Letter from NDP Avi Lewis to Prime Minister Carney outlining three NDP priorities for Budget 2026: 1. A down payment on a network of public grocery stores from coast to coast. $350 million for initial infrastructure, $290 million ongoing to build 50 stores. 2. Triple the federal government's investment in community housing over 10 years to $18 billion, to build a million new non-market homes. 3. A nation-building investment in health care, guaranteeing an increase of at least 6% per year to the Canada Health Transfer, costing $12 billion over 5 years. Additionally, conclude and fund pharmacare deals with the remaining provinces and territories. To fund these investments, we are calling for a wealth tax starting at 1% on fortunes exceeding $10 million and escalating to 3% on the largest fortunes, which could generate up to $40 billion a year, and $500 billion over ten years.

Also important to note if you are a young person who wants to buy a house a crash ISNT good for you. There's a difference between cost and affordability, and a actual crash would probably render housing more unaffordable for another decade at least.

A crash would spike unemployment, spike the cost of credit and in a roundabout way may even spike rent. The strategy the government is taking maximizes the benefit to the public and minimizes the risk. There is obviously a plan here and you should trust it.

Canada’s housing crash is now approaching America’s 2008 bust, per BMO. Canadian home prices have fallen 20.5% nationally from their early-2022 peak, close to the 26% decline the US saw during the 2008 housing crash.
