Yew!
Over the weekend, @CAgovernor signed SB 1053, officially banning plastic grocery bags for good! Many thanks to @SenBlakespear, @BauerKahan, @CALPIRG, @Surfrider, @Oceana, @AzulDotOrg, @cawrecycles, and so many others who helped eliminate this senseless source of plastic waste.
Victory! Big thanks to everyone who supported this statewide campaign here in SD County - chapter activists lobbied extensively at #CaliforniaOceanDay, with our local state reps, and held a public rally w/ @CALPIRG at Moonlight Beach featuring SB1053 author @SenBlakespear.
Over 200 of you rallied at the final hour to email the Governor via our #ActionAlert. Thank you all for your efforts large & small!
The patchwork quilt of state & local plastic laws is confusing, no doubt. We’ve created a new resource to guide you through what plastic laws apply where you live, including who to contact if those laws are being ignored. Includes state plastic laws!

Highly recommend this blog post for anyone who cares about the preservation of our beaches. A bad decision in this case would essentially nullify protections against coastal armoring (i.e. seawalls) in the California Coastal Act.
California’s beaches are under threat, between climate change, coastal development, and now, coastal armoring like seawalls, which may protect private property, but at the expense of sandy beaches. Seawalls exacerbate erosion, cause beach loss, and over time may completely eliminate beaches. A significant lawsuit is now on appeal, with implications for the ability of regulators to protect California’s coast from armoring. This week, the Surfrider Foundation filed a brief supporting the California Coastal Commission's authority to prevent coastal armoring and protect our beaches. Learn more: hubs.la/Q02PMcHq0

IB is bracing for the 🌀 & for the 🌊 of toxic pollution the TJ River will bring . As discussions move fwd 4 emergency $ to address coastal erosion in affluent communities up north, we continue to wait for a state of emergency. True that. We gotta link up with some state legislators to patch a few holes in the state bag ban. Upgrade the definition of “reusable” to get rid of these so-called reusable plastic bags, raise the pass-thru fee from $.10 to at least $.25, or both. That would be an improvement.

🚆 On #TransNetTuesday, we're highlighting the vital #LOSSAN corridor. 🌊 Safeguarding our coastline is a top priority for #SANDAG. Landslides & erosion have posed rail safety challenges. 💪 Thanks to leaders like @SenToniAtkins & @RepMikeLevin, we're securing the tracks. 🚄🌟
Thank you @sdut for cutting through the complacency on our region's priority clean water crisis.

If the ones that hit SD this year were "moderate," imagine the sinkholes and bluff erosion that strong & extreme events would cause... – at Oceanside, CA
We have #AtmosphericRivers to thank for all this recent rain! 🌧️ The team from @CW3E_Scripps says we are at 31 atmospheric river events so far this water year (11 weak, 13 moderate, 6 strong, 1 extreme). Here is the map of where and when they all hit. ⬇️
