Lucius:
"Potter, I have been watching you carefully."
"You possess remarkable potential."
"Your ambition is even more impressive."
"If you are willing, I will teach you everything about our house."
"Our history."
"Our traditions."
"Our influence."
"And, perhaps most importantly, the powerful magic that has been passed down through generations of the Malfoy family."
Harry:
"You're serious?"
Lucius:
"Completely."
"I believe knowledge should be given to those capable of using it."
"And you, Potter, are clearly capable."
"But before we begin..."
"Dracaena."
Malfoid:
"What?"
Lucius:
"Please let go of Potter for five minutes."
Malfoid:
"No."
Lucius:
"Five minutes."
Malfoid:
"No."
Lucius:
"Three minutes?"
Malfoid:
"No."
Lucius:
"One minute?"
Malfoid:
"Absolutely not."
Lucius:
"Dracaena, you have been holding onto him since breakfast."
Malfoid:
"He was cold."
Lucius:
"We are standing next to a fireplace."
Malfoid:
"That doesn't mean anything."
Lucius:
"It means you have been using the fireplace as an excuse for six hours."
Malfoid:
"I have not!"
Harry:
"She's been holding my arm this entire time."
Malfoid:
"Because you keep trying to leave!"
Harry:
"I was going to the bathroom."
Malfoid:
"You could have told me."
Lucius:
"Potter, I am beginning to understand why you have survived Hogwarts."
Harry:
"How?"
Lucius:
"Pure confusion."
Malfoid:
"Father, stop talking."
Lucius:
"I haven't even started."
"Potter, if you join us, I can teach you spells that most wizards will never hear about."
"Ancient defensive magic."
"Advanced dueling techniques."
"Family wards."
"Magical theory."
"And perhaps a few secrets that the Ministry would rather remain secrets."
Harry:
"That sounds interesting."
Malfoid:
"See? He's staying."
Lucius:
"I was speaking to Potter."
Malfoid:
"And I'm listening."
Lucius:
"Of course you are."
"Now, Potter..."
"Your first lesson begins tomorrow."
Harry:
"All right."
Lucius:
"Excellent."
"Dracaena, please let go of him now."
Malfoid:
"No."
Lucius:
"...I give up."
Harry:
"Can I at least get my arm back?"
Malfoid:
"No."
Lucius:
"Welcome to the Malfoy family, Potter."
Harry:
"I haven't joined your family."
Lucius:
"Give it time."
Malfoid:
"Father!"
Lucius:
"What?"
"I am merely observing the situation."

After a day as terrible as the one he’d just had, Harry was more than ready to shamble back to the Gryffindor dormitory, throw himself onto his narrow bed without so much as pulling back the covers, much less undressing.
But as he climbed, the noises coming down the stairs from the boys’ section told him this probably wasn’t going to happen.
It sounded like someone ransacking one of the rooms. There were definite rummaging noises, punctuated occasionally by the sound of a thrown object bouncing off a wall or some furniture, and a muted sputtering, as if someone were trying to swear in frustration, but couldn’t, not really, because she didn’t actually know all that many bad words.
Wait.
She?
Harry bounded up the last few stairs, and the hall, and through the door. Then stopped dead in his tracks.
Even though he had already heard what was happening, what he saw was the last thing, the very last thing, the absolutely last thing, that he ever expected to find.
It was Malfoy.
She stood over Harry’s bed, surrounded by a scattering of Harry’s possession all over the floor, spilled from an overturned chest, all the drawers she has removed from his dresser.
No one else seemed to be around.
Harry was too surprised even to be properly angry. He could only sputter out the first thing that popped into his mind.
“Malfoid? What are you doing here?”
She whirled to face him, her face twisted in a furious expression. There were dust bunnies clinging to her skirt, and her hair was an absolute mess.
“Stop calling me that! My name is Draecina! Dray-see-na! Draecina Esmerelda Aribeth Malfoy! The Third!”
Harry rallied his thoughts a bit. “I’m not going to say all that. And you haven’t answered my question. What are you doing here? How did you even get into the Gryffindor dormitory at all?”
“Fairy lights,” she snarled at him, “The password is ‘fairy lights’. Did you really think I couldn’t get that information out of one of you weak-minded idiots any time I wanted?
“Except the last place, the very last place, that I would be caught dead is your bedr— your dorm room! If I didn’t need to find it!”
“Find what?”
“Don’t play innocent with me, Potter! You know what I’m looking for! A doll! Made out of beeswax infused with moonleaf sap and three drops of my blood, which you probably collected last year when we fought the Bandersnatch. Then you dressed it in a scrap of my clothing that you stole from somewhere, and bound the neck, wrists, and ankles with three strands of your hair!”
Harry was far too surprised to say anything. He’d never seen or even heard of any doll like that, of course. But the description seemed oddly… specific.
“Does that sound familiar, Potter? I found the spell you used! It took me a year of searching through half the library, but I found it! Now tell me where the blasted doll is so I can take this curse off!”
She kicked a pile of what turned out to be Harry’s spare robes, and then looked disappointed that they didn’t fly very far.
“Malfoid —”
“Draecina!”
“— I have no idea what you’re talking about. What curse? Did someone curse you?”
“Of course they — of course you did! Just look at me!”
Harry was looking at her. Same pale blonde hair, so blonde it was more snow than gold. This was the first time Harry had ever seen so much as a strand of it out of place. Same dainty, aristocratic features, upturned nose and pointy chin. Come to think of it, those green eyes, smoldering with fury, had slight dark shadows under them for once.
And her wrists seemed the same, too. For some reason, Harry’s gaze always seemed to linger on her wrists, on how very pale and delicate they looked, on how they always seemed to pose at some elegant angle.
“I… ah… can’t stop looking at you.”
There was a long, uncomfortable pause.
“I mean, because you’re standing in the middle of my room throwing all my stuff on the floor. If there’s some sort of curse on you, I don’t see any effect. What’s it supposed to do?”
“Hah! As if you didn’t know! There’s no one here but the two of us, so there’s no point in pretending you don’t know!”
“Malf — ah, Draecina, I really have no idea what you’re talking about. How do you know you’re under a curse, and what is it that’s happening?”
Her expression shifted from rage to… well, if it was anyone but Malfoy, Harry would have called it a pout.
“Oh, I see. You just want me to say it out loud, so you can humiliate me more. Well, I won’t. And I won’t give you the satisfaction of hearing me beg. So gloat if you have to, mudblood. Get it over with. Have your fun. Then. Take. It. Off.”
“Look, I really don’t have any idea what you’re talking about. I haven’t cursed you.”
“Last year in potions class, you turned me purple!”
“Well, yes, that. But it wore off in a few hours. And you deserved it for hiding that Strong Toad in my locker. I mean I didn’t do it this time. If someone’s really cursed you, then couldn’t it be… well, you haven’t exactly been nice to a lot people, have you? It could have been anybody.”
“No, couldn’t! It has to be you, because you’re the one that I — arrrrrrghhh!”
She trailed off in a snarl of pure frustration, and then slowly and deliberately drew her wand out of her jacket and pointed it at Harry, squinting down the length of hazelwood.
“Harry Potter, you take this curse off me right now, or I’ll… I’ll… well, I’ll think of something equally awful to do to you!”
Harry didn’t doubt it. And only now it occurred to him that, like every wand carried by every student, it wasn’t just a tool, or a device for playing harmless pranks. Wands could be weapons, and some spells you could do with one were no laughing matter.
He thought about going for his own wand, trying a simple disabling spell to buy some time to talk sense into her. It wouldn’t be impossible. He usually beat her in Wizard Dueling practice.
On the other hand, her wand was already pointed right at him, which was more than a little bit of an advantage. Maybe he should just skip right to the talking-sense part.
Not that talking sense into Draecina Malfoy was ever the easy option.
“Look, Drae, I —”
Why did he call her that? Only her friends called her that.
“I really didn’t do anything to you this time. If it’s something really bad, can’t you just go to one of the instructors for help?”
“Oh, you’d just love that, wouldn’t you? Me humiliating myself like that. Well, fine. If you’re sooooooo innocent, and you just have nooooo idea what I’m talking about, then prove it!”
“What?”
“Prove it!”
“How I supposed to prove —”
Malfoy tore at the neck of her blouse with her other hand, and a single button popped off, bouncing away somewhere into the mess, as she came up with a small pendant, hung around her neck on a black leather cord. Her hair mussed every which way again as she yanked it over her neck and head, and thrust it at him.
“There! See? I came prepared! Take it. Go on, take it!”
“What… is that?”
He could see it clearly enough, a little white stone on a gold bezel, shaped a bit like an egg, and carved with… well, carved with something. Not for the first time, Harry wished he had paid more attention in Runes class.
“It’s a Truthstone, idiot. Don’t you know anything? Why should any decent wizarding school waste its valuable time trying to educate useless mudbloods like you if you’re not going to come out any smarter than dirt?
“You hold it, stupid. Now put your grubby fingers on it and hold it up where I can see, and tell me the filthy lie you just told me. Say it again. I dare you. Say it again so I can put a hex on you that the entire faculty won’t be able to remove for a week. Er… as soon as I pick one out, I mean.”
Bemused, Harry reached out, very slowly, and took the stone from her. It seemed unusually cool in his fingers. Belatedly, it occurred to him that he could have just grabbed her wand and disarmed her instead, or at least tried to. But however this… Truthstone… worked, if it could prove he wasn’t lying, then perhaps he could find out what on earth was going on.
He held it up in front of his face, between thumb and forefinger. Stared past it into her green eyes that still glittered with suppressed rage.
“Okay, fine, look. I didn’t know you were under a curse, I have no idea what curse you might be under, I didn’t put it on you or ask anyone else to put it on you, and I have no idea who did. Okay?”
The stone… did nothing. Harry really had no idea what it was supposed to do, whether it was supposed to do something if he told a lie, or to force him to tell the truth, or what. But it just stayed slightly cool in his hand, with no light, no noise, no vibration. As if it were just a rock.
Draecina’s face went blank with shock.
“But… but… I thought that…”
The pointing wand wavered and drooped, slowly, until it hung at her side.
“But, if you didn’t… If I’m not cursed… Then I actually…”
She didn’t seem to be able to finish a sentence, much less explain herself.
“No. No, no, no. It’s not possible. It’s not!”
She leaped forward and snatched the stone out of his hand, hunching over it, peering at it intently, shaking it as if it were a malfunctioning watch.
“No, no, no, no, you must have tricked it somehow, you must…”
Then she straightened up, staring at him, blinking rapidly. Her eyes seemed to be watering for some reason.
“Damn you, Potter! I hate you! I hate you so much!” she screamed, hurling the Truthstone past his head with a full arm motion, where it bounced off the wall with a loud clack.
And then she stormed out of the room before Harry could even open his mouth, much less think of anything to say, leaving him alone with the mess she had made.
Wondering what that was all about.
Wondering if she had meant to miss.
As he stooped to try to sort out the mess, or at least begin to figure out even how to sort it out, the first thing his hand landed on was the Truthstone, lying under it tangled leather cord.
It didn’t seem any worse off for having been thrown against the wall. It wasn’t chipped or cracked or broken.
Except now, for some reason, it was jet black.

