NEW🚨: A manhunt is underway for two Bangladeshi men following an incident in which a girl was lured to a park and raped.
An investigation began on 1 August 2024 after police received reports that a 13-year-old girl had been raped in Bethnal Green, London.
Showkoth Ahmed, 31, from Bangladesh, is thought to remain in the UK and has connections to Tower Hamlets.
Jahidul Hassan Jaigirdar, 34, also from Bangladesh, has links to Tower Hamlets and is believed to have travelled to Bangladesh.
A £10,000 reward has been offered via the charity Crimestoppers for information.
BREAKING 🚨: Ofcom has identified four methods capable of being “highly effective” for age checks at 16+ ahead of the UK’s under-16 social media ban (due spring 2027).
1. Photo ID matching – passport or driving licence checked against a Live Photo
2. Banking checks – using age data held by a bank (with consent)
3. Digital ID services
4. Facial age estimation – often needs a “challenge age” secondary check because of error margins near 16
These are fewer options than the methods already available for 18+.
Roughly 94% of people aged 16+ hold a passport or driving licence, but some 16- and 17-year-olds do not and may need to obtain photo ID.
Platforms will still need to handle privacy, accessibility, and circumvention risks.
Government is expected to set out the practical rules by the end of 2026, after which Ofcom will consult on guidance.
Some existing adult accounts with reliable age data may be exempt from full re-checks, but many users could still be asked to verify.
