Woman of the Day physicist and academic Laura Bassi born OTD 1711 in Bologna, the first woman to have a doctorate in science and the first woman to be a salaried professor in a university. There was a restriction though. Of course there was. She wasn’t allowed to teach male students. At no stage of her stellar career was she treated in the same way as her male peers.
Laura was a child prodigy. From the age of five, she was taught Latin, French and maths by her cousin. Latin was considered an unusual subject for her to learn. Of course it was. It was the key to knowledge as well a career in science so it was clearly wasted on a mere girl, but she subsequently put it to good use by lecturing and publishing in Latin. From the age of thirteen, the professor of medicine at the University of Bologna tutored her in philosophy, metaphysics, logic, and natural philosophy.
On 17 April 1732, 20 year old Laura took part in a public debate at the Palazzo Pubblico (the seat of the local government) with four professors in which she defended no fewer than 49 philosophical theses; providing written answers in Latin to questions posed by the panel and defending them verbally. It was a very unusual kind of exam, far more intensive than the kind experienced by male students. Of course it was.
She impressed them. Less than four weeks later, the University of Bologna awarded her a doctorate in philosophy, making the second woman in the world to earn one after Elena Cornaro Piscopia 54 years before.
On 27 June that year, Laura went through the same intense and very public grilling and was awarded an honorary post at the University of Bologna as a professor in physics. The same year, she became the first woman to be admitted to any scientific establishment when she was elected to the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna.
Laura’s rapid progress through the world of academia hit a snag when she married in 1738 aged 26. Her husband might have been a university lecturer in science with a degree in medicine in his own right but she was undoubtedly the better scientist and worse, as a married woman, she came in for a great deal of criticism. Of course she did. Women couldn’t possibly expect to marry AND continue to hold their fellowships. It went against every expectation and many in Bologna said so. Laura was only allowed to lecture on special occasions if the event was held in public so that women might conceivably attend. She could not lecture regular classes at the University because that meant her being alone with male students. Of course not, etc etc.
Ironically, marriage meant she could conduct lectures without such restrictions as long as she did it in her own home.
“It is six years since I began giving private physics classes in my house daily, for eight months of the year. I support these myself, paying for all the necessary equipment apart from that which my husband had made when he was lecturing in philosophy. The classes have gathered such momentum that they are now attended by people of considerable education, including foreigners, rather than by youths.”
The Academy of Sciences was reorganised by Pope Benedict XIV in 1745 to create a group of 25 Benedettini (leading scientists) who would be expected to present their research regularly. He was a great admirer of Laura’s ability and she was an obvious choice for the 25th post but to confer such an honour on a woman was highly controversial. His compromise? Laura became a Benedettini but without the same voting privileges as the 24 men. Of course…oh, you know the script.
Somehow, Laura found the time to combine academic studies and caring for her and her husband’s children: at least eight of them (there may have been more) of whom only five survived to adulthood.
She was appointed to the Chair of Experimental Physics at Bologna in 1776 but obviously, it demanded a lengthy debate quite unlike the process applied to male candidates (I feel another “of course” comment coming on…) but it was approved as long as Laura’s husband officially became her assistant. (Add as many “of courses” here as you like).
Laura didn’t have long in the prestigious post though. She died just over a year later in 1778 quite suddenly as the result of “an attack in the chest”. Silver laurels were placed on her head and the Benedettini paid tribute to her at her funeral.

I mean every word of this.
This bill is beyond repair.
If it passes I confidently expect it to be struck down on human rights grounds.
🇬🇧 Strong interventions from Gay Men's Network lead, former criminal barrister Dennis Kavanagh, during today's Conversion Practices Bill committee evidence session:
"It makes it a crime to say to your teenage daughter, I want you to love your body, I want you to grow up to be a happy lesbian, I don't think you're a man."
"A chilling effect of the most tyrannical kind."
"So poorly drafted, and so incoherent that it cannot be rescued."
"This Bill is ripe for a definition of incompatibility."
"That won't be a chilling effect, that will be a deep freeze"