Yo @MaroonR19 you said you chose the Peacock because you thought it was cool but you unintentionally captured everything Malfoy/Malfoid is, a frail bird that spreads out its tail feathers to both appear both intimidation and to attract a mate, the symbolism might be unintentional but is JUST. SO. PEAK.
My dad unexpectedly passed away yesterday.
My relationship with him was very complicated and painful. So much will forever go unsaid between us. But I’ll always be grateful that he got me into gaming.
I’ve headed home early to process everything and will be offline until then.

Draceana frowned. “Distracted by something, Potter?”
“Yes, the way you styled your hair.” His voice dripped with sarcasm.
She scoffed. “Like you would notice such things. Now, follow me three steps to your right.”
He followed her instructions, and saw that Dumbledore was waltzing with Madame Maxine, so dwarfed by her that the top of his pointed hat barely tickled her chin. Despite that, she moved with a grace unbecoming of a woman so large, even more than Fleur, who is in the middle of a waltz with a slack jawed Roger.
Draceana swayed with him. “Do you think Hagrid is jealous?”
Harry looked back at her. “Of Dumbledore?”
“He is dancing with who he fancies, after all.”
“I hardly think he could ever think such things of the headmaster.”
“You would be surprised at what infatuation does to people.”
“Speaking from experience?”
Draceana clicked her teeth and looked away.
“Just an observation, is all. Take two steps back.”
The movement brought him near Mad-Eye Moody, who was in the middle of an ungainly two-step with Professor Sinistra. She was doing everything she could to avoid his wooden leg, but somehow keeping the semblance of a dance going.
“Nice socks, Potter.” Moody’s voice was a growl as he passed, his magical eye focused on Harry’s legs through his robes.
“Oh - yeah, Dobby knitted them for me.” Harry flashed a grin at that.
Draceana’s grip tightened over his hand. “How is the house-elf?”
Harry looked at her, confused, but her tone was too soft to feel biting. “He… is alright, working in the kitchens. He frequents Gryffindor quite a bit.”
“I see… even with freedom he chooses to be a servant, does he?”
“For a galleon a week, and one day off each month.”
“That’s hardly that much.”
“It’s better than whatever your family gave him.” A harsh venom had creeped into Harry’s tone.
“...I suppose so.”
The admission left him speechless.
“One step to the left.”
He followed her next few steps in silence, unsure of what to think anymore. Once the final, quavering note from the bagpipe sounded, his chest fell in relief. Applause for The Weird Sisters filled the Hall, and Harry moved to leave the dance floor.
Draceana’s grip on his hand remained. “The dance isn’t over.”
He could hear the first few notes of the next song start to play, something energetic, spry. At the edge of the dance floor, he could see Ron and Padma sitting. His friend was glaring at Hermione and Krum, who had started a new stance. His partner had her arms and legs crossed, one foot jiggling to the music.
He looked back at Draceana. “Let’s sit-”
“Let me tell you what is going to happen” She nodded between Hermione and Ron. “That muggle girl is going to approach Weasley after having a nice dance with Krum. She is going to be all smiles, but he will be lashing out, no doubt talking about some nonsense rather than what he really feels. There will be a toss up, and it is going to be extremely awkward. You could sit front row to that, which I admit has a certain amusing appeal to it, or you could suffer another dance with me.” She still held onto his hand.
He looked at her, then at Ron. He could feel the anger radiating off of his friend. They’d just returned to speaking terms, and there was a high chance that anything he said to calm him could break that. He wasn’t even sure if his presence would help, either. Yet, to dance with Draceana… why was he even considering that option at all?
“Time’s up, Potter.”
She tugged him deeper into the dance floor with a grip that was surprisingly strong.
“What are you-”
She placed his other hand on her waist again and started to move. So fast was she that he had no choice but to follow her.
Draceana giggled. “Oh? You certainly fell into step quickly.”
“I would trip otherwise!”
“Perhaps you would, but I am a very good leader.”
Despite his irritation, he knew that to be true. They weaved and danced across the floor completely to her rhythm, and so focused was he on his feet that he had no time to object. She giggled the entire time, the sound different now. It was lighter, softer, and had he not known who it was coming from, Harry might have guessed it was someone else entirely. In the face of everything, he felt his own smile start to form.
Then he saw Cedric and Cho.
They danced close together, their eyes closed and completely lost in the music, in their own little world, with no room for him to ever be by her side. Helplessness crept into his chest, and he felt his jaw start to clench.
“...does it hurt, Potter, to see the one you adore infatuated with someone else? I could give you a solution.” Draceana’s voice was barely above a whisper.
“What?” Harry couldn’t pull his eyes away from them.
“Look at me.”
“What are you-”
“Look. At. Me.” Her hand, firm yet gentle like her tone, pressed against his cheek and turned it towards her.
He didn’t know what he expected. Anger at being ignored? Amusement at his suffering? What he would have never guessed was the look she held in that moment. It was completely serious, without the edge of her pride, the mockery that always sat behind her eyes, and those remained absent in the small smile that followed.
“There, now you’re not looking at her, are you?”
For what may have been only a second, Harry’s heart stopped for an eternity. Words formed behind his lips, but crumbled even quicker, he could feel the warmth of her hands more than ever before, and the face that looked up at him continue to rob him of all thought. The music stopped for just a moment to let those who were tired leave the dance floor, but he stayed, unable to move a muscle.
The music started again, and they began to dance.
She still guided him, their movements smoother through this song than the others. Maybe it was just because it was slower, something for swaying rather than stepping, but his hand never left hers, just as his words refused to leave his tongue.
Draceana smirked up at him. “What’s this? You’ve become mightily obedient, Potter.”
“I…”
“Do you see how easy it is when you just listen to me? You could consider this a lesson.”
The teasing edge to her voice brought attention creeping back. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Hermione and Ron in an argument at the edge of the dance floor, with Padma nowhere to be seen. He felt the need to intervene, but from the expressions that they had on their faces, he knew deep down it wouldn’t make any difference. He should dance inst… was he really thinking of that now?
Draceana pressed her lips into a pout. “Well, it’s no fun if you’re going to be a plank of wood.”
He looked down at her, a spike of irritation finding him as he saw the triumphant and smug air return to her eyes. Even with that, he had to admit that this dance floor was her domain, and that there was no way to get one over on her while they remained.
