I found a bug in my own Linux app while using ProtonVPN.
DataSabi counted the same traffic twice: once through the VPN tunnel and again through Wi-Fi.
Fixed in v0.1.6. With a VPN on, each byte now counts once.

Which VPN do you use on Linux?

Shipping a product is exciting.
Getting it into the hands of people who didn't build it is where the real learning begins.
I'm testing DataSabi with Linux users to learn what works, what breaks, and what needs improving.
Builders: what did your first real users teach you?

Before DataSabi v0.1.5, VS Code and Claude Code showed up as "URL Handler".
The apps were fine. I was naming them from a hidden URL-handler shortcut instead of their main one.
Fixed in v0.1.5.
A confusing label often hides a smaller bug. What's the oddest one you've chased?

Built a small app for Linux users on metered data.
DataSabi shows which apps used your internet and alerts you when one app starts eating your data fast on a MiFi or hotspot.

Honest question for Linux devs:
Would you install a tool that needs sudo to set up, if you could read every file it installs and every permission it gets first?
That's the trust problem I'm working through with DataSabi. What would make it a yes?

Nigeria logged 44,678 telecom fibre cuts in nine months.
That number shapes how I build. At Arkodeon, software for businesses here assumes the connection will drop: work offline, sync when it's back.
Which tool hurts most when your internet goes down?

Linux users on a hotspot or MiFi: does your system know it's metered?
Most mobile routers don't say, so it often shows as "unknown".
DataSabi treats unknown as metered and asks you once.
Which are you on: hotspot, MiFi or home Wi-Fi?

DataSabi's collector is open source (Rust, Apache-2.0).
It measures per-app data use on Linux, locally: no packet contents, URLs or remote IPs, no telemetry.
If a tool needs elevated rights, you should be able to read it.

A small thing in DataSabi v0.1.6 I'm glad we shipped:
Update checks run at most once a day, show which network you're on, and warn you before downloading on a metered connection.
An app that watches your data shouldn't waste it.
Which app's updates have eaten your data?

Built a small app for Ubuntu users on metered data.
DataSabi shows which apps used your internet, by name not IP, and alerts you before a MiFi or hotspot bundle runs out. Free, works offline, no account. Ubuntu 22.04+.

Linux x86-64 users on Ubuntu 22.04+, Debian 12+, Linux Mint 21+, or Pop!_OS 22.04+. Fedora is in beta.
You'll need to run one terminal command and log out/in once.

I open-sourced the privileged part of my Linux app.
datasabi-collector is a Rust service that counts bytes per app per network. No packet contents, URLs or domains. It runs as its own user, not root.

On MiFi or a hotspot, data disappears and you can't tell which app took it.

My first DataSabi tester said no at first. He didn't want to run software from a stranger.
Fair. He asked for the docs, read them, then installed it on Ubuntu.
For a tool that needs elevated rights, trust comes before installs. So I wrote this:

Someone asked me to Dockerize DataSabi before trying it. Fair ask.
But to tell apps apart, it must see real network traffic and match each connection to a process. A container needs the same access.

Linux users on mobile data: when your bundle runs out early, what do you blame first?
The browser, system updates, or something you can't name?
I built DataSabi because I couldn't answer that question on my own machine.