I want you all to know this.
There are 650 MPs in Parliament. Yet the one MP chosen by @UKLabour to Chair the Bill Committee for the controversial, dangerous and dismally bad draft legislation, the Conversion Practices Bill, is Alex Barros-Curtis. Until July 2024, when Alex was given a very safe Labour seat in Cardiff, he was the Head of the Labour Party's Governance and Legal Unit in London. This was a department set up to investigate complaints against members of the Labour Party. Complaints of antisemitism, Islamophobia, abuse, and of course latterly, mostly women holding legally-protected 'Gender Critical' (sex realist) beliefs. Alex oversaw the investigation of hundreds of members who liked or tweeted gender critical or feminist views. I was one of them. He investigated me, as a sitting Labour MP, for 13 months.
13 months to 'investigate' one like of one tweet. I had a great lawyer, one of the names we're all now familiar with, and I had to crowdfund to pay for his (excellent) work.
They first tried in 2020. But the screenshots crudely attached to that passive aggressive, threatening-sounding email from LP admin staff were so risible that I replied that it was too ridiculous for me to waste my precious time on. They left it. Years of Starmer bumbling and stuttering through interviews about whether he had spoken to me, whether he supported me, etc followed. My feminist sins continued apace.
And then I 'liked' a tweet by my GC comedian friend @Glinner. He had mocked Eddie'Suzy' for comparing his choice to wear traditional women's clothing, fake plastic breasts and nails, to those being persecuted by the Nazis during WWII. I found his sarcasm, as a award-winning comedy writer in the face of such offensive narcissism amusing and so 'liked' it. I found it absurd and obscene that Izzard, an extremely privileged and wealthy man, who openly changed his 'gender' at will, should write himself into history falseley as someone who would have been oppressed due to a circumstance beyond his control. We all know the groups who were tortured, starved and killed...
There is obviously more to my story, I will tell it all, it's just one chapter of the years of spiteful abusive and bullying practices meted out to me by the Labour Party managers. Not those who'd achieved office on merit, or even unexpectedly, but those in the club, often having failed to be elected themselves.
So Barros-Curtis who we were repeatedly told led 'the many *independent* inquiries into women members and MPs like me, now often stands as a trans-rights activist on the Labour backbenches. He has also been gifted the role of Chair of this Committee and is a huge supporter of this Bill. And I am not a part of the Bill Committee, although plenty of TRA MPs are. Does that sound like the democratic scrutiny of legislation to you?

La Scap has written extensively about women's rights & child safeguarding. She's a left wing Serbian woman who survived massive upheaval & had to escape the conflict in her birth country. To call her "racist right" is to ignore all the evidence of her character, her words and her life
But it's part of the wider fairytale that goes: Once Upon A Time the terven went fascist & turned on the poor noble left wing feminists who, alone, despise the nazis. Who alone stand brave & true against hatred & racism & cruelty. It is such a head up one's own arse narrative, my gosh. I'm sorry but you are not special or rare for coming to the conclusion nazi = bad
In reality, many women woke up & decided that particular small group of prominent left wing feminists were fundamentally wrong in parts of their analysis
An analysis that, at that time, conceded female language to men, didnt prioritise trans widows & female prisoners, & wasnt willing to go the root of the problem in law. Despite claiming to spring from radical feminism
An analysis that also insisted there were untouchable women in this fight that we mustn't get close to in case we got danger cooties. And if we did it would in turn make us untouchable women too (which, to the LWF, it did).
For example, the reason the attempt at ostracising Posie Parker was such a big issue isn't, as those left wing feminists would have it, that Posie is fash & we all chose to eventually join her in a jolly goose step against their advice. The divide isn't a political one really
Because at the point where she was surrounded by a baying mob in New Zealand and no flicker of female Solidarity stirred in most of that small group to even speak up about that violence we reached a point of no return. Even for many of those who didn't agree with her on many things
Another point of no return was publishing a whole magazine issue about her politics while not having the grace to accurately represent her, give her right of reply or sincerely engage with those women who were risking their safety at her public meetings, & facing male violence.
There was an active effort to shame women into agreement with the LWF and dramatics when it didn't work.
I've been wrong multiple times on here, and I will be again, but I do try to listen to other women who have experiences and perspectives I don't...
And the BIGGEST fault line between the small group of left wing feminists & a majority of the movement has been the total inability by the LWF to listen, discuss, &understand the perspectives of others. To even treat those perspectives as possibly legitimate, because the second we've broken with their worldview we've been rewritten as soft on nazis or bullies or "racist right".
It's the energy of the witchunt and it has fostered an incredibly toxic environment, led to the inevitable "infighting" and meant that a lot of women who otherwise could have focused entirely on the serious fight have also had to take their eye off the ball at least now and again to check if everything is still on fire
I am certain sincere LWF have also been swept up in the inferno and endured very personal remarks because of it too because once the pies start flying we all get custard to the face
But at the very centre of it all you don't have Posie who largely said fuck off and went her own way when the LWF wouldnt stand with her. Or someone like Aja whose been accused and maligned
You instead have those, like JCJ, who are very comfortable maligning vast numbers of women (mothers, lesbians, disabled women, trans widows, women trying to change policy in different fields etc) while consistently behaving like the fellow child in the playground who pulls your ponytail until you push her off you & then cries to the teacher that you've attacked her
The terven deserved far better
So does La Scap
The poster here is lying and, worse, probably doesn't know it because the propaganda against other women by JCJ et al has worked so very well
Yuk

Proposed conversion practices bans may seem harmless.
In reality they are a wildly illiberal intrusion into family life that threatens to turn Britain into a Stasi state.

There are several damning revelations here but perhaps the most shocking is that BBC publicists REFUSED to promote a film about October 7.
None were disciplined. A non-BBC employee was then employed to promote the film - even though BBC employees were being paid to do this.

Some people seem baffled by the political earthquake in British Columbia, Canada’s most gender-mad province, which has just voted in a Conservative government for the first time in a century. They might want to read David Thomas’s piece in the National Post from earlier this year. 👇 Parents are really sick of people telling their kids lies and punishing those with dissenting views. As for the BC Human Rights Commission, which fined Barry Neufeld $750,000 for saying that the transitioning of kids is tantamount to child abuse…..