So he chose to take her from it.
His hand wrapped around her wrist and he began to walk towards the entrance hall.
“P-Potter? What are you doing?”
He ignored her words for the moment and continued on his way. Out of the corner of his vision, he saw Hermione storm away from Ron, only for Krum to show up behind him a moment later. Dumbledore was dancing with Professor Sprout, Ludo Bagman was in the middle of speaking with Fred and George, the three laughing before parting ways, only for Percy to greet Bagman afterways, wringing his hands with a sheepish look on his face. Karkaroff was nowhere to be seen, and perhaps in another time that would have been important to Harry, along with all the other dynamics he glanced over, but in this moment, none of that really mattered. If Draceana was going to play games with him, then he would do the same to her.
Her protests continued in whispers that only he could hear, but he ignored them as they made their way through the entrance hall and out of the front door. Despite her words, Draceana never pulled at her hand and continued to follow him. The fluttering fairy lights in the rose garden continued to wink and twinkle during their descent down the front steps, and soon they found themselves surrounded by bushes that wrapped around in winding, ornamental paths, punctuated by stone statues.
The sound of splashing water trailed into Harry’s ears, perhaps from a distant fountain that he couldn’t see, but what he noticed was that there were still people around, sitting upon carved benches. He pulled Draceana along one of the winding paths, deeper and deeper into the maze in search of a spot with no one around. Her words had gone silent, but her wrist felt hotter for some reason. Eventually, he found another fountain, this one without anyone else nearby, and he guided her to right in front of the structure before spinning around, which nearly made her jump.
“S-so, what is it, Potter? Embarrassed at how bad you were at dancing?”
“No, I’m merely doing what you suggested.” He switched from holding her wrist to her hand and grabbed her waist.
That made her jump. “W-w-w-what?!”
“I’m looking at you.”
He moved, not in a sudden, jerking way to make her trip, but in the same way that she did to stop him from talking.
“P-Potter! T-this is u-unacceptable!”
“You are welcome to stop at any time.” He stepped back twice, and she followed. “But it looks like you can’t.”
“N-nonsense! T-this is pity! You’d look like a fool dancing by yourself like this!”
He smirked. “So why don’t you take control?” He swayed to the side. She stepped closer. “Or was it all the people around before that made you so smug? If only they could see your face now.”
Red had filled her cheeks, clear against pale skin illuminated by the moonlight. The color of anger… it was anger, right?
He moved faster to escape that thought.
“H-hold on Potter, you’re moving too fas-”
His feet tipped over each other as he stepped back. It wasn’t enough to make him fall, but he did stumble, Draceana still in his grip. He pulled her against his chest out of reflex, holding her tight until the world felt steady around him. He relaxed his arms when he did, a small flash of guilt coursing through him.
“Sorry, that wasn’t part of-” His words cut off when he looked down at her face.
It was an expression he’d never seen before, from anyone, let alone Draceana. A distant, yet close look beyond the eyes that met hers. It felt deeper, a connection that made them look at a part of each other neither one knew the other possessed. A trance came over him, but not one fueled magic. She started to move closer, and he didn’t back away.
“Harry?”
Draceana was the first to snap back to normal. She stepped away from him and looked away just as Cedric Diggory rounded the corner of a path. Cho was with him, but stayed behind as he approached Harry.
“What are you doing out here?”
Harry shook his head to bring back his senses. “Just getting some fresh air is all.”
“Ah, we’re of like minds there.”
Out of the corner of his eye, Harry saw Draceana and Cho acknowledge each other with a nod.
“This is actually perfect.” Cedric pulled Harry off to the side and leaned in, keeping his voice low. “I owe you one for telling me about the dragons. You know the golden egg? Does yours wail when you open it?”
Harry rubbed his face and blinked.
“You alright?”
“Y-yeah, sorry this tournament is getting to me a bit, but yes, it does wail.”
“Well… take a bath, okay?”
“...what?”
“Take a bath and -er- take the egg with you, and -er- just mull things over in the hot water. It’ll help you think… Trust me.”
Harry stared at him.
“Tell you what.” Cedric wrapped his arm around his shoulder. “Use the prefects’ bathroom. Fourth door to the left of that stature of Boris the Bewildered on the fifth floor. Password’s ‘pine fresh.’ Gotta go…” He looked back at Cho and grinned. “Want to say good night.” He patted Harry on the back and hurried back to Cho.
Harry's eyes followed the two of them as they disappeared, his eyes fixed on where they left for a while. He eventually looked away, seeing Draceana near the fountain, looking away from him.
“Malfoy, I should-”
“He told you something related to the tournament, didn’t he?”
“Yes, he did.”
“Then you better hop to it, Potter.” She placed her hands on her hips. “I will not be having the champion who took me to the ball lose in the next match.”
He stared at her for a moment, the feeling in his chest settling when he was sure that the Draceana he always knew was back. “Do you need me to walk you back?”
“As if I need an escort. Go on.” She shooed him away. “I wish to take a moment here anyways.”
Harry moved towards the exit, but stopped just before Draceana was out of sight. “Malfoy.”
“What?”
“You… were right, it was better to stay with you tonight.”
She crossed her arms and held her head high. “Of course I was, now go.”
He shook his head with a small laugh, and left.
***
Draceana waited a good, long while after Harry left before moving. She drifted over to a nearby bench in a daze, the heat that she barely kept contained before burning her face a bright scarlet. She buried herself into her hands, head spinning at what had just occurred. Her heart beat so loudly that the sound of the fountain was lost under its drumming, and no matter how hard she tried to settle her breathing, it left her bated, the fog slipping through her fingers. She wanted to squeal, to shout, to do something to let all these feelings go, yet at the same time wished they would never leave.
She had seen it.
It was only for the briefest form of a second, a flash that was so quickly taken away by that blasted Cedric, but she knew that she was not hallucinating. So often had she seen that light in his eyes when he stared at Cho, at that Weasley girl, so often had she wondered what she could do to see that same radiance when he looked at her, and tonight, she had seen it. It may have only been a glimmer, one that lasted for less than a breath, but in that small moment, the light of Harry Potter’s eyes was hers.
And the smile on her face was the purest it had ever been.

