Jensen traces Taiwan's chip dominance back to an unlikely source: Philips, the Dutch consumer electronics giant he calls "the GE of Europe." Philips, he says, is "the parent company that spun the fab that became TSMC, and spun off the semiconductor manufacturing equipment that became ASML." The seed was planted in the 1950s by K.T. Li, who set out to bring science and technology manufacturing to Taiwan and lured Philips over. Then came perfect timing with the PC revolution: IBM opened the specs for IBM compatible chipsets, and Taiwanese engineers took that open spec and designed the chipsets "manufactured at TSMC and UMC."
