The most harrowing of my disclosures to the Department of Justice was being sexually assaulted by an instructor a few weeks into basic training. I was 21. This was corroborated by 2 officers during a Garda investigation. This individual eventually became Acting Director General of @IrishPrisons & after a long & lucrative predatory career was made a parole board member. The DPP declined to prosecute William Connoly because that’s #HowIrelandWorks #WeWillNotBeSilenced

And right now our defence minister Helen McEntee is concerned with one war in particular: the war between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
McEntee says Irish troops should be deployed to Lebanon as part of a new EU mission involved with not only peacekeeping – but peace enforcement.
Peace enforcement includes joining “coalitions of the willing” and fighting wars of aggression like the 20-year Afghanistan war, and the wars in Iraq, which claimed the lives of well over a million people.
If we consider the ideals the state was founded on, it is clear that Irish soldiers should never be involved in these kinds of missions.

No. We don't. Obviously.
The word "Lebanon" is teed up like an hypnotic buzzword here.
You are supposed to hear it, whip out your pom pom cheerleader kit & merrily dance, pushing our young people to risk their lives in some intractable quagmire.

of course a fascist syncretist like Vigeland - who tried her able-best self to shoehorn a nazi-inked, babykilling rapist into the US Senate as a "progressive" Democrat - would take an institution-serving, "be wary of non-Democrats" lesson from West's astroturfed vanity run.

The UN is NOT "a grouping of states." It is a universal forum for global diplomacy and conflict prevention established by the UN Charter after World War 2, 'to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war' by working to maintain international peace through the peaceful resolution of disputes between states. It is *the* source of international legitimacy for peacekeeping operations.
A UNSC mandate means a peacekeeping mission conforms to the fullest extent possible with international law and is not being pursued over the objections of a superpower. A neutral country that wishes to remain neutral and avoid getting drawn into superpower rivalries should restrict itself to UN-mandated peacekeeping missions.
The EU is a regional bloc of states, attempting to assert itself as a geopolitical actor with strategic interests, increasingly by force projection. It isn't remotely the same thing as the UN. Increasingly, the EU's military missions are explicitly perceived as part of the EU's conflict with a superpower.
A MINIMUM test for ensuring an EU military mission is compatible with Ireland's neutrality is by requiring that it also enjoys a UN mandate before deploying to it. If it has no UN mandate, there is an unacceptable risk it is likely to make Ireland party to a conflict between superpowers, i.e. not neutral. A neutral country has no place becoming involved in such a mission.
The fact that the government has already announced its plans to involve Ireland in TWO such missions after the Triple Lock is abolished (EUNAVFOR Irini and EUSM Lebanon) is all the proof we need that FFG in government cannot under any circumstances be trusted to maintain our neutrality, and must be compelled to do so by force of law. The Triple Lock must remain in place.
Some people seem to think that a mandate for a mission that comes from the UN is inherently superior to one devised by the members of the European Union. That is not the case. The UN does not possess any unworldly wisdom. It is a grouping of states just like the EU. We should examine UN & EU mandates with the same rigour and work out what works best for us. We will have a bigger say in any EU mandated mission.

Did the State really argue this Gaza student whose mother, two sisters, brother, grandparents and aunt were killed by Israel couldn’t demonstrate a ‘strong obligation to return to Palestine when her studies ended’ such as ‘family ties’??

So not neutral then. Not peacekeeping.
The measure is part of a move to transform the Irish military into a force capable of the home defence of the country along with taking part in EU expeditionary operations such as the EU Rapid Deployment Capability, also known as the EU Battlegroup.
