Every year on New Year’s Day my old neighborhood was covered in Times Square confetti. Every year on November 1st my new neighborhood is covered in Halloween litter. Next year I’ll be organizing a community clean up in advance—setting a reminder now!

there’s a really compelling film in this barn owl saga. i hope there’s someone working on this, beyond just the news outlets. high quality motion storytelling on this could go a long way for conservation

But they remain vulnerable, and their nesting site must be protected. New York City is home to more than eight million people, but we share this city with extraordinary wildlife. They deserve a safe place here, too.

I am so sad about this!! This little bird family was bringing me such joy
A shocking and terrible wildlife crime: earlier today, I learned from residents of West 75th Street that workers were disassembling the roof of the water tower housing Manhattan’s first barn owl nest in modern history. Cont’d #birdcpp #nature #wildlife

Ratatouille is such a great movie because it’s ruthlessly in favor of meritocratic inegalitarianism. “Anyone can cook,” not “everyone can cook.” The duty of Chef Linguini is to forfeit his arbitrary inherited status as a human and serve to elevate the deserving übermaus Remy.

If our small minds, for some convenience, divide this universe, into parts — physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology, and so on — remember that nature does not know it!

My mother died in 2015 of hereditary ALS. Her sister died in 2022. Their father died in 1974. In 1969 he sat his children down and told them that he was going to die, and he had passed this illness to them, and when they grew up they couldn't have any children of their own.

Again I say: The work of the home in 2026 is not making sourdough (although that can be fun). It’s dealing with medical billing.
She’s right. To get the skills needed to successfully run a household, you can’t stop at a BA. You really need to go to law school.

When I see young people at a dark, glamorous bar, I want to tell them, “This feels like a long chapter, but it’s going to be one of the shortest in the book.

China has gotten ahead of the US in biotechnology, largely by making their clinical trial system more effective. I covered this in a @nytimes article. Now, American patients are travelling there to have access to drugs they can't access at home. It's high time the US woke up and implemented much needed reforms.
"She had been through chemotherapy and surgery, but the cancer had now spread to her brain. And she didn’t qualify for the relevant clinical trials. “Too bad she’s not Chinese,” a doctor told her son... “She could go to a pharmacy in China and buy it.” kffhealthnews.org/health-ind…

regardless of the sleep deprivation & chemical reasons, postpartum depression is the most reasonable thing in the world. ur fat, in pain, ugly, ur body is broken, u don’t get hobbies 2 work on or accomplishments 2 measure or anything like that really. & all the while every day that passes ur beautiful perfect baby gets a little bit older & a little bit bigger. & after every beautiful transcendent moment of shocking glory big baby beauty, u see a flash of how fragile we all are & how fast life goes. & there’s nothing 2 distract u from the despair!!! ur forced 2 contemplate life & death all day long in ur stupid underpants!!!!!!!!

My concern is that this is just the legible lowest fringe of the situation and that cogsec is effectively dead. But as @exeuntdoteth and I agree, cogsec was always based on a false premise. The question isn't "are you infected" but "is your 'microbiome' net-coherent for multiscale health" or something like that. No one is "pure." We can only imagine purity because myelin sheaths on our neurons are from viral DNA. Mitochondria and cilia were once an invasion of the host cell. Living in a eukaryotic age means accepting a porous and plural emergent selfhood. In the meantime we absolutely need better epistemic tech.
