Ondo Police Bust Suspected Fake Dollar Printing Factory, Arrest One, Recover Three Bags of Counterfeit Notes
Operatives of the @OndoPoliceNg Command have uncovered a suspected counterfeit currency printing operation in Kiniso Village, via Ajue, in the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state, arresting one suspect and recovering three bags of suspected fake United States dollar notes.
The operation, carried out on October 29, 2026, followed an investigation into a complaint by a man identified as Yusuf Nasiru, a resident of Sabo, Okitipupa, who allegedly lost $6,000, valued at approximately ₦8.6 million, in a fraudulent foreign exchange transaction.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the complainant reported that two men, identified as Peter Desmond and Olami Toro, both residents of Ode-Irele, approached him at his shop on October 25, requesting to exchange US dollars for their naira equivalent.
Nasiru reportedly handed over $6,000 to the men but, while waiting to receive the naira equivalent, they allegedly returned the dollar notes, claiming they did not have enough money to complete the transaction, before leaving.
The complainant later discovered, upon closer examination, that the dollar notes returned to him were counterfeit and subsequently reported the incident to the police on October 28.
Following the complaint, operatives from the Okitipupa Divisional Police Headquarters commenced an investigation. Through intelligence gathering and technical tracking, they traced one of the suspects, Peter Desmond, to Kiniso Village, via Ajue, in the Odigbo Local Government Area.
Acting on information received from members of the community, the operatives raided the suspected hideout on October 29. During the operation, one suspect was arrested, while other occupants of the premises reportedly escaped through the perimeter fence.
A search of the premises led to the recovery of three bags containing suspected counterfeit United States dollar notes and a small wooden box believed to be connected to the alleged illegal printing operation. The recovered items were taken into police custody as exhibits.
Jimoh disclosed that the arrested suspect had provided useful information to assist the ongoing investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Felix Ohagwu, has directed that the investigation be intensified to identify and arrest other persons allegedly connected to the operation and establish the full extent of the suspected counterfeit currency network.
The police also urged members of the public to exercise caution when engaging in foreign currency transactions, particularly with unverified individuals, and to authenticate dollar notes before accepting them.
