Mid-Journey โ€” Years ago, in graduate school, I studied travel and mobility. But the research was never only theoretical. I was also traveling โ€” watching how movement, borders, and small encounters shape ordinary lives. Those thoughts slowly became small fragments on Twitter. Each one began with the same words: ๆ—…ใฎ้€”ไธŠ โ€” Mid-Journey. There were 365 of them. In 2023 they became a small book. Now I am walking that road again, turning those fragments into poems โ€” one each day until December 31. 365 fragments of a road.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at dusk, in a foreign square, a traveler watched a clown approach a line of chalk between a wooden stage and the street. The line was thin as a promise no one remembered making. His shoes were red and absurdly large. His smile had been painted on before the day began. The crowd leaned forward, ready to laugh at a fall that had not yet happened. But he bent toward the cobblestones, testing each loose one with his toe, then waited, listening, as if the earth might whisper where it could bear his weight. Rain came without warning. The chalk dissolved into pale threads and slipped between the stones. The stage began to resemble the street, the street, a stage. The clown lifted one foot. For a breath, no one could tell whether he was entering or leaving the stage. Then he stepped down. Nothing broke. Only the smallest bell at his ankle gave the silence a silver edge. The crowd stood motionless, searching for the line their laughter had depended on. And the clown walked into the rain, stepping around the puddles as though he knew how easily a sky could break.

#vss365 #ravenous Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at 7:17, Venice still held the day's rain between its stones. A moored boat touched the canal wall, drifted back, and touched it again. Across the water, a woman set a third plate beneath the lamp. She smoothed a napkin with her palm and turned an empty chair a little toward the door. Then a key turned in the lock. A wet coat was tossed over a chair. Laughter rose into the eveningโ€”โ€” the kind no one thinks to remember. The traveler had already eaten, yet stood ravenous for that ordinary miracle: a place made ready before the footsteps came. When the shutters closed, the kitchen's last gold broke into pieces upon the dark canal. And below, the tethered boat went on knocking where there was no door.

Beneath the facts, he added: It felt as if the shore had left him. Neither line was a lie. Neither would give way. All morning, his notebook filled. What happened and what it meant drifted toward opposite shores, and every unfinished story made the water deeper. Beside him, someone peeled an orange and laid half in his palm. He reached for a word to hold the sudden sweetnessโ€”โ€” then let the pen lie still. Years later, the hour was gone, the ferry's name forgotten. But he remembered the orange, and the quiet hand that crossed the distance his pages could not.

#vss365 #elated ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” at 12:17, the night train gives up at a station without a name. Rain threads itself through the platform lights. Water gathers in the cracks. A woman folds her ticket again and again. A boy leans against a sleeping suitcase. Someone sighs as if the dark were heavier than before. Then an old man, quiet as if he had been waiting for this delay all his life, opens a worn leather case and lifts out an accordion. The first notes are small, hardly more than breath. But they find the wet boards, the iron rails, the tired shoulders of strangers, and something in the night begins to loosen. A couple starts to dance under the pale lamps. Their shadows sway on the station wall. Hands begin to clap. Laughter rises, hesitant at first, then bright enough to outrun the rain. Soon the whole platform is elated, as though missing an arrival had opened another kind of time. Even the puddles tremble with music. The traveler joins them, forgetting the hour, the destination, the reason for hurrying through a world that so rarely asks anyone to stay. And when the engine finally stirs with its long metallic ache, the music stops. The dancers stand still. Rain keeps speaking on the roof. For the first time that night, no one seems eager to leave.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” after the rain, the traveler mistook the stillness of the harbor for the weight of an anchor. But when the tide turned, his boat began to drift. There was no iron beneath him. At the end of the pier, a woman hesitated when someone called her second name. Both names were hers, neither entirely. Beside her, a man turned two keys over and over in his palmโ€”โ€” two rooms where he was loved, neither a place he could stay. They spoke of ordinary thingsโ€”โ€” the late ferry, the coming rain, the sweetness of an orange she peeled and passed around. Across the water, harbor lights unfolded in red, amber, and green, their colors touching without becoming one, their boundaries trembling with every passing wave. When the ferry finally came, its wake pulled the boat away. The woman caught his drifting rope and held it until the water stilled. Then she opened her hand. For the length of a single tide, their shadows met upon the water, each keeping its own darkness, each sharing in the light. By morning, the traveler was drifting once again. The faint scent of orange still lingered on his fingers. He had found no shore to which he could fasten his life. But somewhere behind him was a harbor that had held him without holding him still.

#vss365 #cheering ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” before the first tram bell, mist rested on Charles Bridge, softening the stone saints and hiding the far bank. An old violinist stood alone, his melody falling toward the Vltava like a letter without an address. The traveler stopped, certain that no one else was listening. When the last note vanished, cheering rose from a single windowโ€”โ€” a child's voice across the water, bright and brief as a struck match. The old man lifted his hat and bowed as deeply as if a thousand people had risen to their feet. The window closed, and mist reclaimed the bridge. But the traveler walked on thinking of a letter that had found its reader on the far side of the mist.

ใฎ้€”ไธŠ365 ๏ผˆๆ—ฅๆœฌ่ชž็‰ˆใฏไธ‹ใซ๏ผ‰ Mid-Journeyโ€”โ€” on the map, a line followed a river and vanished into a fold. I crossed it near dusk, not knowing which step was the crossing. Other borders lived in doorways: a greeting held back on the tongue, a shop window where the evening light changed color without a sign. Some rose without warningโ€”โ€” in a glance held a heartbeat too long, in the hush between two footstepsโ€”โ€” then faded before they could be named. The border most openly displayed had become a museum. Behind glass, an old warning sign; across the floor, painted arrows showed us the way in and the way out. A wall stood perfectly still, keeping the shape of its former duty. Its shadow fell across the visitors as though it could still divide them. No one had told the wall the performance was over. Before the glass, an old man stood while a child beside him read every word on the sign. Neither spoke. Outside, a woman carrying bread stepped aside for a stranger. For the span of one breath, a narrow space opened between them that neither had meant to make. Then they passed, and the street kept no trace. I took another step, unable to tell whether I had crossed something or merely walked on.
