Cloudflare has reported a staggering 20.5 million Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks blocked in the first quarter of 2025-a record-breaking figure that marks a 358% increase over the same period last year and a 198% jump from the previous quarter. This explosive growth means that Q1 2025 alone nearly surpassed the total number of DDoS attacks mitigated throughout all of 2024.
The surge is not just in frequency but also in intensity. In April 2025, Cloudflare successfully defended against the most powerful packet-rate DDoS attack ever recorded, peaking at 4.8 billion packets per second-an unprecedented 52% leap over the previous record. These hyper-volumetric attacks, some lasting just 35 to 45 seconds, are now so frequent that Cloudflare averaged eight such attacks per day in Q1, with over 700 incidents exceeding 1 Tbps or 1 billion packets per second.
Network-layer attacks are the main driver, accounting for 16.8 million of the total and soaring by 509% year-over-year. The data underscores a critical reality: digital threats are evolving at a pace that demands always-on, automated security solutions.
