Villagers in Haridwar staged a protest after administration officials arrived at night to seal a room inside a madrasa. Local Muslims objected to the action, demanding that authorities specify the alleged deficiencies and issue a formal notice instead of sealing the room. The villagers said that if the madrasa had violated any rules, the administration should clearly communicate the reasons and follow due process. They also challenged the selective sealing of one room, saying they were prepared to approach the court over the matter.

Jamia Millia Islamia students on Thursday called off their 18-day protest and hunger strike after the university administration agreed to restore the students’ union through elections. According to an order issued by Registrar Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, the university will complete and implement the Students’ Union Constitution by May 15, 2027, with elections to be held within six weeks of the academic session beginning on July 16. The polls are therefore expected by the end of August 2027. The administration has also ordered the revocation of show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, suspensions, rustications and campus bans linked to the protest. PhD scholar Elaiya Kumar confirmed that students had accepted the decision and called off the agitation. The protest began on October 12, with students demanding the restoration of the union and a definite election schedule. Jamia last held student union elections in 2005.