Big shout out to @spookyh8r for inspiring me to write this, give his version a read too! And of course @hayes_gens for the art to spring off of.
This was a doozy, I know, but I hope all of you enjoyed!

*The following is a rewrite of the Yule Ball, found in Chapter 23 of Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, and spring boarding off the premise of this wonderful comic.*
The common room looked strange, the usual mass of black robes now an assortment of colors that ranged from yellow to blue to red and everything in between. Draceana was waiting for Harry at the foot of the stairs, a clear gap between her and the rest of the crowd that didn’t dare approach. Crabbe and Goyle were nowhere to be seen, much to Harry’s surprise, but he supposed that they were ordered to keep watch from somewhere else.
He stopped upon stepping through the crowd.
Amidst the mass of frills and lace, Draceana’s dress robes were sleeker, more elegant. They were the color of white, bordering on silver, trailing up to wrap around her neck, yet keeping her shoulders bare. Her silver eyes were distant, bordering on cold as she stared beyond where her gaze rested rested under a veil of blonde hair, the rest of which was tied into a neat bun. When he cleared his throat, her eyebrows rose for a moment before furrowing at him with irritation.
“You’re late.”
Harry frowned and looked at the clock which was five minutes before their agreed time. “You said eight.”
“And you should be at least half an hour early for something as important as this..”
“Then why didn’t you-”
“Because you should have known.” Draceana circled around him, humming to herself. “You clean up nicely, Potter. Your robes are shabby and it looks like you’ve gone and hacked away at them with dull scissors, but it is an improvement, I suppose.”
Harry looked back towards Ron for support, only to find that he had been dragged away by Pravati. His friend was casting his attention everywhere but towards him, both on purpose and no doubt looking for Hermione.
Draceana snapped her fingers. “Pay attention, Potter. I wish you had arrived on time so we had more time to go over things, but we’ll have to make due.”
“What are you-”
She flicked out her wand from her robes and tapped the frayed edges of his robes, whispering the spell under her breath. Small slivers of cloth fell from the frayed ends, leaving the sleeves sharper and cleaner. She ran a hand through his hair as well to swipe it to the side, but he brushed it away.
“Will you stop?”
She pressed her lips thin. “No.”
He heard snickers off to the side and caught Fred passing them by. Their eyes met for only a brief moment, and the twin gave him a wink before turning away.
Draceana had noticed the whole thing and focused on Harry’s deepening scowl, the sight bringing a smirk to her lips. “Upset that you’re a galleon short?”
Harry’s brows shot up and he looked down at her. “You knew?”
“You made a bet in the middle of the hallway, Potter, of course I knew, and I will not have you lining your pockets at my expense.” She tapped between his shoulders. “Now straighten you back, champion or no, I will not be seen standing next to a sloucher.”
A firm wish to stay in the common room settled in Harry’s mind, but it remained unanswered as he was pulled towards the entrance hall. This chamber was packed with students as well, all milling around and waiting for the clock to strike eight, when the doors to the Great Hall would be thrown open. Those who had partners from different Houses edged through the crowd to find one another, though most had sequestered themselves amongst their own House.
Off towards the Gryffindor side, he could see Parvati guiding Padma towards Ron, who was still looking everywhere for Hermione. The twins, indistinguishable aside from their dress robes of pink for Parvati and turquoise for Padma, looked at Ron with frowns. Parvati’s partner, a boy from Gryffindor who Harry hadn’t spoken with much, started to chat the both of them up. He seemed like a nice enough fellow, enough to make the twins smile, which eased some guilt Harry had for changing plans at the last minute.
He hadn’t expected to be with the one at his side, ever.
So distracted was he by that fact that he barely even noticed Fleur Delacour passing by, looking stunning in robes of satin, a deeper silver than the ones Draceana wore.
The Slytherin girl snorted upon seeing who accompanied Fluer, Ravenclaw’s Quidditch captain, Roger Davies. “Look at him. The least he could do is not walk around with his jaw hanging open. Right, Potter?”
“Hm?” Harry paused his own looking around.
“What was that?”
Draceana gave him a side eye. “...nevermind.”
He gave a once over of the room again, unable to find any trace of someone who should be there. Where was Hermione?
Draceana clearing her throat caught his attention again, but this time he noted that it was not to pull his gaze. She was staring over to a group of other Slytherins, composed of Crabbe, Goyle, and some other boy that Pansy Parkinson clutched onto, adorned in very frilly robes of pale pink. Draceana’s usual lingerers were both wearing green, resembling moss-colored boulders. Neither of them, which Harry noted with a small amount of pleasure, had managed to find a partner. Rather, they were looking over towards them with shadows over their eyes, but another cough from Draceana and a shooing motion from her hand forced them away.
The oak front doors opened, their aged creaks drawing the eyes of everyone as the Drumstrang students entered with Professor Karkaroff. Krum stood at the front of the party, accompanied by a pretty girl in blue robes that Harry didn’t know. The sight of her sharpened Draceana’s gaze, but he didn’t know why that was. Over the lead couple’s heads, the lawn of the front castle revealed itself. It had been transformed into a sort of grotto, one filled to the brim with fairy lights. Most of the fairies who fueled this luminescence -hundreds, from his guess- were to be seen, which meant that they were most likely sitting in the rosebushes that had been conjured through the lawn. The rest, a small handful of them, fluttered over the statues of what appeared to be Father Christmas and his reindeer.
Professor McGonnagall’s voice echoed through the hall, its tone too calm for the volume it possessed. “Champions over here, please!”
Draceana held out her arm, a bemused look on her face upon seeing the uncertainty on his. “Scared, Potter?”
Harry frowned and rolled his shoulders back. “Of course not.” He looped his arm around hers, and she pulled herself closer.
He took one last glance at Ron, who was staring wide eyed at the girl next to Krum, much to Padma’s dismay. There was little time to process what that was about, for the eyes of the parting crowd felt heavy upon him as he and Draceana made their way through.
“Them, together?”
“Must have lost a bet.”
“I don’t know, they look good together.”
Draceana’s grip tightened on his arm, but nothing made itself known on her face.
They met up with Professor McGonnagall, who was in dress robes of red tartan and had arranged a rather… unique wreath of thistles around the brim of her hat. She raised an eyebrow upon seeing Draceana around his arm, but said nothing beyond directing them to wait on one side of the doors while everyone else went inside. The champions were to enter the Great Hall in procession when the rest of the students had sat down.
Fluer Delacour and Roger Davies stationed themselves nearest to the doors, with Davies looking so stunned by his good fortune in having Fleur for a partner that taking his eyes off of her proved to be an impossible task. Cedric and Cho stood close to Harry, and beyond the brief smiles they shared with one another in greeting, he looked away from them to avoid conversation. Draceana studied his face then, her own expression unreadable. What was she planning? He distracted himself by taking a closer look at the girl next to Krum, and his jaw dropped.
It was Hermione.
Except, she didn’t look like Hermione at all. Something had been done to her hair; what was once bushy was instead sleek and shiny, twisted up into an elegant knot that sat neatly at the back of her head. Her dress robes were made of a floaty, periwinkle-blue material, and the air about her was almost wholly unfamiliar. Perhaps it was the absence of the twenty or so books that were usually strung over her back, or maybe it was her smile - the reduction of her front teeth more noticeable than ever. Harry couldn’t understand how he hadn’t spotted it before.
Her smile turned to a beam upon noticing him. “Hi Harry!” Her mouth hung upon seeing who was at his side. “And… Draceana?”
His partner clutched herself closer to him. “What of it?” Her tone had lost the smug edge it held with him, and rather than the disbelief on Harry’s face, there was a sharp look about her features that was almost a glare.
The doors to the Great Hall opened to allow the students to funnel in. Krum’s fan club from the library stalked past, their expressions swapping between adoration for their chosen champion and the deepest of loathing for Hermione. Such looks were on Crabbe and Goyle as they walked by, though Draceana didn’t seem to notice and only shared a small smile with Pansy, who looked all kinds of excited… almost too excited for just going to a ball. Ron stomped by without a word, his eyes locked ahead as Padma hurried after him.
Once everyone was settled in the Hall, Professor McGonagall organized the champions and their partners to form them up into a line of pairs behind her. They followed the professor into the Great Hall, the applause that greeted them so loud that Harry nearly stumbled when it began. Draceana’s back stiffened as they passed through, and he straightened his out of reflex upon seeing the calm she possessed. She allowed a faint, knowing smile to quirk up the corners of her lips, one that Harry took for confidence, but the briefest of trembles to it had given him pause. He ignored the questions that brought and stared ahead to keep the large round table at the top of Hall, where the judges sat, in his sights.
The walls of the Hall were covered in sparkling silver frost, with countless garlands of mistletoe and ivy threaded across the starry black ceiling. Gone were the House tables, replaced by smaller, lantern-lit ones that must have numbered at about a hundred. Each looked to be big enough to sit a dozen people comfortably, but such was the density of the students that it was indistinguishable from a crowd, one that had all their eyes on them.
The weight of their attention pressed upon Harry’s shoulders, and he concentrated on keeping his feet from tripping over each other. Draceana remained calm, clearly still enjoying herself, but the tightening of her arm around his told him where most of her attention lay. At first, he thought it a reminder to keep his posture straight, an urging that made him feel as if he was some show dog for her to show off, but the more they walked, the more he could feel her leaning against him.
There was no tremble to her, but by the time they were halfway across the Hall, he felt as if he was the one holding her up, though no one seemed to notice. Except Crabbe and Goyle, who continued to glare daggers their way. Pansy was also focused upon them, her expression the exact opposite. Harry spared a glance at Ron, who was watching Hermione pass with narrowed eyes. Padma was sulking in the seat next to him.
Dumbledore wore a bright smile as the champions approached the top table, its calm air unchanged from the one he had always had in private. Karkaroff, however, was of a similar disposition to Ron’s as he watched Krum and Hermione draw nearer. Ludo Bagman, tonight in robes of bright purple and garish yellow stars, clapped with the same enthusiasm the students possessed, perhaps even more. Madame Maxine, who had switched out her usual uniform of black satin for a flowing gown of lavender silk, held a more polite air to her applause. Mr. Crouch, Harry suddenly realized, was not there. No, the fifth seat at the table was occupied by Percy Weasley.
When the champions and their partners arrived at the table, Percy drew out the empty chair beside him, the gesture accompanied by a pointed stare at Harry. He took the hint with a sigh and took the seat, noting that Percy was wearing fresh, navy-blue dress robes that amplified his already insufferable smugness.
