As noted in the @BostonGlobe, COVID is back! And it's not what it used to be! To ID doctors, neither statement is particularly surprising. But why is this happening? A brief explainer, with a few recycled PowerPoint slides. Free-to-read link in replies. @akuchment

Trump administration plan to quarantine Americans suspected of having high-risk exposures to #Ebola in Kenya meets on-the-ground opposition. The plan to quarantine people exposed & treat cases abroad relies on good will the US may not have right now. washingtonpost.com/world/202…

Just wanna say that @HelenBranswell is absolutely crushing the reporting on every aspect of this Ebola outbreak. @statnews
There's no vaccine to protect against #Ebola #Bundibugyo. But there is a tiny bit of animal data suggesting Ervebo, the Ebola Zaire vaccine, might offer some cross protection & debate within scientific circles & at #WHO over whether to try to see if it might help. statnews.com/2026/05/18/ebol…

The US government is working to extricate some Americans who had potentially problematic exposures to suspected #Ebola #Bundibugyo in DRC. But it won’t talk about it. When I and other journalists asked during a #CDC press conference, we got no answers. statnews.com/2026/05/17/in-e…

ACIP voted unanimously yes here, which seems to protect coverage of Covid shots for all while only recommending it strongly for those over 65. Not clear to me how this interacts with the FDA labeling, which is more restrictive. @doritmi

ICYMI: #HHS has been circulating an FAQ explaining why Kennedy unilaterally dropped recommendations that kids & pregnant people get #Covid shots. It cites studies. But the studies it cites to suggest dangers of getting the shot during pregnancy dispel that claim. politico.com/news/2025/06/10…

This is the big one: Kennedy is firing the entire #ACIP in a move he says is needed to restore confidence in vaccines. "It scares me to think of what’s ahead,” Mike Osterholm of CIDRAP told me. statnews.com/2025/06/09/rfk-…

Calling medical journals "corrupt," Kennedy says gov't scientists may be barred from publishing in Lancet, NEJM, etc going forward. #NIH may establish its own journals, he said. Meanwhile #CDC 's Emerging Infectious Diseases journal is on the budget chopping block. statnews.com/2025/05/27/rfk-…

My colleague Lev Facher hit the road following Secretary Kennedy's MAHA tour. Among other things, Kennedy bragged about how well the response to the ongoing #measles outbreak, which has claimed 3 lives, is going.

US government funding has brought cancer science to the point where new discoveries are accelerating & the stage was set for major gains over the coming decade. But deep & puzzling cuts instigated by the new administration are throwing all that into doubt, @angRchen reports. statnews.com/2025/03/24/trum…

For a long time, food and medicines in this country were extremely toxic. Like, actually murderous. Despite that, progress in regulating them was very slow and arduous work. The FDA isn’t perfect. But wow do we need it. Here’s a thread on its history and what existed before 👇
How much do you know about food and drug safety? Where did our current regulations come from? And what were some of the greatest scandals that forced change? We covered everything from swill milk, patent medicines, and thalidomide in our class today. Here's what we covered 🧵
