Congratulations to NY State Society of Enrolled Agents for another successful annual convention. It’s always great to share the stage with distinguished tax educators and connect with America’s and New York’s Tax Experts.
Why do I see all these people on Facebook posting a CE/CPE certificate from some random class as a badge of honor?

The U.S. Treasury will reset the fixed rate on Series I Savings Bonds on Nov. 1. The current rate is 0.9%. One forecasting theory says the new rate will be 1.4%, but another says 1.3%. Why the difference? tipswatch.com/2026/10/25/the…

But that’s irrelevant. The whole point is telling people to have an AI agent make IT and security changes they don’t understand is irresponsible!

We loved welcoming this wonderful group of attendees and Expand Teams for a full day of learning with Angie Bhasin, @TGorcz, and of course, our lovely CEO Dominique Molina.

The IRS announced today that it is issuing automatic refunds now because it has changed its interpretation of whether the adoption credit is refundable. We covered this in Tom Talks Taxes several months ago.

There are seven material participation tests under §469. I knew about the significant participation test, but I didn't know it tied to an income recharacterization rule that affects passive loss planning and NIIT exposure.
It was a real eye-opener: you regularly learn something in tax that you had no idea existed, and it reminds us how dangerous quick answers to quick questions can be. Read about this rule that surprised me below. ⬇️
I roll my eyes hard whenever I see this on an email.
Are we getting lunch or forming a tax shelter? If your lunch email still carries a Circular 230 disclaimer, your signature needs an update. The rules that inspired that footer disappeared in 2014. Twelve years later, the boilerplate lives on. #TaxTwitter #EA #CPA

Replying to @TGorcz
@TGorcz and I discuss this often. I suspect some vendors want to throw tomatoes at us. Getting a 7216 isn't that difficult; I suspect many just don't want to admit what they are doing.
The number of accountants and tax preparers feeding sensitive client data into AI with zero regard for 7216 is troubling. Part of me wants to sit back with popcorn and watch the fallout. The other part wants to yell at them for the ignorance and stupidity. If you are blindly dumping client PII or tax data into AI without any 7216 consideration, you are exactly who I am talking about.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
Educators often have to pay their own work expenses out of pocket; thanks to changes in the OB3 Act, there are now two educator expense deductions, and another law change in September 2026 expands the pool of eligible educators.
In this week's Tom Talks Taxes edition, we break down who can deduct what and where. Link below ⬇️
Now that we have proposed regulations for the §128(c) Trump account contribution programs, are you seeing employers interested in offering this benefit?
The ability of employees to make pre-tax contributions to their child's Trump account seems to be a compelling reason to offer this benefit.
Don't know what this is, or what the rules are? Read my Tom Talks Taxes article from last month, linked in the comments.
