editing is quite literally the process of transforming footage into a film….even with stellar directing that’s what editing is.

Or you can be a good director that shoots so your editor can just do their job and not have to transform footage in to a film.....

Best proof of this is to look at the assembly edit compared to the final.

If you learn anything from me it's this: Title and logline matter the most with screenwriting.

A lot of new filmmakers know that finding a truly talented DP can elevate their film to another level. But here's something that doesn't get talked about enough: finding a genuinely gifted editor can be just as transformational. Maybe more so.

If you want to be a writer, you have to treat writing as a skill you'll spend the rest of your life learning and improving. There is no point where you've mastered it. No point where you're done learning. Don't go into it with any other mindset.

This is a perfect summary of the edit process 😆
Editing my next short film and my mind is drifting between “I am a terrible filmmaker” and “damn okay steven spielberg” every 20 minutes

100% true! I made a movie using a 10-year old Panasonic camera, edited with the free version of resolve on my 8-year-old Microsoft surface. there is no excuse to stop you from making a movie! SHARKSQUATCH!

there is no better time to be a filmmaker. filmmaking tools are at our fingertips. filmmaking tutorials by experienced cinematographers and editors are plastered all over YouTube. social media allows your film to reach massive audiences without a distribution deal.

Aspiring filmmakers need to see the process of making your film. Document the process via BTS footage, a TikTok reel, a thread on X (or threads). It could be shot listing, pre production meetings, location walk throughs, director tips, producer tips, ANY PART of the process.

Filmmakers, I cannot stress enough how important it is to DOCUMENT YOUR PROCESS!!
Stop marketing the outcome. Start documenting the journey.

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you do not need $50,000 to make a short film.

This is why we created @_microbudgetpod. Filmmaking deserves a space for pure fun and joy, outside of a career ambition.
Chasing a career in filmmaking is funny bc every year I’m like “this is the year” and then it’s not
