Today’s New York Times reporting reveals disturbing new evidence of an organized effort to manipulate Alaska’s elections by recruiting candidates—including one with the same name as an incumbent U.S. Senator—to deliberately confuse voters and misdirect their votes. The Alaska Division of Elections investigated these very concerns in June of this year. The new reporting substantially supports the Division’s findings.
I am therefore directing the Department of Public Safety to investigate whether this scheme violated Alaska’s laws and whether criminal charges or civil action are warranted. The evidence will determine what happens next.
Alaskans have a fundamental right to vote for the candidate they actually intend to support. Deliberately tricking voters into casting their ballots for someone else strikes at the integrity of our elections.
Anyone or any organization found to have broken the law must be held accountable.

These photos were taken in Fairbanks on Aug. 25 at the Humble Roots Brewery. It was just sent to the Landmine following the @nytimes story about @MaryPeltola and Decoy Dan Sullivan. The person who sent it remembered taking it and thought it was relevant after the story came out.
The person with the beanie is David Leslie, a Democratic U.S. candidate who finished fourth in the primary. The man across from him is Eric Croft, the chair of the Alaska Democratic Party. The man next to him is Mattie Hull, who previously worked for Fairbanks Sen. Scott Kawasaki (D).
Leslie had said he had not planned on withdrawing from the race because Peltola wasn’t anti-Israel enough to his liking. But six days later he did in fact withdraw from the race. This bumped up Republican Gerald Heikes, leaving Peltola as the sole Democrat along with @SenDanSullivan and Decoy Dan Sullivan.
Wonder what they talked about over the beer?!

This is an important point from Eric. The nonincumbent Dan Sullivan made representations to the court that he was not trying to confuse or mislead voters and that he ran as a Republican because he believes in conservative principles and Republican viewpoints. This sets up another major problem about whether he misled the court in addition to the public.