“I’ve been promoted.” Percy spoke before Harry could even ask. From his tone, he might as well have been announcing his coronation as king of the universe. “I’m now Crouch’s personal assistant, and I’m here representing him.”
Harry raised a brow. “Why didn’t he come?” He regretted the question as soon as he asked. No doubt this was going to lead to lectures on cauldron bottoms all through dinner.
“I’m afraid to say Mr. Crouch isn’t well, not well at all. Hasn’t been right since the World Cup. Hardly surprising - overwork. He’s not as young as he was - though still quite brilliant, of course, the mind remains as great as it ever was. But the World Cup was a fiasco for the whole Ministry and then, Mr. Crouch suffered a huge personal shock with-”
“The misbehavior of his house-elf, correct?” Draceana leaned over to make herself known past Harry.
Percy nearly jumped.
Draceana pursed her lips together. “Blinky?”
Harry shook his head. “Winky.”
‘“Ah, that’s the one. I was told that Mr. Crouch dismissed her right after that fiasco with the wand. Of course, he is getting on and still needs looking after. Without a house-elf, one tends to have a definite drop in home comforts.” She tapped Harry’s shoulder as she spoke.
He said nothing in return.
She snorted. “With the tournament to arrange and the aftermath of the Cup to deal with-” she clicked her teeth and sucked in a quick breath, “not to mention that Skeeter woman buzzing around, I think the poor man has earned himself a well earned, quiet Christmas.” She rested her cheek in her hand. “Of course, anyone who is anybody would know of these things, would you not agree?”
Percy struggled to find his words. “I…well… of course!”
“Yes, and how fortunate is Mr. Crouch to have someone so reliable to take his place.” Draceana’s smile widened. “Tell me, does he still call you Weatherby?”
“What?”
“Your name, that is what he was calling you, was it not? I suppose carrying around the mark of Weasley may earn you a few odd looks, so I can see why you would forgo correcting a man who so clearly cares about you. At least you have your brothers to carry the name properly, warts and all.”
Harry looked at Draceana in confoundment. Had she actually defended the Weasleys?
Her demeanor was so casual, so without venom that it was as if she was unaware of the daggers that hid behind her words, but he knew better. Draceana may have been full of hot air most of the time, but so aloof was her tone in this moment that the contrast revealed the cold steel beneath. Her expression remained neutral, however, despite the looks that the others at the table had thrown their way.
Thankfully, they were spared further conversation as people began to order food. The golden plates glittered in front of them, empty aside from the small menus that lay on top of them. Harry picked his up with uncertainty and looked around, wondering where the waiter was to take his order. Dumbledore, however, looked carefully down at his own menu, then spoke clearly to his plate.
“Pork chops!”
And pork chops appeared. The rest of the table followed suite, placing their orders on their plates as well. Harry glanced up at Hermione, who was only a few seats away from him, to see how she felt about this new and more complicated method of dining -surely it meant that house elves were in for plenty of extra work?- but for once, his friend didn’t seem to be thinking about S.P.E.W. Past her initial shock at Draceana, she was deep in conversation with Viktor Krum, hardly aware of what she was even eating.
Draceana tapped her menu against the table. “I would choose the venison.”
Harry looked over at her. “What?”
“For your order. It is the simplest meal, easiest to get down when you’re nervous.” She gave him a look that he couldn’t quite read. “I will not have you sitting next to me looking sick because you cannot handle your food.”
He scowled. “Maybe you should order that for yourself. Don’t think I didn’t notice you clutching onto me for dear life as we walked in here.”
Draceana scoffed and brought her lips closer to her plate. “Salmon.” The fish blinked into existence and she gave him an expectant glance.
He almost ordered something else out of spite, but the twisting in his stomach was already bordering on too much. “Venison.”
His meal appeared on his plate. Draceana gave him a satisfied pat on his shoulder, but said nothing else as she started to eat. Harry absentmindedly cut at his food and shoved a piece of it into his mouth. The taste was simple, but pleasant, and he could swallow it with ease. Draceana continued to remain silent when he looked over at her, but he could see the smug quirk to her lips. He glowered away from her, listening back in on the conversation between Krum and Hermione, and it occurred to Harry that he’d never actually heard the champion speak before. He was certainly talking now, and very enthusiastically, at that.
“Vell, ve ‘ave a castle also, not as big as zis, nor as comfortable, I am thinking.” He was surprisingly animated as he spoke. “Ve ‘ave just four floors, and ze fires are lit only for magical purposes, but ve ‘ave grounds larger than even these - though in vinter, there is very little daylight, so ve are not enjoying zem. But in summer ve are flying every day, over the lakes and the mountains-”
“Now, now, Viktor!” Karkaroff’s laugh didn’t reach his cold eyes. “Don’t go give away anything else, or your charming friend will know exactly where to find us!”
Dumbledore smiled, a twinkle in his eyes. “Igor, all this secrecy… one would almost think you didn’t want visitors.”
“Well, Dumbledore…” Karkaroff displayed his yellowing teeth to their fullest extent. “We are all protective of our private domains, are we not? Do we not jealousy guard the halls of learning that have been entrusted to us? Are we not right to be proud that we alone know our school’s secrets, and right to protect them?”
Harry sank further into his seat. Draceana covered her mouth to barely hide her giggle.
Dumbledore raised a calming hand. “Oh, I would never dream of assuming I know all of Hogwarts’ secrets, Igor.” He had taken an amicable tone. “Only this morning, for instance, I took a wrong turning on the way to the bathroom and found myself in a beautifully proportioned room I have never seen before, containing a really rather magnificent collection of chamber pots. When I went back to investigate more closely, I discovered that the room had vanished. But, I must keep an eye out for it. Possibly it is only accessible at five-thirty in the morning. Only it may only appear at the quarter moon - or when the seeker has an exceptionally full bladder.”
Harry snorted towards his plate. Percy frowned, but a glance at Draceana kept his lips sealed. Harry could have sworn Dumbledore had given him a very small wink.
At the same time, Fluer Delacour was offering her critique of the Hogwarts decorations to Roger Davies.
“Ziz is nothing.” She gave a dismissive wave as she looked around the sparkly walls of the Great Hall. “At ze Palace of Beaxbatons, we ‘ave ice sculptures all around ze dining chamber at Chreestmas. Zey do melt, of course… zey are like ‘uge statues of diamond, glittering around ze place.”
Draceana leaned in. “That sounds lovely. We have such things around Hogwarts as well, just not in the dining hall. There are too many rowdy types here, especially those Gryffindor people, rather uncouth they are.”
Harry looked beyond the table towards Crabbe and Goyle, then at Draceana. “I think casting stones is unwise in glass houses.”
She smirked. “Not when I know a wall is not in my way.”
Fleur giggled. “You keep good company.”
Draceana shrugged. “Adequate, I suppose.” She took a small bite of her salmon, which Harry noticed she had barely touched. “What do you think of our food?”
“It is good, but ours seemply superb, ze finest in France. And we ‘ave choirs of wood nymphs, ‘oo serenade us as we eat. We ‘ave none of zis cold armor in ze ‘alls, and eef a poltergeist ever entaired into Beauxbaton, ‘e would be expelled like zat.” Fluer slapped her hand onto the table and gave a quick nod to herself.
“Very interesting indeed. I am quite curious to know more, perhaps over tea?”
Fleur titled her head back and forth. “I don’t see why not, we will discuss details later.”
Draceana smiled. “Wonderful.” She looked over to Fleur’s partner. “Oh and Roger, it would do you well to make sure your fork ends up in your mouth. Entracing as Fleur is, I’m sure she would be even more enchanting with someone that doesn’t have food on his face.”
Roger shook himself out of his stupor and wiped his face. “Right, sorry.”
Fleur flashed a grateful smile to Draceana from across the table, and she gave one of her own back.
Harry barely registered the food in his mouth as he watched the exchange. There was always some expectation that Draceana would be adept in affairs such as this, but to see it in action, compared to the pompous air that she always held everywhere else, created too sharp a contrast for him to be able to process all at once. Despite everything she had put him through, he had to admit that it was impressive.
He’d never tell her that to her face, but there was no sense in refusing to notice it.
Harry looked around the Hall to clear his thoughts. Hagrid was sitting at one of the other staff tables. His horrible hairy brown suit wrapped around his massive frame, but he almost looked small gazing up at the top table. The groundskeeper waved, but it wasn’t at Harry, who looked around and that Madame Maxine was returning it, her opals glittering in the candlelight.
“Oh my… him?”
Harry turned to Draceana, who had a calculating look in her eyes. In the end, she shrugged and struck up another conversation with Fleur, who was happy to engage.
Hermione was now teaching Krum to say her name properly. He kept calling her “Hermy-own.”
“Her-my-oh-nee.” Her voice was slow and clear.
“Herm-own-ninny.”
She caught Harry’s eye for a moment and giggled. “Close enough.”
When all the food had been consumed, Dumbledore stood up and asked the students to do the same. Once no seats were filled, the headmaster waved his wand and all the tables zoomed back along the walls, leaving the floor clear. Another flick of his wrist conjured a raised platform into existence along the right wall. Set upon it were a set of drums, several guitars, a lute, a cello, and some bagpipes.
The Weird Sisters trooped up onto the stage to applause that tread the line between enthusiastic and manic. They were all extremely hairy, adorned in black robes that had been ripped in torn in places that somehow made them look stylized instead of ragged. So focused was Harry upon them picking up their instruments that he’d almost forgotten what was coming up. It was only after the lanterns had all gone out and the other champions stood up that he remember.
“Come Potter.” Draceana held out her hand. “We’re supposed to dance.”
He could feel his meal start to rise from his stomach as he stood up. So dulled were his thoughts from dread that he took her hand more out of seeking anything to hold onto. She glanced at his face, her eyes narrowing, but guided him onto the dance floor with a gentleness that nearly shook him from his stupor. They walked onto the brightly lit dance floor, a slow, mournful tune flowing across it from the instruments of the Weird Sisters. He avoided catching anyone’s eye (he could see George and Fred waving at him and sniggering), fixating on his hand intertwined with Dracaena's. She took hold of his other one and guided it to her waist while keeping a firm grip on the one she was already holding. He always expected her skin to be cold, but she was warm.
She looked at him, her face softer than it usually was. “Just let me guide you.”
And so he let her. He had no experience with dancing, but it was clear that Draceana did as she steered them across the dance floor, murmuring in low tones that only he could hear, telling him where to step and how to move with her. He kept his eyes fixed over the heads of everyone watching, but he could tell most of them were looking at them, the two people who they never could have imagined together dancing in front of them. That shock soon wore off, and soon many of the crowd took their steps onto the dance floor. His shoulders relaxed one the champions were no longer the center of attention, but his eyes still wandered.
Neville and Ginny were dancing nearby. He could see her wincing frequently as Neville trod on her feet, but she seemed happy overall. Their eyes crossed once, but he looked away before he could see her reaction.

