Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade.
If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade?
On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare.
There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain.
As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again.
This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Kemi Badenoch is absolutely right to rule out any pact with Reform. It would be sheer stupidity for the Conservative Party to waste its time debating deals with other parties when our biggest challenge is to earn back the trust of the British people. We have to earn the right to be heard again. We haven’t completely done that yet, and pretending otherwise would be a mistake.
As for Reform, I sometimes wonder what their leadership actually stands for. Are they on the left or the right? Do they even have a clear economic policy? Frankly, I don’t know. The public needs to know what WE stand for, what we believe and whether they can trust us to deliver.
We are the Conservative Party, not Reform. Kemi is a phenomenal leader, and she is absolutely right to focus on rebuilding that trust rather than wasting time talking about political pacts.

The uniparty is dead, a truly Conservative speech makes the divide with Labour very clear.
‘I am so pleased at a Conservative leader, making a Conservative speech!’

To all those worried about the state of conservative politics, Kemi Badenoch’s “Right Way” manifesto will be greatly reassuring. Here is a genuine conservative who believes in freedom, in tradition, and above all, in her country and wants Britain to be its best self. I read this with growing confidence that a restored and renewed Conservative Party can make Britain the great country the wider world needs it to be
A government that doesn’t know what it believes will be buffeted by events and achieve little.
Britain has been heading in the wrong direction because governments keep treating symptoms rather than causes - often trying to correct problems they themselves created.
The Right Way is the Conservative answer to this challenge.

Great to speak with @Jacob_Rees_Mogg, Caroline Inge, Federal Vice-President of the Liberal Party of Australia, and @Giordano__Ant, Secretary General of the ECR Party, about how we should respond to the rise of different political parties in our respective countries.
Kemi’s launch of the Right Way yesterday and our Conservative principles underpinning policy is the way to win back voters, particularly more women.

This is utterly obscene.
We have to be clear that this is not the kind of society we are.
Using a child in pornography, or even the suggestion of it, is just sickening.
If we are serious about protecting children from sexual harm, it starts way before the line this crosses.

Emma, when that mini-Budget was announced, you were Managing Director of TheCityUK, which welcomed it, saying it took ‘bold action to create the conditions for economic growth’.
You weren’t an MP, but your Labour colleagues at the time were calling for even MORE spending.
And as my successor as City Minister, you cheered as Rachel Reeves torched jobs, hurt farmers, attacked independent education and damaged businesses.
The lesson for is that all decisions must be forensically costed, with detailed ‘how-to’ plans to back them up. As a private sector finance director for 11 years, that is second nature to me and will be how the new Conservative Economic Unit will operate.
