seeing people complain that the new godzilla spends too much time on its human narratives and not enough on kaiju battles is so bizarre to me. godzilla has always been rooted in human storytelling, has always used its characters to explore japan’s social and political realities, and minus zero takes that to another level. 10000/10. if you want to prioritize godzilla as pure spectacle rather than a vehicle for sociopolitical commentary, there are plenty of godzilla movies you can watch lol

I'm so pissed that so many people are taking minus zero as being "nationalist" like oh my fucking God.
History is not one sided. Yes. But this movie takes place explicitly on a specific side. It makes perfect sense for it to sympathize more with that side.

Godzilla was created as a coping mechanism for the atrocities of the bombs. And this is probably the first blockbuster that doesn’t hide it in nuance. They literally speak on Hiroshima IN THE DIALOGUE.
But they also have an entire storyline as to how the Japanese used humans as weapons and the affects on the mentality of young pilots during this time. It also shows the extent people will go to for revenge and, ultimately, victory and it does not shy away from showing how nasty humans can be when drowned in hate.
I think people are just shocked as to how un-American this movie is, which is more telling about the people watching it more than anything.

The fact this all happened on Godzilla day is NOT lost on me.
Godzilla is WOKE. Always has been, and always will be.
