Plus her Japanese translator would have to be murdered, her Italian translator stabbed and her Norwegian publisher shot.
If Salman Rushdie’s fatwa happened today, how many of these signatories would sign a letter supporting him? Most would be too afraid, many would think he deserved it. I doubt Rooney herself would support him.
The comparison is fatuous and disgraceful.
If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops – when that was still possible – you’d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, “Rooney” and “Rushdie” had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity.

Judge celebrated people on how they treat those who have no power over them. From a @thetimes reader.
I wish my local Green/LibDem council was just issuing statements on housing or bins. Not having to reassure frightened Jewish residents.
“We only ban a march when its opponents will be violent.
We know Jews won’t kick off, so they have to tolerate a celebration of a recent Jewish massacre.”
Violent bullies always win.
What a way to police a city.
Reform didn’t need to go to Nigeria: they could have asked me. The story about Kemi Badenoch & chess comes from my February 2024 @thetimes interview with her. Here is that section of the transcript.
Kemi Badenoch said she was Nigeria's national chess champion at age 7. So we sent a reporter to Nigeria to find out the truth.
She lied.
Here is everything else she has lied about:
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
The actual interview transcript does not support Reform’s description of Badenoch’s claim. She said she won a national chess competition in Nigeria, then explained that “there were only two girls who entered”. She did not claim the overall Nigerian national championship title.

The PM presents fixing social care as painful, courageous, a sticking plaster ripped off. Instead it should be sold as good news for everyone not just the old. My @thetimes column.

"How can commercial surrogacy be illegal in Britain — as it is in France, Germany, Spain and Italy — yet we allow anyone, even sixtysomething single men who we’d never let adopt, travel abroad and buy a child in often dangerous and amoral jurisdictions?"

Six times Janice Turner asked Southwark's deputy leader a yes/no question: should the women-only session at Camberwell baths stay single sex?
The EHRC code took effect on 5 Aug. As she says, some councils are in denial...