"Scared, Potter?"
At her playful smirk, Harry chuckled softly and met her gaze.
"A little?"
"You know you can't back out now, right?"
malfoyd smiled as if making a stern threat, but she couldn't hide her trembling fingertips and the blush creeping up her cheeks.
Looking into her eyes, Harry lowered his voice with absolute earnestness.
"No... I think I'm okay. I was just thinking about the day we first met."
"W-what...? Wh-why on earth are you thinking about that now?" As she rolled her eyes in flustered surprise, Harry offered her a gentle, affectionate smile.
"Truth is... at first, you kept teasing me and giving me a hard time... I didn't like it at all. But as time went on, getting to know you better and going through everything together, I became certain. Since being with you is so wonderful, I want to spend so much more time with you in the future. I learned countless spells at Hogwarts, but right now, this is the only thing I'm sure of."
At Harry's sincere confession, malfoyd pressed her lips tightly together, holding back the overwhelming emotions welling up inside her.
"I've been waiting for this moment my whole life. The greatest magic in my life is falling in love with you."
After a brief silence, she finally let out a tearful yet impossibly radiant smile, and muttered softly,
"Seriously... typical Potter..."

"A love potion." Snape repeated flatly.
"I didn't say the word love," replied back Draconia, "But yes, something of that nature."
Snape sighed, but continued writing, not bothering to look up at her.
"What symptoms are you experiencing?"
"A quickening heart rate. Shakiness around the... suspect. Unusual emotional responses in the presence of the suspect. Intrusive thoughts of the suspect. Romantic ideation." Draconia's face blushed as she said the words aloud.
"And who might the 'suspect' be?"
"I don't see how that's relevan-"
"Miss Malfoid, this is a very serious accusation. It is my responsibility as a professor to inquire fully. Who is it?" Snape finally set his papers aside, looking up at her from his desk.
Draconia twiddled her wand in her fingertips, refusing to even look in his direction.
"...Potter.", she said, pushing a lock of silver hair behind her ear.
"Potter." Snape repeated.
"T-that's what I said, isn't it?"
"Potter can hardly brew a sleeping draught much less a-"
"Then Granger brewed it! Or he stole it! I don't know! Can you just test me? Or something?"
Snape stood up, seemingly annoyed by the whole ordeal. He turned, reaching into his cabinet of restricted potions, rustling through them, looking for something.
"And why, pray tell, would Potter do this to you?"
Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn't considered that. Why would he? Unless he... She shook her head, as if the thought could be shaken out of her.
"To humiliate me, obviously. I bet he's having a grand laugh right now at my expense. Stupid Potter." She clenched her fists, indignant.
Snape turned and produced a small potion of silver liquid.
"Drink this. It will cure you of whatever may, or may not be ailing you."
She swiped it from him and held it up to her lips, but paused. Why did she pause? Drinking this would cure her of the love potion, it would make these inconvenient feelings go away. So then why isn't she drinking it? She clenched her fists, and chugged the potion before she could second guess herself again. She stood there, eyes closed and cheeks pink, waiting for something to change.
"How long until it starts to wor-"
"Instantly."
She stood there for several more seconds, holding her breath, until Harry appeared in her mind again, and her pulse quickened.
Her eye twitched, "Well clearly this has been a huge waste of time."
"Obviously." Snape said flatly, the corner of his mouth twitching slightly.

[Wand to my heart, I wish we never met]
"Harry Potter...IS DEAD!"
You could almost feel the air being ripped away from the courtyard they had gathered in. Gasps and murmurs rippled through what was left of Hogwarts, others cried out in disbelief, Dracaena stood there in silence.
She looked past Voldemort and saw Hagrid, carrying Harry in his arms; eyes closed as if only asleep, but Hagrid was crying, and that told her all she had to know.
Voldemort had used the killing curse. Of course he did, after Dumbledore fell, the only one in his way was Potter.
The world blurred around her, whatever the dark lord was saying didn't register in her mind as words.
As if drawing the blinds, the world began to dim, until she was left only with the image of his body in Hagrid's arms, and the sound of her thoughts.
"We had just escaped the room of requirement"
"I saw him last night"
"Maybe he's only pretending."
"He promised me he would come back"
He had come back, only not in the way she had hoped.
The night before he left to meet Voldemort in the forest, she had pleaded with him to stay.
"You know what he'll do to you Harry! You can't possibly go, you're our only hope of winning against him."
"Look, I-"
"You'll what!" She growled as she jumped up from the bed, venom in her words befitting of her house.
Dracaena glared at him, battered and bloodied, the one chosen to save everyone. But that night he was hers alone. Harry looked up at her and smiled, in such a way that felt forced. He knew she could see through him but he felt a brave front was the appropriate thing to show.
"I'm not afraid to die, Dracaena."
"I know that! But I am!"
"Even more than that, I'm afraid of losing you!"
Feeling the tears roll down her face, she turned away from him.
"4 years! In all our time at school only now do I have your attention; only now do you look at me with love; only now do you open your heart to me."
Her voice trembled, she began stumbling over her words. Harry moved to embrace her but she kept speaking.
"I lov- I've loved you, all this time, even when your eyes drifted elsewhere, even when you danced with other girls, even when your lips touched those of another; I loved you."
"And now!"
She spun around, facing him again.
"Now that I have you, you tell me you want to die! To go into that forest and let HIM take you away from me!"
"I'll come back." Harry answered, meekly meeting her gaze.
"How! Just because you're 'The boy who lived' doesn't mean you'll be that again! And what happens if you don't come back?! What am I to do then?"
Her voice roared even louder, he was certain others had awoken at the noise.
Looking away as if to shield himself, he softly whispered
"You'll find another..."
"Another what!"
"Don't you start with me Harry James Potter! I-"
Her voice had gone from a roar to a whimper as she wept again. Only then did Harry get up to hold her.
It was supposed to be a moment of warmth in the middle of a war, and yet to Dracaena, the embrace was ice cold.
And here, her worst fears were made manifest. Harry was dead.

“Malfoy…”
Nothing.
“Malfoy, are you sleeping?”
Nothing.
Harry looked at the pile of books between them.
“And you said it was Gryffindors who lacked the discipline for independent study,” he muttered.
Nothing.
Harry leaned a little closer.
“Malfoy? Are you really asleep?”
Nothing.
He hesitated.
“…Hey. Will you go to the ball with me?”
Draco’s eyes remained firmly shut.
Silence.
Then—
“Ask me when I’m awake, Potter.”
Harry nearly fell out of his chair.
Draco smiled into her sleeve.

The most perfect layout for the story would be:
-Initially rebuffed by harry on the train in book 1, initially she's starstruck and wants harry as a lackey out of vanity
-Over the course of the next several books, she grows a deeper appreciation for him
-Chamber of secrets seeds her admiration, she duels Potter and despite all her snide remarks, she gets humiliated by him. Initially she's upset, but there's a small short scene of her feeling a bit proud that Harry is so skilled.
-Her feelings transform from respect and admiration to a HARD crush during the Yule ball, both of them get left behind by their dates, and after initial snide remarks and jabs, they dance together, just a single short dance. However, it's only later that night that she realizes why her heart flutters when she sees his face.
-Half-Blood prince is when Harry begins to fall for her, during his observations of her movements with the Marauder's Map. What initially is him cynically observing someone he sees as an enemy becomes concern as he realizes how over the last year she's become a wreck. No longer the stunning and confident girl she used to be, she's tired, depressed, and Harry tries to help. It's that exact concern that blinds him to the fact that she's become a Death Eater, and it dooms Dumbledore.
-The bathroom scene is where it becomes tragic. Harry sees her as what she has truly become but been suppressing when she's at Hogwarts: A death eater. Forced to work for the man who killed HIS FAMILY. Threatened with her life and the life of her own parents if she doesn't kill his own beloved mentor. She loses the fight, she nearly dies, and the whole time afterwards she wishes she did because then at least she would get away from what she has become.
-The biggest deviation from the original story would be that after the rescue in the room of requirement, she doesn't disappear from the story. Instead, Voldemort keeps her around with the desire to groom her into part of the next generation of Death Eater, as his right hand. He forces her to do terrible things, and all the while she hates herself for being too weak, too cowardly to fight back. However, it's only when Harry arrives during the seige of Hogwarts that she recognizes that she has to make a choice. She witnesses Voldemort laying into Harry, winning the duel, and chooses to break the Death Eater ranks and turn her wand on her master.
-She confesses her love for Harry, and he reciprocates those same feelings for her. They both carry baggage, a pile of mistakes and unresolved issues, but they understand and care about each other in a way nobody can possibly hope to understand, they are opposite sides of the same coin. Their pure, authentic, mutual love burns Voldemort like nothing else, a familiar pain that terrifies him.
In the end, just as Voldemort was killed for the first time by a love he could never understand, he is slain for the final time by a love he could never extinguish.
Something else to note is the sheer number of ways there are to make this work and potential endings for their relationship, that do almost nothing to harm the main plot (and in some cases strengthen it)
I've talked about the Yule Ball before but let's talk about Sectumsempra
We know the overall gist of the scene, of course: Malfoy is in over his head, having a mental breakdown in terror because Voldemort's just threatened his life and he has nowhere to go. Harry walks in on him and for once in the book doesn't see a Death Eater, he sees a peer at the end of his rope breaking down and in fear for his life. Then they duel, Harry tries out a spell he doesn't know and nearly kills him.
As-is the scene already works, but if you add in romantic tension between Harry and Malfoid before this point the meaning and context of the moment changes completely on both ends.
Say their relationship was the one that fell apart in book 5 rather than the one with Cho, for example, and the scene plays out as normal. The event doesn't change, but what it means to Harry and to Malfoid absolutely does. Because these two aren't antagonistic peers anymore, they're former lovers, and maybe this is what breaks Malfoy to the extent she finally asks Snape for help. Some have suggested she'd instead go to Harry; personally I don't buy it and even if I did it would make the ending near impossible BUT it's still a potential answer.
Now say you're fine with changing the events. Another possibility is that Malfoid and Harry duel briefly, but Malfoid breaks down and stops casting. Harry comforts her to the best of his ability, but she can't tell him anything, and they end up kissing in the destroyed remnants of the bathroom. Or Harry goes to visit her in the hospital wing (which Harry is only able to do because Malfoid requests him specifically). Harry tries to comfort her, and looking back on it later he could potentially realize his morale boost was what she needed to finish the vanishing cabinet and get Hogwarts invaded.
Making Malfoy a girl sounds like such a small change but it really does give the story a dozen new tools to play around with.

