URGENT: July 31 was supposed to be Finn Renard’s last day as a junior lifeguard intern in San Diego. He was 17. The anchor swimmer. His team was behind. He ran into Mission Bay and dove hard to catch up. His head hit the ocean floor. He was knocked out. His neck was broken. Fellow lifeguards pulled him out and kept him alive long enough to reach Scripps Memorial in La Jolla. Surgeons replaced a vertebra and fused his cervical spine. For a few days, his family thought he was turning a corner. He sat up. He talked. Teammates visited. Then his lungs failed. He was intubated. Later placed on ECMO. He has some movement in his arms.
