“Well, I don’t want to cause any problems, but I will tell you I’d love to see it unified. I have friends on both sides, great people. They’re Irish people. How can they be bad, right? This is personal to me. I know that London’s hard-working bus drivers play a vital role.

After months of campaigning by @unitelondonandeastern, all London bus driver cabs will be fitted with air conditioning by May 2027✊
This summer, temperatures inside some bus cabs soared up to 50°C as most London buses currently rely on cheap and ineffective cooling systems that can lower temperatures by just 2–3°C during a heatwave, leaving drivers suffering from heatstroke, dehydration and fatigue.
Our members said enough was enough and we took action. Now, @Transport for London and London’s bus operators have committed to:
❄️ Air conditioning in all drivers’ cabs by May 2027
☀️ UV protective film to reduce the risk of skin cancer
This is a major win for bus drivers and proof that when workers organise and fight, they can win real improvements to working conditions. 💪
Now progress has been made with TfL, Unite will be keeping up the pressure to make sure these changes are delivered and that drivers don’t have to suffer through another summer.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “This concession from @TfL is an important win in Unite’s campaign to improve conditions for bus drivers in London and beyond. Unite will continue to fight for all bus workers to be kept safe and to be treated with dignity and respect.”
