Lying on a hospital bed, rolled-up blankets propping up the remains of her legs, 10-year-old double-amputee Iyerusalem is among scores of civilians wounded in northern Ethiopia after fighting erupted last month.

"I was in our compound with my older brother and our horse when we were hit. My brother and the horse died," she told AFP from Ayder Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in #Mekelle, capital of the northern Tigray state.
Many of the wounded live in remote villages hours from the hospital along difficult roads where there has been fighting and shelling.
"Right now, my amputated legs hurt badly," said Iyerusalem, who comes from Qarsole village in Alamata district, south of Mekelle.
"If I get medical treatment and can walk again, I want to go back to school," she said, as her father Hiluf watched anxiously.

Fighting in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray, Amhara, and Afar regions erupted on September 22 between the Ethiopian military and forces aligned with the Tigrayan People’s Liberation Front.
This follows reported clashes and airstrikes in Tigray since August.
Civilians must be protected.

#Ethiopia 🇪🇹 CPJ calls on President Taye Atske Selassie to uphold Ethiopia’s “historic commitment” to “upholding human dignity” and “justice” that he referred to in his speech to #UNGA on Wednesday by immediately releasing five journalists who have spent more than three years in detention awaiting trial.
Gobeze Sisay, Meskerem Abera, Genet Asmamaw, Dawit Begashaw, and Abay Zewdu have been detained since 2023 on terrorism charges linked to their reporting on the conflict in the Amhara region. In August, the five journalists were pressured to sign apology letters admitting responsibility for the conflict in exchange for their release. They refused.
CPJ also calls on authorities to demonstrate these principles and their commitment to "free peoples" by ending the pressure on independent media through the revocation of journalists’ credentials, expulsion of foreign outlets, and raids on newsrooms.

HRF condemns Ethiopia’s sham June 1 general elections, which crowned dictator Abiy Ahmed and his Prosperity Party with a landslide victory following an electoral process void of genuine democratic competition and discredited by opposition boycotts, political repression, the exclusion of significant parts of the electorate, and a campaigning overwhelmingly skewed in favor of the incumbent.

News: Coalition for #Ethiopian Unity denounces electoral process, cites widespread irregularities
The Coalition for Ethiopian Unity has accused the ruling party of systematically undermining #Ethiopia’s electoral process, alleging widespread intimidation, voter manipulation, and obstruction of opposition participation ahead of the upcoming election.
In a statement issued today, the coalition said the “pre-conditions of the electoral process are not met,” arguing that the fate of the country was being decided through a process that lacked “the true participation of the people.”

Three years ago, on April 6, #Ethiopia journalist Genet Asmamaw was arrested in a sweeping crackdown on reporting about conflict in the Amhara region. She remains behind bars on terrorism charges that carry a potential death sentence.
She is due to present her defense in May.
Genet’s continued detention, along with three other journalists also accused of terrorism — Meskerem Abera, Dawit Begashaw, and Gobeze Sisay — underscores the risks facing independent media in Ethiopia and the criminalization of reporting on matters of public interest.
@pressfreedom calls for all four journalists' immediate release and for Ethiopian authorities to stop criminalizing the press.

CPJ calls on Ethiopian authorities to do everything in their power to locate and free @AddisStandard managing editor Million Beyene who was taken by unidentified men from his newsroom in the capital Addis Ababa on Wednesday morning.
“Million Beyene’s disappearance from the Addis Standard’s newsroom marks a disturbing new chapter in the troubles faced by this respected digital outlet after authorities revoked its registration certificate in February,” said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Muthoki Mumo.
Addis Standard has repeatedly faced state pressure, including a newsroom raid in 2025 and a ban in 2021.
