In this episode I trace the Pauline-Patristic style displacements and inversions of Jesus’s ministry and teachings that Stephen Wolfe @PerfInjust subversively engages in. On page fifteen of The Case for Christian Nationalism, Wolfe admits it himself: "I assume the Reformed theological tradition... I have chosen to assume this system and work from it." His theology doesn't come from any type of encounter with Jesus of Nazareth or his ministry; it comes from Turretin, Heidegger, Witsius, à Brakel, and Calvin. That makes him the paradigm case for my "two-founder thesis": the historical-critical and objectively real verdict that Paul functioned as the founder of Christianity. Wherein, a Torah-observant, apocalyptic, Jewish restoration movement centered on the imminent reign of God was progressively transposed into a Hellenistic salvation religion built from categories Jesus nor the disciples would recognize or endorse. Wolfe's classical theism (simple, immutable, impassible) is a God who cannot repent, grieve, or be moved by intercession, unlike the God of Exodus 32 or the father who runs to the prodigal son. Wolfe's synthetic Christ figure is the homoousios Christ of Nicaea, exercising a twofold kingship that makes the civil magistrate a vassal under Messiah; coherent, but not the Torah-observant apocalyptic prophet of the Synoptic Gospels, whom Wolfe almost never engages directly. His anthropology licenses ethnic preference as unfallen residue by inflating the Hebrew chet, avon, and pesha (specific covenantal failures) into the cosmic Pauline hamartia. And underneath all three runs the same lexical chain: emunah narrowed into propositional fides, hesed converted into scholastic charis, teshuvah into forensic poenitentia, and ruach (the Spirit who moves over the waters and fills the community at Pentecost) reified and then, in Wolfe's system, almost entirely set aside. That absent pneumatology isn't an oversight; it's the gap through which Wolfe's most consequential move slips through unexamined, transferring what the tradition reserves to the church onto an ethnically homogeneous Christian nation instead. Set against his 2026 trajectory, the Study Report on Reformed Christian Politics, the Overture 90 campaign, the seeding of Reformed seminaries; this reads as a hardening, not a revision. None of this makes Wolfe dishonest within the realm of Christianity though, as he engages in the same novel and innovative syntheses as Paul then the Patristic Fathers did. His retrieval is real, and within the tradition he occupies, defensible on its own terms. The problem is that the tradition stops centuries short of its own advertised source. Wolfe's "fons" are seventeenth-century Reformed scholastics, themselves heirs of fifteen centuries of the same transpositions. To reach the actual fons (the Galilean prophet who called for a teshuvah that cannot be coerced, who refused the kingdoms of the world laid at his feet, who renounced the sword) you have to pass through the very layer where Wolfe's retrieval terminates. The figure on the other side isn't the patron of a Christian magistrate. He's that project's most precise counter-witness. The choice isn't "Christian Nationalism or modern liberalism”, it's the Christ of Nicaea deployed as Caesarist warrant, or the Galilean prophet of the basileia. In this episode I break down the theological subversions of @JoelWebbon, pastor at @rightresponsem and host at @nxrstudios. Webbon presents himself as recovering authentic biblical Christianity. This lecture tests that claim against the Synoptic Jesus (his teachings and ministry) and finds Webbon’s theology fails at every load-bearing point. Webbon's recent argument that Jesus wasn't "really" Jewish repeats ancient Docetism and severs Jesus from the Torah-observant Galilean prophet of the gospels, in the same vein as Paul’s and the Patristis’ syntheses did. Webbon’s "faith" is Pauline-Patristic pistis/fides, that is, creedal assent enforced by the state; not the kinetic, covenantal emunah Jesus commended. Webbon’s "kingdom" is Constantine's imperium christianum, not the theocentric, mercy-disclosive basileia tou theou Jesus refused to politicize (even rejecting Satan's offer of the kingdoms of the world). His "grace" trades the relational hesed/rahamim of the Prodigal Son and Good Samaritan for a punitive theology backing civil enforcement. Webbon’s theonomic reactivation of Mosaic capital penalties inverts Jesus's own Mercy Filter (seen clearest in the woman caught in