Actually I wrote a couple papers on precisely what's going on here and how this stuff works

Really cool opportunity for urban researchers hosted in my department in Suzhou! I can vouch for excellent colleagues and students, and a great campus environment alongside the opportunity to come and do research for a couple of months

Logging into Twitter to celebrate doing a talk - it's amazing to have in-person academic community again!
Fantastic to have an open campus again! A huge audience to hear about @aleifjohnson ‘s fascinating research on Chinese masculinity and construction workers.
Come work in my department! Open-rank call from XJTLU China Studies - research emphasis, great campus and students with a low teaching load. One of a very few departments focusing on critical, social-science-oriented China Studies in Mainland China!

A small observation on the academic genre of the conference paper: there is something about its relative ephemerality (unless later published, but still) and its ability to deliberately address those in the room and those not in the room that makes it easy to be weaponized.

"我咽下一枚铁做的月亮
他们把它叫做螺丝
我咽下这工业的废水,失业的订单
那些低于机台的青春早早夭亡
我咽下奔波,咽下流离失所
咽下人行天桥,咽下长满水锈的生活
我再咽不下了
所有我曾经咽下的现在都从喉咙汹涌而出
在祖国的领土上铺成一首
耻辱的诗”

Gotta say I’m sad to miss this (because I’m on fieldwork)!
Join our panel on "Conducting Fieldwork in China" at 8:00-9:40 AM; April 7th in Washington 5, Marriott. Panelists include @wenjingriver @shmuelberlin @trhlan and more. #AAG2019 #aagDC
This tracks with what I see people saying in Geography as well: More publication before graduation, on a wide scale. This makes sense as a raising barrier to entry for faculty positions given a growing mismatch between # of PhDs and # of positions. insidehighered.com/news/2019…
Hiring committees in big-name departments could intentionally deescalate, but they're pressed too, and I imagine it's not easy to be telling your grad students "OK, the metric you're looking for is # of articles in core journals," then turn around & hire someone w/ 2 publications
Tfw Fei Xiaotong explains symbols in western sociology (on the way to a defense of the idea that peasants might not be stupid) in like a half page and it’s just absurdly clear compared to the originals (from 1947)
