In an earlier infographic, I explained how a data lakehouse works. Perhaps I should have started one step earlier: what exactly does it combine?
The equation is easy to remember, but it can leave the wrong impression about what is actually being combined.

A data warehouse organizes curated data into managed tables for reporting and SQL analysis. A data lake can store information in more flexible formats, including data that has not yet been prepared for a specific purpose.
Consider a manufacturer that needs consistent financial reports but also wants to analyze years of machine logs. These activities require different ways of working with data.
A lakehouse brings warehouse-style data management to flexible lake storage. This allows teams to query managed tables with SQL while using the same storage foundation for other workloads, including AI.
The plus sign in the equation represents a combination of capabilities, not two existing systems physically joined together.
Of course, storing data in a lakehouse does not automatically make it reliable or ready for analysis.
Data still needs preparation and appropriate access controls. The architectural advantage is that different workloads can share a common storage foundation without necessarily creating separate copies of the data.