adultery). His postmillennial gradualism contradicts Jesus's imminent Jewish apocalypticism. And ironically, his book The Hyphenated Heresy (which rightly diagnoses "Judeo-Christianity" as a modern construct) never notices that "Pauline-Patristic Christianity" is the same kind of construct, one step further back. Even his own church's 1689 Baptist Confession, with its rejection of state-enforced religion, condemns his theonomy on its own terms. The Jerusalem community led by James (Torah-observant, politically powerless, martyred rather than seizing power) is the counter-witness Webbon's tradition erased. While @ConceptualJames and @PhilWMagness (et al) are vastly superior in their philosophical exegetics, I’ve spent most of my adult life researching the theological historical specifics that make up the modern Christian discourse in The West. @ConceptualJames et al are all are amazing at breaking down th philosophy behind the subversive movements that threaten the American Dream but they possess a certain disconnect from the theological underpinnings when it comes to the Jewish/Christian/Jesus/Christ historical-critical exegetics and eisegetics that make up the Post-Liberal/Christian Nationalist/New Right that is rapidly infecting the American milieu. Why the Post-Liberal/Christian Nationalist/New Right doesn’t accept “repentance” nor engage in self-reproach nor believes in individual spiritual introspection, is very specifically based in their modern Pauline-Patristic Synthesis that is in itself based upon the then novel Patristic Christ Synthesis (Conciliar/Imperial) that is in turn based upon Paul’s novel Hellenistic Synthesis (Cosmic/Ontological). The “New Right” and all of its denominations have bought into the underlying premise of Christianity: that humans only possess agency in service of the collective corporate cosmic Christian body. Paul and the Patristics laid the foundation for subverting Jesus’s teachings about sin, repentance, and salvation by conflating the cosmic Christ figure with the Human Jewish Apocalyptic Son of God. And in doing so, everything downstream was reconceptualized. So Jesus’s teachings on “sin” became Paul’s own gospel on the (capital S) Sin as a cosmic tyrant from which only the cosmic man-god can rescue you……. Jesus’s teachings on personal contrition or repentance become obsolete. For Paul and the Patristics, and now modern Christianity (that the New Right embraces) the only things that matter are not internalizing the Torah so extremely that it reorients your heart, instead you’re a prisoner in a cosmic fiesh-prison and your only rescue is from a cosmic vertical-visionary experience in which you simply “believe” and you’re saved into a corporate-collective or “The Church”/”Body of Christ”. These novel and complete reconceptualizations (by Paul, the Patristics, and modern Christianity) of Jesus’s God-ordained teachings are the imposition of unbiblical Godless eisegetic hermeneutics that allow individuals like @JoelWebbon and @PerInjust and @contramordor to preach their politicized theology wherein they can dismiss away actual concrete Full Human Agency in favor of a Roman-style imperial political architecture and ecclesiology . Just like Paul and the Patristics they take the Hebrew-originated words and terms and ideals, that Jesus of Nazareth lived and preached, and they hollow them out, replacing their operative mechanics (their substance), with hellenistic anthropological and psychological categories. They actively subvert the Son of God and his ministry by utilizing the same eisegetical perversions introduced by Paul and made orthodoxy by the Patristic Fathers. For instance, Jesus was a progenitor of our modern understanding of individual human agency and personal moral conscious. In fact the Founders of the US specifically used both the Hebrew Scriptures and Jesus’s synoptic ministry teachings as their major influence when shaping the Declaration and Constitution. They dd not use any of Paul’s epistle or letters specifically because Paul inverts and cosmologizes everything Jesus taught regarding personal agency, sin, repentance, and salvation, etc. Where Jesus bucked the ethnic corporatism and collectivism of Judaism (in order to advance God's Will that every tree must bear its own fruit while the whole orchard is subordinate) Paul instead adopted the Greco-Roman assimilationist ideals, adapting them into his cosmic corporate identity wherein a person is only a limb or organ within the overall "Body of Christ".