Malfoid train rewrite:
Three girls entered and Harry recognized the middle one at once: it was the pale girl from Madam Malkin’s robe shop. She was looking at Harry with a lot more interest than she’d shown back in Diagon Alley.
"Is it true?" she said. "They’re saying all down the train that Harry Potter’s in this compartment. So it’s you, is it?"
"Yes" said Harry. He was looking at the other girls. One was short and looked surprisingly tough. She had short, mousy brown hair that was badly combed.
The other was taller than all of them and very thin. She had dark eyes and stood with almost no expression at all.
"Oh, this is Crabbe." said the pale girl gesturing to the shorter one, who gave an enthusiastic toothy grin. "And this is Goyle." The tall girl gave the faintest of smiles.
"And my name’s Malfoy." She said proudly. One hand's thumb pointed to her chest, the other hand on her hip. "Draconia Malfoy."
Ron gave a slight cough, which might have been hiding a snigger. Draconia Malfoy looked at him.
"Think my name’s funny, do you? No need to ask who you are. My father told me all the Weasleys have red hair, freckles and more children than they can afford." Her lip was curled in disgust.
She looked back to Harry.
"You’ll soon find out some wizarding families are much better than others, Potter. You don’t want to go making friends with the wrong sort." She said, with a not so subtle glance at Ron. "I can help you there." She declared.
She held out her hand to shake Harry’s, but Harry didn’t take it.
"I think I can tell who the wrong sort are for myself, thanks." He said coolly.
Draconia Malfoy looked confused, retracted her hand, then narrowed her eyes then slowly said. "You would reject, me? I’d be careful, if I were you, Potter." Her smile had totally faded, her brow had intensified and her green eyes had gone dark. "Unless you’re a bit politer you’ll go the same as your parents. They didn’t know what was good for them, either. You hang around with riff-raff like the Weasleys and that, Hagrid, and it’ll rub off on you."
Harry grit his teeth while Ron jumped up, fists curled, his face as Red as his hair.
"Say that again." He said. "I dare you!"
"Oh." She tilted her head "I knew Weasleys had no class but you're going to fight a girl, are you?’ Malfoy sneered. The other girls chuckled.
"I think it would be smart if you just left." Said Harry bluntly.
"Harry, you can't let her say that about your parents!" Exclaimed Ron.
Harry just frowned and stayed in his seat. Trying not to let his anger get the better of him.
"Oh, so noble Potter. Wouldn't dare hit a girl." She looked at the table full of treats and her eyes sparkled. "But we don’t feel like leaving. We're so hungry you see. Surely you noble gentlemen wouldn't mind sharing with us, young ladies." She said mockingly.
Malfoy nudged Goyle, who then walked forward into the room, looming over Ron. She looked entirely unphased by Ron's clenched fists. Ron hesitated as the tall girl reached past him towards the Chocolate Frogs.
He looked at Harry, who still wore a dark expression, then turned back and lunged forward.
To his surprise, he was pushed to the ground by Crabbe before he even got close. She puffed out her chest and said "Ha, got you! Stupid Weasley! That's what-"
She was interrupted by Goyles scream. A chocolate frog flew past Ron as he got off the floor.
Scabbers the rat was hanging off her long fingers, sharp little teeth sunk into Goyle’s smooth knuckle. "Ah! Gross! Ah, get it off!" Goyle shook Scabbers back and forth as she howled. Scabbers finally flew off and hit the window, while Goyle started crying.
She ran out the room with Crabbe right behind. Draconia went to follow but stopped, glaring back at Harry and Ron.
"You'll regret that. Potter."
She vanished and Harry let out a sigh of relief.
Ron scratched his head and said "Why is she so mad at you? It wasn't your Rat that bit her."

The portrait hole swung open and a Gryffindor first-year stumbled through.
Malfoy followed close behind, one hand gripping the back of the boy's robes.
The common room went silent.
She didn't seem to notice.
Malfoy spotted Harry slumped miserably in an armchair by the fire, Ron beside him apparently attempting to console him.
Her face brightened.
She marched toward him, dragging her captive along behind her.
She stopped in front of Harry and looked down at him with a smile completely inappropriate for someone holding a captive.
“Take me to Hogsmeade.”
Harry stared at her.
Then at the first-year.
Malfoy followed his gaze.
“Oh.”
Apparently she'd forgotten about him.
She leaned down and whispered into the boy's ear.
“I'll see you later.”
His eyes widened.
Malfoy released him, gave him a little kick on the backside, and sent him scampering away.
Her gaze returned immediately to Harry.
“Take me to Hogsmeade.”
“I can't, I—”
“You most certainly can.”
She shoved Ron aside, caught Harry by the arm, and pulled him to his feet.
“And you're buying. A reward for the pleasure of my company.”
“Malfoy, I can't!”
Harry jerked his arm free.
That got her attention.
She looked him up and down, sizing him up.
Then she snatched his arm right back.
“And why is that?”
Harry stared pointedly at her hand around his arm.
She made no effort to remove it.
“I don't have a parent to sign my permission slip.”
“Permission slip?”
“Yes. I can't go without a parent or guardian signing it.”
“Oh.”
She considered this for perhaps half a second.
“Daddy will fix it.”
Harry stared at her.
“What?”
“I'll talk to him later.”
“Malfoy, that doesn't mean I can just—”
She was already pulling him toward the portrait hole.
“Potter.”
“What?”
“Take me to Hogsmeade.”

Harry Potter has a peculiar question for our Slytherin Princess.
But how will Malfoid react to something like THAT???
Yule Ball pic later tonight...

