The CW is foreign policy doesn't matter in elections. Well, it sure as hell matters in this one. And the next one too.
One of the things the data analysts on our side obsessed over was "composition"—whether the electorate looked close enough to 2024 for Republicans to win. And despite polls that showed a Democrat blowout, the data kept on telling us the same story: in some states turnout was merely OK, in other states it was downright amazing, and in no state was it catastrophic. There was a genuine sense of optimism on our team: our people were showing up. So, I asked the smartest data guy I know, does that mean we're going to shock the world? "No," he told me. "We might do better than the polls suggest. But the data is telling us that a lot of Trump/Vance 2024 voters are pissed and planning to vote for the other guys. Our voters are turning out, but they may not vote for us." Well, that looks prophetic now. Our voters did show up. In Florida, for example, the electorate was 9 points more Republican than Democrat, just a couple points worse than 2024. Undoubtedly there were places we could have done better on turnout. But the main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026. There will be a lot of infighting and arguing over what happened and why that is. One of the pollsters I really respect told me that our economic messaging wasn’t sharp enough down the stretch. I’m sure that’s true. But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone. Another pollster—one of the smartest people I know in politics, told me yesterday we’d lose the generic ballot by 13 points. I felt negative going into Tuesday, but even I was shocked by this. In his polling, he saw that a lot of Trump 2024 voters were angry and planning to vote for Democrats. He asked those voters who had abandoned us what would cause them to come back on our team. The top four answers, accounting for nearly all of the responses were: 1) End the war 2) Focus on cost of living/inflation 3) Put America First 4) Change our relationship to Israel Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats. This is according to a pollster who nailed the results. While many spent Monday attacking Rachel Campos Duffy for calling for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, it turns out her political advice was sound. (She’s also a great person.) In the next few months, there's going to be a lot of gaslighting. Expect to hear any number of establishment politicians say the solution to our woes is amnesty. I'm open to the idea that we should change enforcement—by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labor, for instance. But anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you. The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night. If you'd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that's at least honest. But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there. I remain hopeful about our country. To the people who are pissed off and want to say, “I told you so”: you’re right, you did tell us so. Take that energy into electing Republicans who share your worldview. To the people who are just pissed at the results, you should be. Let’s take that anger and get back to the work of saving our country.

Senator Tillis (R-NC) warns Secretary Hegseth that he's coming for him in the lame duck. TILLIS on CBS: "....But Pete Hegseth has a reckoning. Uh, he, he is one of the reasons why we don't have the funding or guarantee for defense that we need. I think after the election, we need to determine whether or not he's the best person to bring those needs to congress. If he wants something done before the end of this congress, which is only 60 days away."

I've spoken with several private investors and executives who jumped into the defense innovation boom -- and tech leaders building the future -- and they're all paying close attention. Not just pending investigations into Hegseth, but the Trump family and all recent DOD business.
If their party flips the chamber, Democrats on the House and Senate Armed Services Committees are planning wide-reaching investigations into the US war with Iran and lawmakers are coalescing around Hegseth as their top target. “He is the lowest hanging fruit because of the animosity that seems to be both from Republican and Democratic senators and staff,” a Democratic aide told CNN. “He is going to be investigated." w/ @AnnieGrayerCNN cnn.com/2026/10/30/politics/…

A massacre in the Dnipro passenger railway station today. A guided Russian drone targeted a crowded platform, killing at least 13 people and injuring many others, as per city officials. But diesel. But Russia wants peace. But don’t you dare hit their refineries.

This also could have been a segment on The Electric Company. Things like this were the visual landscape of my early childhood.
I like to imagine the 1975 Oval Office meeting when Gerald Ford, pipe clenched between his teeth, WH Chief of Staff Don Rumsfeld and his deputy Dick Cheney greenlit this ad. Cheney: “It’s the bicentennial next year. We need to get the hippies on board.” Ford: “Darn right. The bums in Haight-Ashbury are American too.” Rumsfeld: “We have just the thing, Mr. President.”

To those who seek to create positive change in Cuba - now is the time. The disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few; seize this opportunity to create the change you desire through a discrete partnership with the CIA.

I got one of these that was so exhaustively detailed about my first book that it was borderline stalker.
If you’ve written a book in the last decade, you’re getting these AI generated emails promising movie deals, republication rights, and more. They are always fake.

A senior Ukrainian commander told me he lost more than $1 million in drones the first night StarShield went out. The next 3 days, speeds remained so unstable they canceled almost all ops striking RU logistics to protect Ukrainian infantry in the kill zone nytimes.com/2026/10/21/world…

Ratcliffe has made good on his promise to focus the agency on clandestine ops. Several people remarked, if you're working in the Special Activities Center, you're very happy these days! Ratcliffe has publicly lauded CIA's role in the Venezuela raid, Iran, and the rescue of a downed pilot.

But some of these covert missions have stirred anxiety inside the CIA. Recently retired officers told me that some of their colleagues have avoided taking jobs in the Americas and Counternarcotics Mission Center, because they want no part of the agency's reported role in potentially illegal boat strikes or other counternarcotics missions in the region. “There are people at the operational level who, when the Democrats take over the House, will be left holding the bag,” one former officer told me. “The agency is over its skis right now.”

But on the flip side, people told me, things could have been much worse. Some of those 60 probationary employees were already on performance-improvement plans, meaning they weren't working up to standards. And unlike Patel or Hegseth, Ratcliffe doesn't routinely vilify his own workforce or stoke culture wars in the ranks.
