Easily mistaken for a lump of quartz or similar rock, the Sphinx snow patch in Scotland was photographed yesterday. It is now critically small and likely to melt in the coming days.
It has not survived since 2020. Astonishing.

Yesterday was a reminder of an old problem for Scottish History. No matter how much work professional historians do on the subtleties of the past, any celebrity establishment figure with motivation, a Dacre or RS, can by-pass & drown it out easily with politicized pseudo-history.

On 25th Sept., took place the biennial survey of Arcouzan Gl. (Mt Valier) the most ‘special’ of the Pyrenean glaciers! 🧊💪
Despite all the heatwaves, it was covered in firn, but amount of remaining ice and flow are limited 🌊🔥

Castle Tioram is an ancient ruined castle in Loch Moidart one of the seats of Macdonald of Clanranald. It hit the headlines over 20 years ago when the person who claimed to own it (Lex Brown) proposed to renovate the property and convert it to residential use 1/4

@ProfJMitchell, @DavidWglasgow and I have written for @Strath_FAI on Scottish Government’s proposals for local government reform.
The proposals raise five important questions that deserve careful consideration as proposals are developed.

“There should be no reason to struggle to get into residential rehab. Money should be no object. Go and ask for help and we will make sure that you get it.”
I am genuinely astonished by this statement.
For three years, FAVOR UK’s independent advocacy service has dealt with people and families struggling to navigate Scotland’s treatment system. We have documented long waiting times, fragmented services, bureaucratic barriers, limited treatment choice and profoundly unequal access to residential rehabilitation. In some parts of Scotland, people wait months or even years.
People are not dying because they forgot to “ask for help”.
They ask for help.
Their mothers ask. Their partners ask. Their children ask. Our advocates ask on their behalf. Then they encounter assessments, thresholds, funding decisions, uncertainty, poor communication and a postcode lottery determining what treatment they can actually access. Our own advocacy evidence records people struggling specifically with access, choice, waiting times and simply finding out what happens next.
So when the Minister tells people there is “no reason” they should struggle to get into residential rehab, I have to ask whether she understands the system she is responsible for.
And “money should be no object” will come as astonishing news to families who have spent years fighting for funding.
Please don't tell desperate people simply to ask for help.
They already are.
The scandal is what happens after they ask.

This is an absolute disaster for Highland communities.
And let's be blunt about it: it's in no small part the inevitable consequence of @scotgov cutting revenue funding to intermediary organisations (& indeed local development trusts) across the H&I. ross-shirejournal.co.uk/news…

The first Mobile Physiotherapy Unit in the Highlands and Islands was inaugurated in 1950. Operated by the Inverness-shire Branch of the Red Cross, the unit was based in #Skye and was intended to free up bed space at the island's hospitals by providing treatment at the homes of discharged patients. The driver / physiotherapist when the service was launched was Miss Margaret Singman; the vehicle was a Fordson van

Yesterday I went to see Scotland’s most historically significant patch of snow. It’s one of just a few left on our hills from last year.
But will it survive to winter 2026/27?

I have several images of waterfalls in my folder of mystery photos but most don't have enough clues to help identification. The bridge in #mysteryphoto no. 436 makes it an exception. If you recognise it, please get in touch.
This is a scheduled post so I'll update you on no. 435, and this one, next week
