In March 2026, Irish news publication @thejournal_ie published a report by journalist Andrew Walsh examining concerns surrounding the detention of Peyvand Naimi, a young Bahá’í arrested in Iran on January 8 during nationwide protests. The article featured testimony from his Dublin-based relative, Sama Sabet, who described the distress experienced by family members amid allegations that Naimi had been subjected to prolonged torture, mock executions, and forced confessions. The report detailed allegations that Naimi had endured two mock hangings, severe physical and psychological abuse, and extended periods of solitary confinement at Kerman Prison. His family disputed the accusations made against him, including allegations concerning the deaths of security personnel, maintaining that he had already been detained when the alleged incidents occurred. At the time of publication, relatives expressed fears that he could face execution, while raising concerns about his access to legal representation and communication with family members. Revisiting this report seven months after its publication highlights the concerns raised at the time about the treatment of Bahá’í detainees in Iran and the importance of international attention to their cases. The article also examined the longstanding persecution of Iran’s Bahá’í community, including restrictions on education, employment, and fundamental rights, while recalling Ireland’s previous statements at the United Nations condemning religious discrimination. Through the experiences of Naimi and his family, the coverage raises broader questions about religious freedom, due process, and international accountability. Thank you Freedom House team, led by CEO @jamiemfly. Your work to free political prisoners and stand in solidarity with their causes around the world is an impactful as the evidence of their survival through the impunity metted on them by authoritarian regimes. Thank you.
Last Friday, Freedom House was honored to join the October 30 Coalition at the Lincoln Memorial for the “Roll Call for Freedom,” alongside families, loved ones, friends, and former political prisoners who read names and shared stories. We won't stop advocating until all are free. #FreeThemAll #FreedomStartsWithAName

CPJ has documented more than 1,050 journalists murdered since the organization began keeping records in 1992. More than 30 years after CPJ began documenting these killings, eight out of ten journalist murders remain unpunished. cpj.org/issue/impunity/ #EndImpunity #IDEI

We wish the United Nations would do more to End Impunity against Journalists and truth tellers. It is unfortunately a difficult task because authoritarian regimes around the world are doing everything possible to maintain the status quo. What can we do differently?
When journalists are silenced, we all lose. On the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, and every day, we need to protect those who stand up for us all. ohchr.org/en/statements-and-…

Freedom starts with a name. 👊🫶 Last week, at the Lincoln Memorial, former political prisoners and families of those still imprisoned read aloud the names of political prisoners from around the world. See below for a list of most of the names that were read. They read their names so that those behind bars know they HAVE NOT BE forgotten, and because speaking their names publicly DOES HELP SECURE their release. We listened because those who have suffered imprisonment, and the families still fighting for their loved ones, deserve to be heard first. It was one of the most moving moments of an extraordinary week in Washington. ❤️ I had the privilege of helping co-lead the October 30 Coalition, bringing together ten organizations, former prisoners, families, lawyers, and advocates to turn solidarity into action. I was especially proud to help secure meetings at the State Department for our partners from eight countries, giving them the opportunity to raise individual cases directly with U.S. officials, and to help secure 156 signatures for our joint statement marking the International Day of Political Prisoners: freethem1by1.org/joint-state…. We also brought current and former congressional staffers and executive branch leaders at my old haunts at the McCain Institute, celebrated those who have helped bring prisoners home at NED, and spent a full day sharing lessons, building relationships, and developing strategies to secure more releases. The timing also felt like a gift personally. After nearly a year of quiet work, I had the opportunity to share Free Them One by One (@FREETHEM1by1 FT1by1), (instagram.com/freethem1by1?d…) through which I’m working to represent political prisoners and others wrongfully detained. And I was delighted that the week coincided with my appointment as Senior Fellow for Political Prisoner Advocacy and Strategic Partnerships at the Free Russia Foundation @4freerussia_org ! I’m particularly grateful to @DamonMacWilson and the @NEDemocracy team, @vkaramurza and @ekaramurza, @Natalia_Budaeva, Ian McGinnity, @LantosSwettK, Chelsea Hedquist, Candace Bryan Abbey, @maradiaga, @BertaValle, @liliantintori, @leopoldolopez, @JaredGenser, Roger Carstens, @jamiemfly, Brian Tronic, and my colleagues across the October 30 Coalition and beyond, including @3Ooctober, @4freerussia_org, @freedomhouse, @HRF, @LantosFndn, @McCainInstitute, @NEDemocracy, @TheRWCHR, and @WLCongress. Most of all, to the former prisoners and families who continue fighting for those still behind bars. Now back to the individual cases. There’s much more work to do. Free them all. One by one. Some of the names read at the Lincoln Memorial: Our joint statement: freethem1by1.org/joint-state… #Oct30Coalition #FreeThemOneByOne #FreedomStartsWithAName nitter.cf/pedropizano/status/211…

