Congratulations to the Canadian Labour Congress (@CanadianLabour) for passing a resolution that calls on workers to refuse to handle weapons and military equipment destined for Israel. This is an important way that workers can prevent Canadian weapons from facilitating genocide. canadianlabour.ca/clc-calls-…

While Lula is a generational leader produced by a world-historic movement of the working class—and Janones is a digital commander who could only have emerged in Brazil—this victory still offers invaluable lessons for a left that wants not just to play defense against the far right but to go on the counterattack, combining the politics of the street with a centralized online army. thenation.com/article/world/…

Higher interest rates won’t end Trump’s trade war. They won’t bring down oil prices or stop a war in Iran. But they will make mortgages and loans more expensive, and put even more pressure on families and businesses. This is a bad call. cbc.ca/news/business/livesto…

Canadians will now pay twice for this oil shock (the 14th since 1973): 1st at the pumps, and now through higher interest rates as Bank of Cda hikes. Bank admits Cda has excess capacity, but lifts rates anyway. Monetary tightening to fight an external price shock: why? #cdnecon /2

Lula will be defending the Amazon, while Carney builds pipelines and cements Canada’s position as a global laggard on climate action.
Congratulations, President @LulaOficial, on your re-election in Brazil. The relationship between Canada and Brazil has flourished under our partnership. Let’s seize this opportunity to make it even stronger, together — to create major new trade opportunities, protect the environment, and build greater prosperity for both our peoples.

Ford beats the NDP to this populist, and likely popular, take. It’s a shame because unlike conservatives, the left has a legitimate critique of central bank “independence”(that it’s more myth than reality. Central banks are not apolitical, neutral institutions).
Raising interest rates right now is a massive mistake. Higher rates won’t get oil moving through the Strait of Hormuz or lower tariffs on Canadian businesses. They will only make life more expensive for Canadian families and workers, punishing them for something they can’t control.

Mississauga remains stuck in a neoliberal, ratepayer politics. 3 flavours of which were on offer in this mayoral election. For decades, Hazel McCallion kept property taxes artificially low by using development levies to fund services for a growing city. 1/2

It was secret to her success. But there’s little land left to develop. Alvin Tedjo’s promise of city-wide tax freeze, combined w/endorsement of police union (a mayoral endorsement of their bloated budget) means cuts and/or user fees on the cards, despite what Tedjo says. 2/2

The conservative takeover of Toronto city hall, which many had predicted, did not go as planned. Olivia Chow wins a decisive victory over Brad Bradford and returns to power, for her first full 4-year term, at the head of a more progressive council thestar.com/news/gta/city-ha…

Great to see more progressives (and dare I say, some socialists) elected to Toronto city council. All worthy winners, but I’m especially excited to see @chipadovani elected.

Olivia Chow inherited a mess, a city in decline. The Ford/Tory years were characterized by private affluence and public austerity. She has her faults. For someone who taught community organizing, she has not prioritized engaging and mobilizing her base as a counterweight…1/4

…yet unwillingness to take on bloated police budget means 30 cents of every new tax dollar raised has gone to cops, when it could be spent addressing “quality of life” issues that conservatives have used to gain ground and undermine a progressive agenda. 3/4

But school lunches, TTC, affordable housing are all good policy that move TO in right direction. Bradford would take city backward. I’m voting for Chow in hopes that Progress TO, labour, progressives on council will rethink strategy and push her to the left in second term. 4/4.
