Superb work by Dr. Meeks!
Why does #immunotherapy work for some patients with #BladderCancer but not others?
On the latest #BreakthroughsPodcast, @JoshMeeks, MD, PhD, discusses his research uncovering how immune cells influence treatment response.

Deeply honored to be elected to the National Academy of Medicine and grateful for all of the kind notes I have been getting from colleagues! news.feinberg.northwestern.e… This recognition belongs to the extraordinary people who made this journey possible—my laboratory members, past and present, my colleagues at Northwestern, National Cancer Institute for funding my work for the past thirty-plus years, the visionary philanthropists who believed in our science, and my wife and our four children, whose love, patience, and unwavering support have made everything possible. Science is a team endeavor, and I feel enormously fortunate and grateful. I truly am one of the luckiest people alive. @NU_BMG_SQE @NUFeinbergMed @NorthwesternMed @theNASciences @theNAMedicine @NIH @theNCI
Happy to share an exciting paper pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.26… by Dr. Bercin Cenik @bkcenik from our lab in collaboration with Vijay Ramani's lab @GladstoneInst @UCSFMedicine revealing how SETDB1 selectively silences specific retrotransposons, particularly ERVK and ERV1, while LINE/L1 elements follow a different regulatory molecular logic. Bercin used long-read RNA-seq and a telomere-to-telomere genomic information to uncover TE regulation at single-locus resolution, revealing that even elements within the same family can behave differently. The big takeaway for me is that Genome defense is not one-size-fits-all. Distinct transposable elements rely on different layers of epigenetic mechanisms to regulate repression. @NU_BMG_SQE @NUFeinbergMed @PNASNews @theNASciences @theNAMedicine #epigenetics #retrotransposons

Superb talk by Dr. Zibo Zhao at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Epigenetics meeting. She presented how mutations in COMPASS family of histone methyltransferase can be used in clinic for promising therapeutic of cancer. Space, the final frontier! 🚀 Check out this amazing feat of discovery from my colleague @yuefeng_1 and team. They report the first “Spatial-ATAC-Hi-C”, a method that maps 3D genome organization and chromatin accessibility together while preserving the spatial context of tissues. They have applied this method to brain and tumor samples and revealed cell-specific transcriptional regulation, oncogenic alterations, and clonal heterogeneity within their native tissue microenvironment. A fascinating new window into the spatial organization of the genome! Replying to @NorthwesternMed
@NorthwesternMed scientists have, for the first time, described the underlying mechanisms that regulate how cells rapidly change #GeneExpression in response to #hypoxia, a key feature of many #TreatmentResistantTumors, according to a recent study published in @ScienceAdvances.
Ali Shilatifard, PhD (@ShilatifardLab), was senior author of the study.
We’ve been trying to crack locus-specific control of transcriptional regulation and the role of Pol II pause/release and transcriptional elongation control for years. Now, a new postdoctoral fellow in the lab, David Lowe, may have identified an exciting path forward. His analysis offers a provocative new way to think about how the extraordinary complexity and plasticity of human transcription can be regulated at specific genes and loci. Take a look at his work, and keep an eye out for his next few papers. I think they may change how we think about gene- and locus-specific transcriptional regulation @NU_BMG_SQE @MolecularCell @CellPressNews @ScienceMagazine @Nature @NatureGenet @theNASciences @NUFeinbergMed cell.com/action/showPdf?pii=…