Feeling incredible lucky and so grateful to have been able to launch the John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative (FPPI) at @ASU's @McCainInstitute, this Monday in NYC, chaired by none other than one @SenJohnMcCain's heroes, and my own, the indefatigable @VKaraMurza. Probably one of the greatest honors of my life so far to convene this amazing group of people and be able do this work to free political prisoners and hostages. We'll start by doing everything we can to free Jesús Armas (@jesusarmasccs @freejesusarmas), Maria Kalesnikova (@by_kalesnikava @TatsianaKhomich), Israeli American Hostages, and Mzia Amaghlobeli (@MAmaghlobeli @t_muradashvili), and others. Here is @JRezaian's amazing coverage for his first ever newsletter as the New Director for Press Freedom Initiatives (@wpPressFreedom) at @WashingtonPost : s2.washingtonpost.com/camp-r…. Here's video of the event: youtube.com/watch?v=iCrxMSpV…. Here's our press release, and below is my quote: mccaininstitute.org/resource… Here's our website: mccaininstitute.org/fppi. The #FPPI advisory council will be chaired by @vkaramurza and includes @wppressfreedom’s @jrezaian, @ekaramurza, @Billbrowder, Amb. Roger Carstens, @ccaryl, @hostageus Liz Cathcart, @FayheeRyan, Sarah (Levinson) Moriarty, and @sianamazi. “Fighting for the freedom of political prisoners and hostages is critical in today’s world when more and more people are being used as pawns,” said @PedroPizano, assistant director of the John McCain Freedom for Political Prisoners Initiative and Global Democracy Programs at the @McCainInstitute. “Political prisoners and hostages are ‘the partners and prophets of tomorrow’ and victims of a geopolitical game. They also put a face to the problem of autocracy: full democracies do not take or hold political prisoners or hostages in the first place. We are proud to convene this impressive group of experts to advocate for the release of those unjustly held around the world.” Thank you to everyone at the @McCainInstitute for the opportunity and for all your help and support with FPPI and with the event: @McCainJack, Rick, Carla, @EvelynNFarkas, @AbramsKL, @PaulFaganDC, @AmyGrappone, @LauraLThornton, @CorbanTeague, @ScottWNemeth, Staci, Cole, Alice, Makayla, Anna, Emma, Emma, Margaret, Thuy Lan, Gilbert, Colin, Sammy, Julia, May, and more. #Freethemall #Bringthemhome #FPPI #JMFPPI

More than 160 states have worked together to identify practical steps to strengthen respect for international humanitarian law (IHL) and better protect people affected by armed conflict. The guidance is being published ahead of the Global IHL Dialogue in Geneva this week, and the High-Level Conference on Humanity in War in Jordan in December. Covering issues ranging from the protection of essential services to the impact of new technologies in warfare, this guideline translates commitments into concrete action and puts humanity at the heart of decisions made before and during armed conflict. The rules of war exist to limit suffering. What is needed now is the political will to put them into practice. Read more: ms.spr.ly/6012aNNYs

🔴🇨🇩 "If this network hadn't existed, I think I wouldn't be here today." – Honneur David Safari, Congolese journalist & @laprunellerdc's Editor 👉 In December 2025, journalist Honneur-David Safari, who uses Forbidden Stories’ SafeBox Network to secure his ongoing investigations, was kidnapped in Bukavu, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. As soon as we learned about his abduction, we publicly sent a signal to his captors: if Honneur was not released, we would continue his investigations together with our global network of journalists. We actively spread this message, particularly through local radio stations. "Forbidden Stories was one of the very first organizations to mobilize. Their alert helped notify so many other journalists, so many other media outlets within the network. And that really changed everything.” Three days later, Honneur was released. In the DRC, at least 30 journalists have been killed over the past three decades. According to the Congolese press freedom organisation Journaliste en Danger (JED), none of these murders has been fully solved. On this November 2, the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Honneur’s testimony shows how the SafeBox Network offers a concrete way to challenge this widespread impunity. 🎥 Watch the full video: youtube.com/watch?v=ai2Lxigx… 🌎 Like him, other journalists are under threat. Help us secure their ongoing investigations. Donate now: : forbiddenstories.org/fr/don/ @Honneurdavid1 #RDC #SafeBoxNetwork #ProtectJournalists #EndImpunity #PressFreedom

Today, on the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, we honor the courageous journalists who risk their safety, their freedom, and sometimes their lives to report the truth. Among them is James W. Foley, whose commitment to telling the stories of people too often forgotten ultimately cost him his life. Jim's story is a powerful reminder of the dangers journalists face in their work and of the urgent need to protect press freedom around the world. We remember journalists who have been threatened, imprisoned, injured, or killed simply for doing their jobs. Their work shines a light on injustice, amplifies unheard voices, and helps build a more informed world. On this day, we recommit ourselves to advocating for the safety of journalists, supporting accountability for those who target them, and upholding the enduring belief that truth matters.