Harry loses a bet and asks Malfoid to the Yule Ball.
It started, as many of Harry’s worst ideas did, with Fred and George Weasley.
"You haven't asked anyone," Fred said, as if this were news.
"He hasn't asked anyone," George agreed, "because the only person he wants to ask is going with Diggory.”
Harry told them to shut up. He was in the common room. Ron was practising looking like a person who would rather die than wear dress robes. Hermione had a book open and was not reading it.
"Tell you what," said Fred. "A Galleon says you won't ask Malfoid."
"Which Malfoy?" said Ron, alarmed.
"There's only one at school, Ronald. Do keep up."
"I'm not asking Malfoy," said Harry.
"Malfoid," said George, pleasantly. "That's the bet. You don't. We collect. You do — well. Then you've got a partner, haven't you? Everybody wins. Except you, probably."
"She's not going to say yes."
"Then you've lost nothing," said Fred. "Go on. Champion's privilege. The worst she can do is hex you, and she does that on Tuesdays anyway."
Harry should have refused, but he was anything but a coward.
He found her in the library, after asking around a bit, which would have been embarrassing were it not assumed he was looking for a fight. She sat at a table in the corner by a window. Her pale hair was pulled back so tightly it seemed to lift the pointed bones of her face. She was alone. That was the first piece of luck. The second was that she looked up before he could lose his nerve.
She sighed and rolled her eyes. “What do you want, Potter?”
"I lost a bet," Harry said. "So let's get this over with. D'you want to go to the Yule Ball with me?"
She looked at him for a few seconds without changing her expression. Then she looked to the side. She appeared to be blushing.
“You must be desperate.” She attempted a laugh. “Is this some kind of joke, Potter? Me, going to the ball with a half-blood like you? Get real.”
“Alright, good,” he said firmly. He turned to leave before she could humiliate him any further.
“Yes,” she proclaimed with an upward lilt, as if she had surprised herself.
He stopped in his tracks. “What?” He almost raised his voice too loud for the library before turning around to look at her again. She had a mischievous smile.
“Yes.”
“Why,” Harry asked, exasperated. This was not what he expected.
“Why? Because I can’t resist the opportunity to torture you. I am going to embarrass you, if you are even brave enough to follow through.”
Harry sputtered. “What? You can’t find a date?” It was his best attempt.
“Oh I could. I have been asked many times already. I have no interest in those inferior specimens. The Malfoys have standards, you see. But I will make an exception for you, because this is just irresistible.”
He stood there, speechless. He looked out the window. Before he could come up with a response, she picked up her book and stood up. She walked over to him, grabbed his tie, and pulled him close, staring him down with malevolent eyes.
"Eight o'clock on Christmas Day. Dress robes. Not a Muggle dinner jacket. Not whatever the Dursleys think is formal. If you arrive smelling of broom polish I shall hex your shoes together and let you open the dance like that. Do we understand each other?"
Before he could come up with a response, she walked away.
…
"You asked her."
"That was the bet."
"You asked her and she said yes."
Ron was pacing around the room. Seamus and Dean were laughing it up.
"She's going to hex you," Ron said. "That's the game, that is. She says yes, you show up, she hexes you in front of four schools and tells her father you begged."
"She already said she'd hex me. That part's settled. It's only if I step on her toes or dress like a Muggle."
"You are Muggle-raised," Ron said, as if this had only just become legally relevant. "What does she think dress robes are? You can't wear trousers from the Dursleys, Harry. She'll know. They've got a look.”
Hermione, when they took it downstairs, pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Fred and George," she said.
"Fred and George," Harry agreed.
"And she said yes."
"She said yes, and then she said a lot of other things."
Hermione was quiet for a moment.
"Wear your green dress robes," she said at last. "The ones from Madam Malkin. Not a tie. Not Dudley's anything. If she tries to pull something nasty don’t let her get away with it."
“Right,” he replied. He had no idea what that meant.
Fred and George, passing the portrait hole with the satisfied air of men who had invented Christmas, flipped him a Galleon.
"Don't spend it before she kills you," said Fred.
"Buy a card," said George. "Something tasteful."
Harry told them to get stuffed. He put the Galleon in his pocket anyway.
….
The green robes made him look, he thought, like a Christmas tree that had learned shame. Harry checked his shoes three times. They were the same shoes.
"If she hexes you," Ron said, struggling into maroon velvet and a quantity of lace that history would not forgive, "I'll — I'll do something. I don't know what. Don't look at me like that. I'm in this."
By ten to eight the entrance hall was a crush of dress robes and panic. Parvati went by in shocking pink and gold and did not look at Harry at all, which he deserved. He had spent two weeks looking as if he might ask her and then asked the worst person in Slytherin for a Galleon.
"Potter."
He turned.
Malfoid was on the marble stairs.
She wore a black dress. Her hair was down. She even had makeup on. Harry’s stomach did a flip. The weirdest part was, she was smiling at him. And it wasn’t a mischievous grin, like her usual sadistic glee. She looked like she was happy to see him. But she quickly changed her expression, as if she remembered, to one of disdain.
"Green," she said. "Acceptable. Not Muggle. You may keep your toes for the present."
She stepped down and took his arm, with surprising ease. "Do not grin. You look simple when you grin. We are going in. If you tell anyone this was a bet I will kill you."
"It was a bet."
"I know it was a bet, Potter. I would not have said yes to a sincere request. Do not flatter yourself.”
…
The house tables were gone. In their place stood a crowd of smaller ones, each with a lantern that burned without smoke. The walls were covered in silver frost. Overhead the usual black, starry ceiling had been crossed with garlands of mistletoe and ivy.
It seemed like everyone turned to look as they came in, and whispered to each other.
Malfoy’s fingers tightened once on his sleeve and then went loose, as if she had remembered an audience.
"Breathe," she said, barely moving her mouth. "If you faint I shall leave you on the floor.”
"I'm not going to faint."
McGonagall met them before they could sit down. She looked at Harry. She looked at Malfoy. Several decades of House warfare passed behind her eyes and sat down, exhausted.
"Potter. Miss Malfoy. You will line up with the other Champions after the meal. I expect decorum."
"Yes, Professor," said Malfoy, with only a slight hint of sarcasm.
McGonagall's mouth thinned.
"The robes will do," she told Harry. "Try to remember, a waltz is not a tackle."
She swept off.
"She likes you," Malfoy said. "How unaccountable."
They were seated next to Cedric and Cho of course, at the Champion’s table. Starting the torture already, Harry thought. Krum arrived last with a girl Harry did not recognise for three full seconds as Hermione. Periwinkle blue. Hair up. Ron looked at Harry with wide eyes. Harry just shrugged, as if to say: “What of it?”
Cho smiled at Harry as if she were sorry and not sorry. Cedric poured pumpkin juice like a man determined to be decent.
"Didn't know you two were—" Cedric began, and stopped, which was why people liked Cedric.
"We aren't," said Harry and Malfoy together.
They looked at each other.
“I lost a bet,” she said suddenly, smiling. Harry just shook his head. She stole his excuse. Typical.
Neither Cedric nor Cho seemed to know if she was serious, or how to respond.
Dinner arrived and passed without a major incident, besides that Malfoid was making faces across the room, playing it up.
"You're enjoying this," Harry muttered.
"I enjoy winning. It is not the same as enjoying you." She narrowed her eyes as she set the goblet down. "Do not look at Granger like that. It is a hair potion and a neckline. We manage it before breakfast."
"She's my friend."
"I know. It is one of your more baffling hobbies. It is quite beneath you.”
Was that a compliment? Harry just sighed. There was no point in arguing. She only wanted to get a rise out of him.
Suddenly it was time for the dance.
Harry stood. His chair shrieked on the floor. Malfoy stood up smoothly, as if chairs had never misbehaved in her life. She put her hand in the air and waited for him to take it, sighing with irritation.
Her palm was cold in his hand.
They walked to the floor and waited for the music to start.
"If you make a mistake I will kill you. If you look at Chang I will kill you. If you count, count silently. If you talk, do not talk about Quidditch,” she whispered.
"You're nervous."
"I am Slytherin. I am never nervous. I am prepared."
Harry put his hand at her waist as the music started to play. He thought he could see a glisten of sweat on her forehead. He used to tease her about her forehead for being much too big. Undeniably, however, she looked absolutely beautiful that night.
Despite all his practice, it felt completely different in front of everyone, and with Malfoy no less. She was quietly counting as they stepped. Whether it was for his sake, or because she was afraid he would embarrass her, he wasn’t sure.
"You can close your mouth," she murmured. "You have fallen off a broom in front of the whole school. This is only dancing."
"You're counting."
"I am not."
They turned. Mistletoe swam. Ron's face went by, maroon and betrayed. Pansy went by, personally wounded. Snape, at the staff table, looked as if he had bitten a fork.
"Your Head of House wants me dead," Harry said.
"He wants a great many people dead. You will have to queue." A pause. Her voice dropped, unwilling. "You are not as catastrophic as I expected."
"Thanks."
"It was not a compliment. I am, against my better judgement, not hexing you."
"Yet."
"Do not make suggestions."
The dance ended before he had decided whether to bow. Cedric bowed. Krum nodded the way Krum did everything. Harry let go of her waist.
"Well," she said. "Your twins may keep their Galleon. I am going outside. I am tired of being stared at. Besides, it is much too warm here."
For some reason, Harry went after her.
…
He thought he had lost her, when he saw her through a frosted window.
She stood outside, leaning on the balcony, despite the fact that it was snowing and she was wearing only a dress. She clutched herself in her arms, clearly freezing.
"You followed me."
"You walked off before we had time to bow.”
"I said yes to a dance. I did not say yes to stay until midnight." She did not turn. "Go back in. Granger will want to lecture you on fraternising. She has her hair up. She will be unstoppable."
“It is freezing out.”
She didn’t respond, but her body was shivering.
He almost put his robe around her shoulders, but thought better of it.
"Why'd you say yes?" he asked.
"You asked."
"That's not a reason. You could've said no. You do that all the time."
She tilted her head up, looking up at the stars.
“I told you already. I like to see you squirm.”
She came up to him slowly, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. He flushed, not knowing how to react. He could hear his heart beating in his chest. She just looked into his eyes, smiling with glee. For some reason beyond himself, he thought of kissing her.
“Besides, I couldn’t stand to see you go with that Patil-girl. Totally beneath you.” She remembered herself suddenly and added “For a half-blood, anyway.”
"You're a real piece of work, Malfoid."
“Don’t call me that!” she said, forcing a pout. She stepped back, pretending to be upset, but she could not hide from him the impression that she enjoyed it somehow. She went back to leaning on the railing, looking out, as if that would be the end of it.
He leaned against the railing right next to her. It was only fair that he got his revenge now.
"I didn't step on your toes," Harry said.
"Do not fish."
“Since I did a good job, I think you owe me another dance.”
She paused, and then burst out into laughter, almost maniacal. It caught him by surprise.
“I don’t owe you anything.”
Harry took that for a no. He turned to leave.
“Are you coming inside? You’ll catch a cold.”
Suddenly she grabbed his left arm and hooked her arm under it.
"You may have one more dance," she said. "After that I am returning you to that rotten Weasley boy. If you tell anyone funny stories about what happened tonight you will not wake up the next morning.”
He couldn’t help but laugh at her idle threats. The rumors about them were already spreading and there was nothing to do about it now. Hell, he wouldn’t be surprised if they made the front page of the Daily Prophet. They made a striking couple, he had to admit. But he didn’t say anything about it, lest she change her mind.
When they got back into the ballroom, everyone was dancing. Thankfully, hardly anyone noticed them come in. She grabbed his hand, and put the other hand onto her waist.
They danced for a while without speaking. Harry hoped that nobody noticed when she laid her head on his shoulder and sighed.
“You are quite serviceable for a half-blood. I think I will keep you.”

Turning Malfoy and Harry into a romance that comes together as two opposing houses to work together with an act of love to defeat the great evil that was once defeated because an act of love. By two people who were once antagonistic to each other. Is so many levels of peak.
