Villagers in Haridwar staged a protest after administration officials arrived at night to seal a room inside a madrasa. Local Muslims objected to the action, demanding that authorities specify the alleged deficiencies and issue a formal notice instead of sealing the room. The villagers said that if the madrasa had violated any rules, the administration should clearly communicate the reasons and follow due process. They also challenged the selective sealing of one room, saying they were prepared to approach the court over the matter.

Jamia Millia Islamia students on Thursday called off their 18-day protest and hunger strike after the university administration agreed to restore the students’ union through elections. According to an order issued by Registrar Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi, the university will complete and implement the Students’ Union Constitution by May 15, 2027, with elections to be held within six weeks of the academic session beginning on July 16. The polls are therefore expected by the end of August 2027. The administration has also ordered the revocation of show-cause notices, disciplinary actions, suspensions, rustications and campus bans linked to the protest. PhD scholar Elaiya Kumar confirmed that students had accepted the decision and called off the agitation. AIMIM leader Dr Shoaib Jamai has expressed concern over allegations that the warden of Jamia Millia Islamia’s girls’ hostel is pressuring students to vacate their rooms amid the ongoing protest for the restoration of the students’ union. Jamai accused the administration of trying to create fear among students and said such actions would not be tolerated. He asserted that protesters would not back down until the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) was restored. The allegations come amid continued student demonstrations and tensions over the university’s handling of the agitation.

Students at Jamia Millia Islamia are protesting during online classes by changing their profile pictures to posters reading “Restore JMISU” and “Respect my existence or expect my resistance,” while raising slogans such as “Inquilab Aayega.” Meanwhile, the university’s Department Subject Associations have opposed the administration’s October 28 order extending online classes until the end of the first semester. In memorandums, student representatives said the lack of a fixed date for resuming physical classes has disrupted academic life and left students uncertain about their studies. They also raised concerns about rent, food and other expenses despite being unable to attend classes on campus. Several association members are reportedly planning to resign en masse in protest.
