped by lasers rated for 200,000 hours of continuous operation. Repeaters sit at depths of 8,000 meters under 800 atmospheres of pressure, spaced every 70 km along cables stretching 15,000 km. A single transpacific cable contains up to 200 repeaters. Once deployed, they can't be serviced. Only 4 companies on Earth can build a complete submarine cable system.
