U.S. Merchant Marine in WWII: writers, singers & actors. Amongst the thousands who served in the United States Merchant Marine during the war were the following individuals. Thankfully, they survived and would become famous writers, singers and actors. marine-cafe.com/u-s-merchantβ¦
I just lost my grandparents within a few weeks of each other. They were married over 80 years! Nana was 97 & a talented artist. Poppa was just shy of his 100th. Poppa served as a WWII Merchant Marine & was so proud to have received his (long overdue but much appreciated) full veterans benefits in the late 1980βs. My grandparents were very proud of their great grandson @abthompson_9, a current @UsmmaO midshipman. The picture of his pinning ceremony on 9/11/26 when he was sworn in to the @navy_reserve was one of the last things Poppa was shown before he passed in the early morning hours on 9/12/26. I am grateful for his service to our great Nation. I am grateful to @POTUS for the Merchant Mariners of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act & wish Poppa couldβve been presented with his replica copy while he was still living. Iβm grateful to the folks at @DOTMARAD @USCG @USNavy @USDOT & @DeptofWar who continue to recognize & advocate for our #MerchantMarines. Iβm grateful to @SecDuffy @USMMWWII & @johnkonrad for keeping the conversation going about the vital role of the #USMM #InPeaceAndWar. #FairWindsAndFollowingSeas #EightBellsAndAllIsWell Poppa & rest easy Nana. πβ€οΈπΊπΈβοΈπ

It has been a joy & privilege to be in NY this weekend. Reflecting on 9/11β¦ I will #neverforget. This September 11th, I had the honor of watching @abthompson_9 be sworn in to the @navy_reserve during his pinning ceremony. Today, I got to watch he & his @USMMAFootball team pay tribute to the lives lost & honor those who responded 25 years ago. They also dominated the football field & tied the Academyβs scoring record! Many Americans have no idea what the #MerchantMarines do or how important they are to our National Security & economic success. Many Americans have no idea that the @UsmmaO exists, or that itβs the only Federal Service Academy that has sent Midshipmen out to serve in extraordinary ways as duty calls. Whether itβs the 142 cadet-midshipmen who lost their lives during WWII, or the midshipmen, faculty & staff who responded on 9/11, USMMA exemplifies their motto of #ActaNonVerba - deeds not words. This weekend Iβve remembered & this weekend Iβve been so proud of my son. πKβοΈPπΊπΈ

Ahead of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, 2,977 drones lit up the sky over New York Harbor, each representing a life lost on that tragic day.
This breathtaking tribute stands as a solemn reminder of Americaβs resilience and the extraordinary courage of the heroes and first responders who gave everything.
To the victims, their families, and all who served: We will never forget.

βAll available boats. This is the United States Coast Guard. Anyone wanting to help with the evacuation of Lower Manhattan, report to Governors Island.β
The call went out after the Twin Towers had collapsed on September 11, 2001.
People were covered in dust and debris, standing along the waterfront with no clear way out. Bridges, tunnels and much of the transit system were closed, leaving Lower Manhattan cut off.
Then the boats started coming.
Ferries, tugboats, fireboats, private yachts and other vessels pulled up to the shore. Crews took strangers aboard and carried them across the harbor to safety.
In less than nine hours, an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 people were evacuated by boat.
Most of the people on those boats were strangers to each other. That day, they simply helped get each other home.

Years ago when I was a teacher the school district administrators told us we were not allowed to talk about 9/11 as it may upset the kids. I taught high school & said we all should be upset by 9/11. Iβve never regretted talking to people including my own children, former students, friends, colleagues & strangers about 9/11. I will #neverforget

An only child. They told her to go back upstairs. She almost got out.
Never forget her name. Never forget who did this.
