Are we about the get the weakest short-term letting regulations in Europe? It certainly looks that way. After 10 years of foot dragging Govt looks set to make a mess of short-term letting regs. irishexaminer.com/opinion/co…

There is rightly still huge concern at the new measures that Shabana Mahmood has introduced but UNISON deserve a lot of credit for this u-turn. What I think it shows is that campaigning can work. UNISON also deserve credit for the way in which their campaign involved migrant workers. We can shift the balance of forces within this government but to do so we must campaign hard.
BREAKING NEWS 🚨 Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood MP has announced a government u-turn on Indefinite Leave to Remain because of UNISON’s campaign. The promise of 5 years will be kept for many care workers, but some will not meet the new requirements through no fault of their own.

With DUP losing its sole female — and most popular — MP, three quarters of its MPs are now men in their 70s. Losing Carla Lockhart is a far graver blow to the DUP than it might seem. Gavin Robinson is presiding over decline, and running out of time. belfasttelegraph.co.uk/comme…

TODAY WE REMEMBER WARRANT OFFICER CLASS 2 ALBERT DAVID COOPER 🥀🇬🇧 Today marks 36 years since the murder of Warrant Officer Class 2 Albert David Cooper, aged 42, of the 8th (County Tyrone) Battalion, Ulster Defence Regiment (UDR). Albert was a part-time soldier and Sergeant Major who also worked at a garage in Union Street, Cookstown, County Tyrone. On 2nd November 1990, a young woman brought a Vauxhall Astra to the garage, presenting herself as an ordinary customer. Unbeknownst to Albert, the vehicle had been fitted with an IRA booby-trap bomb. When Albert entered the vehicle and engaged the gears, the device detonated, killing him. He was just 42 years old. Albert had served with the Ulster Defence Regiment since its formation in 1970 and had already survived an attempt on his life in 1988. He was off duty, carrying out his ordinary civilian work when he was murdered. The woman who delivered the vehicle, Geraldine Ferrity, was subsequently convicted of his murder in 1993. At her trial, the judge described how she had handed Albert "the keys to oblivion". Ferrity was released in December 1998 under the prisoner-release arrangements associated with the Belfast Agreement, having served approximately eight years in custody... But for Albert's family, there could be no such release from their loss. He was a husband, a soldier, a colleague and a man whose life was taken while simply going about his working day. Albert was the 190th serving member of the Ulster Defence Regiment to be killed during the Troubles. Today, 36 years later, we remember his life, his service and the family and friends who were left behind. Our thoughts are with all those who knew and loved him, and with the families of every serviceman and woman whose lives were taken during the Troubles. Rest in peace, Warrant Officer Class 2 Albert David Cooper. We Will Remember Them. 🥀 "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." I caught up with this series this weekend. The murder of Robert McCartney by IRA men was appalling, but made worse by the systematic, cynical and ongoing denial of justice for Robert by people who loudly and rightly call for justice elsewhere. Solidarity with his brave sisters.
Murder in Belfast: Sisters Seeking Justice is the story of the killing of Robert McCartney. Coming up at 9.00pm on BBC Two.

Ciara was one in a million. I got to spend a day with her a while back. I’d been trying to interview her for about 10 years she said ‘I hope today makes up for that’ & my word it did. A hero of mine & she was brilliant, funny, passionate, proud & joy to be around. Be more Ciara.

Members of the Ulster Defence Association (UDA), a loyalist paramilitary group, opened fire on civilians in a crowded pub during a Halloween party, killing eight and wounding nineteen. The pub was targeted because it was frequented by Catholics… And they’re still agitating against peace.
Thinking of all those who still suffer because of the evil Greysteel massacre, 33 years ago today. We remember the victims and all whose lives were changed forever.
