A Swiss farm girl inoculated rye with ergot fungus in 1942. Once cultivated, the ergot produced the primary alkaloid compounds needed to synthesize lysergic acid diethylamide, or LSD. The Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz recruited farmers in the Emmental valley to deliberately infect their crops with ergot beginning in the late 1930s. Ergot was normally seen as a toxin to be destroyed on sight to prevent illness and even psychosis if it was accidentally baked into bread and consumed. But Sandoz had already brought several profitable medicines to market developed from lysergic acid and sought to ramp up their supply of ergot. Before long the Emmental farms were transformed by the new cash crop which they sold only to Sandoz. Intelligence organizations, particularly CIA, saw great potential in LSD. In April 1953, biochemist Dr. Sydney Gottleib was chosen to head a new program at CIA called MKUltra, exploring the use of chemical and biological agents for covert operations. The following month, he sent a man to Switzerland with a briefcase full of cash, intending to buy Sandoz’s entire supply of LSD. Gottlieb set up front companies all over the US and dosed unsuspecting test subjects in order to observe the results. He financed research in dozens of universities, none of whom knew their funding was coming from CIA. And at least 33 people outside the US were covertly dosed without their knowledge, all in an effort to learn how to better control and direct the human psyche. Dr. Frank Olson, a CIA bacteriologist, jumped (or was pushed) out of a high window two days after being dosed with LSD in November 1953, in an incident which is still not fully understood. Meanwhile, LSD and other psychedelics made their way into popular usage and had a radical impact on American culture for years to come. Over two dozen commandos disguised in construction vests blocked a major boulevard with a commercial flatbed truck, firing four hundred rounds from military-grade Barrett .50-caliber rifles into an armored SUV—and the intended target survived to tweet the cartel's name from his hospital bed three hours later. The reason might surprise you. At 6:38 AM on June 26, 2020, Mexico City’s Secretary of Citizen Security, Omar García Harfuch, was traveling in an armored Chevrolet Suburban through the upscale neighborhood of Lomas de Chapultepec, heading toward the city center along the Paseo de la Reforma corridor. Mexico City had long considered itself an insulated political bubble, largely detached from the open warfare ravaging rural states like Michoacán, Sinaloa, or Tamaulipas. That illusion shattered in less than three minutes: A white Dodge Ram flatbed truck bearing the logo of a commercial enterprise abruptly cut across the road, blocking both lanes. Two dozen masked hitmen armed with military weaponry leaped from the bed of the truck and trailing chase vehicles, taking up tactical firing positions. They unleashed a synchronized barrage: Barrett .50-caliber anti-material rifles, FN SCAR automatic carbines, fragmentation grenades, and smoke canisters. Over 400 spent shell casings were later recovered from the pavement. The armor-piercing rounds shredded the engine block and shattered the reinforced ballistic glass of Harfuch's Suburban. His two personal bodyguards and an innocent woman driving past on her way to work were killed in the crossfire. Harfuch, returning fire with his service sidearm from the floorboard of the passenger cabin, took three bullets to the shoulder, clavicle, and knee, alongside dozens of shrapnel wounds. Before the hit squad could breach the doors to execute him, municipal police units responding to early 911 radio calls flooded the intersection, forcing the assassins to scatter across nearby residential alleys. The cartel thought they had eliminated the capital's top cop. At 9:32 AM, just three hours after the assault and while lying on a stretcher awaiting surgery at the Hospital Ángeles Mocel, Harfuch posted a public dispatch to the nation on social media: "This morning we were cowardly attacked by the CJNG; two colleagues and friends of mine lost their lives. I have three bullet wounds and several shards of shrapnel. Our nation must continue to stand up to cowardly organized crime. We will move forward." The brazen assault was ordered directly by Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes ("El Mencho") and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG): Under Harfuch's tenure, Mexico City police had relentlessly dismantled CJNG logistics cells, safe houses, and extortive satellite networks attempting to establish dominance in the capital. Within hours, municipal surveillance cameras tracked the getaway routes. Police intercepted and arrested 19 suspects, seizing an arsenal of Barrett rifles, grenade launchers, and tactical radios. The ambush crossed an unprecedented psychological boundary: it proved that the CJNG was willing to bring full-scale military hardware into the diplomatic heart of the nation's capital to hunt a sitting cabinet minister.
