American author Ursula K. Le Guin was born on this day in 1929. “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings.”

I'm a big fan of the "Tell Them Theory" Seriously, if your waiter was awesome, tell them. If your friend looks great, let her know. Did someone inspire you? Shoot them a message. Your colleague handled a tough situation like a pro? Tell them that. A small business really impressed you? Go leave them a review. You admire how consistent someone is? Speak up! Does your partner make you feel loved? Make sure they know. Someone's smile brightened your whole day? Tell them! Was someone's courage inspiring? Let them know it. A friend stuck by you through thick and thin? Remind them how much that meant. Being kind is most powerful when you actually say it out loud. Be that person who makes someone feel a little more confident in themselves.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed. This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities. Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery. Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children. Abolish ICE.

Study after study shows that even victims of crime en masse don't support simple vengeance. In order for society to get any better we have to acknowledge how we are failing people. Thus, kill the voice in your head that says that by taking JUST A MOMENT to recognize the ways that Christa Pike was failed by society somehow means that you are spitting on the graves of victims.

But there really is no use in arguing it when you realize that people don't want justice. They want vengeance. Blood lust. People HATE when families plead for science backed interventions. For leniency. For second chances. Or when they go against the death penalty. You only matter as a victim if you are useful to the carceral system and its narratives.

I love the internet.
The people ask, and the people shall receive

Interesting concept, but when has our "justice" system actually "worked" other than as an extension of slavery and Jim Crow?
I wrote my capstone thesis at Berkeley on internet vigilantism. One of the basic takeaways was that these efforts, such as those from Anonymous, really only show up when the law or justice system is allowing egregious harm to come to people. Vigilantism is essentially a marker of our values and does not arise when the justice system actually works.

“Police take a strong interest in rape,” is the kind of thing you can only believe if you have never learned anything about sexual violence or investigated its reality at all—which, of course, most people haven’t.
Replying to @shagisabadword
There has to be more to the story. The police, for example, take a strong interest in rape. What did the police say about this incident?

solidarity doesn't mean pretending everyone's interests already align, it means building collective power actually capable of challenging the conditions that make some people’s security dependent on others’ insecurity

Public safety does not have to mean cops! Go Baltimore!!!
Baltimore, ICYMI: today we announced legislation to establish a new agency which will serve as the third branch of public safety in Baltimore City. The Department of Neighborhood Safety (DNS) will support the progress and hard work of @BaltimoreMONSE, and will create a new, comprehensive alternative response system to ensure that when residents call 911, they receive a response that meets their needs. This is a major step forward in building the future of public safety in our city.

Lots of people with Palestinian flags in their bios claiming that disabled people are useless eaters. Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza have one of the highest rates of disability in the world. Fascism disables. And ableism is a key feature of fascism.

Yes!! Let this be the reason you googled "The Capitol Crawl"!
Physical fitness has NEVER been a key deciding factor in revolution and if you think it is, you don’t understand the real world

This applies to SO MANY THINGS! "The point is not to beat fascists at their own game." We do not want IN to their wars, or their cages for humans. We want our own new (old) systems of care, of mutual support, of accountability, of growth, and of joy. For everyone.
She is right and y’all are mad because you’re ableist and fatphobic just like the fascists you decry
