Today is Earth Day and the penultimate round of negotiations for the UN Global Plastics Treaty will commence in Ottawa tomorrow.

Microfibres shed from laundry account for 35% of all primary #microplastics in our oceans and continue to pollute our waters day by day. Many solutions are in development but filtration technologies are proven to be extremely effective and are both available and scalable today.
A new whitepaper co-authored by @aplastic_planet Planet Care, Matter @5gyres and @XerosTech calls on the UK Government to mandate microfibre filters in all new washing machines and summarises the latest research and evidence.

We are supporting a whitepaper which has been delivered to the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs today. It calls for more to be done to tackle microplastic pollution, including mandating microplastic filters in new washing machines, as the most effective, near-term solution to reduce the release of microplastics in the environment.
