Clearing barrels are dumb and create a mentality that it is ok to fail.
I would say a vast majority of NDs that I have been witness to were into clearing barrels.
They are dumb.
Clearing your weapon is a skill level one task.
Individual clears weapon then an NCO, regardless of the rank of the individual, verifies (with white light if necessary).
Good to go.
NOTHING FELT MORE STUPID AFTER A LONG PATROL THAN THAT DAMN CLEARING BARREL.
You finally made it back inside the wire exhausted, filthy, hungry, and ready to dump your gear.
But nope…
First stop: the clearing barrel.
Get out of the trucks and stand in line. Clear your weapon. Get checked. Do it right.
Chow, a shower, and your rack were only minutes away, but somehow that barrel felt like one more patrol.

On Saturday, Hot Spot Fishing Charters, a Pensacola-based charter fishing company found and recovered a large distinctive delta-wing unmanned aerial vehicle in the Gulf of America, several miles off the western coast of Florida.
The UAV, found by the charter group during a six-hour fishing tour, shares a striking resemblance with the Iranian Shahed-136, but is likely either a Low-cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (LUCAS) or a Griffon Aerospace MQM-172 Arrowhead, both of which are American-built and designed copies of the Shahed.
So far the U.S. Air Force and nearby Eglin Air Force Base have declined to comment on the discovery, with Hot Shot Charters stating that authorities arrived later in the day to retrieve the drone.
The Americal division also formed and activated on foreign soil, in 1942 on the French island of New Caledonia.
The “American, New Caledonian Division” was later redesignated the 23rd infantry division.
In 1967 the division was reactivated in Vietnam, also on foreign soil.
On Sept. 21, 1917, the #2ndInfantryDivision was officially constituted in the Regular Army.
A month later, it formally organized in Bourmont, France, making it the only U.S. Army division formed on foreign soil.
My personal head canon is that Meadow was killed by whoever killed Tony.
The sequence: Meadow opens the diner door, the bell rings, Tony looks up and is shot by the Members Only guy, Meadow freezes and screams, and the guy shoots her because she’s blocking his exit.
Meadow’s devolution over the series is easily one of the most tragic arcs in the show.
Early on, she feels like the one Soprano who might actually break the cycle. Sure, she's a spoiled teenager, but she has real principles, wanting to be a doctor or work with immigrants. She's also the only one willing to hold a mirror up to Tony, like boldly asking him if he's in the Mafia or refusing to drive Davey Scatino's daughter's car because she knows it came from blood money.
But Jackie Jr.’s death breaks her. Deep down, she knows Tony's world killed him. Because that truth is too horrifying to live with, she completely detours into Carmela-style denial, forcing herself to believe the "drug dealers did it" lie. We see occasional sparks of her old conscience like her breakdown after the wake and the "Listen to Mr. Mob Boss" line but they fade away.
By the finale, her transformation into a mob apologist is just depressing. She drives Finn away by weaponizing pseudo-intellectual excuses about the "poverty of the Mezzogiorno" to justify mob violence. Then she hooks up with Patrick Parisi and pivots her entire legal career toward defending the exact system she used to despise. She went from the family's brightest hope to a future mob lawyer.
