ALT The Syrian Studies Association Bulletin invites article submissions for its forthcoming special issue, “The Fall of the Assad Regime and the 'New Syria.'” In November-December 2024, Syrian revolutionaries stunned the world by overrunning Syrian government positions and storming the capital city of Damascus. In just 11 days, the 54-year-old Assad dynasty came to an end.How do these events reshape our understanding of Syria’s fourteen years of revolution and civil war, and the decades of one-party rule that preceded it? What comes next in the “new Syria”? The Bulletin is seeking research articles, research notes, intellectual analyses and personal reflections about these events from a variety of perspectives. We also seek reviews of recent books which could be relevant to thinking about the recently unfolding events in Syria, as well as books on the longer history of democratization, revolution and independence in the region of which they are part.

ALT We welcome submissions from scholars and practitioners who work on Syria in any relevant discipline, including sociology, religion, journalism, history, anthropology, international relations, archeology, media studies, environmental studies, music/art studies, etc. Please send book review proposals to book review editor David Motzafi-Haller ([email protected]). Word counts are flexible but generally range from 500-1500 for research notes and 1000-3000 for feature articles. Contributors are not required to be members of the Syrian Studies Association; graduate student contributions are welcome. The Syrian Studies Association (SSA) is an international association organized to encourage and promote research and scholarly understanding of Syria in all periods and in all academic disciplines. The SSA is a non-profit, non-political association affiliated with MESA (the Middle East Studies Association of North America).
