What an injustice to put an elderly man behind bars for daring to publish the facts and then for his daughter to fall ill and despite forceful arguments for his release, Jimmy Lai remains unable to join his family at this critical moment. Hoping for the best. #FreeJimmyLai
Earlier this year, Claire Lai was diagnosed with cancer. She recently began treatment in the UK.
Her father heard the news from a prison cell in Hong Kong, where he has been held for nearly 6 years.
In an interview with @MaryMargOlohan of @realDailyWire, Claire said the hardest part has been hearing about her “dad crying whenever he talks about it.”

#Japan: Russia must immediately release a Japanese journalist detained on Tuesday in the far-eastern island of Sakhalin on suspicion of espionage ⤵️
#Russia must immediately release a Japanese journalist detained on Tuesday in the far-eastern island of Sakhalin on suspicion of espionage.
The journalist, identified by media as Yuki Imai, is believed to be a correspondent for the Hokkaido Shimbun newspaper, a regional outlet for Japan’s northern island.
“It is deeply chilling to see reports that a foreign journalist has been arrested in Russia and could be charged with espionage.” said CPJ's Fiona O’Brien.
“Images of a man being put into a cage, and the threat of a long period of pre-trial detention, are chillingly reminiscent of the ordeal U.S. journalist Evan Gershkovich went through from 2023, when he was also held in Russia on sham charges of espionage. Journalists must not be used as leverage in wider geopolitical disputes.”

#Afghanistan: The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on Taliban authorities to immediately and unconditionally restore the FM radio transmissions of British public broadcaster BBC across Afghanistan, end the devastating crackdown on independent media, and cease restricting Afghan’s access to independent news and information.
On October 13, the Taliban confirmed that they had suspended BBC World Service programming from FM radio transmitters across Afghanistan, affecting the broadcaster’s Dari, Pashto, and English-language services, according to the BBC and news reports.
“By forcing BBC off Afghanistan’s FM broadcasts, the Taliban are further shrinking an already devastated space for independent journalism in the country,” said Waliullah Rahmani, CPJ’s Afghanistan and Pakistan representative. “The Taliban must immediately reverse the suspension, explain the legal basis for their action, and end their systematic obstruction of Afghans’ access to independent information.”

#India: CPJ is deeply concerned by reports that women journalists — including @NDTV's Vasudha Venugopal (@Vasudha156) and @TanushkaDutta, @MaktoobMedia’s Fida Fathima, Nada Saeeda, and Akhtarisa Ansari and The @WashingtonPost columnist @RanaAyyub — have faced heckling, abuse, and threats while covering protests in New Delhi.
Heckling, verbal abuse, and threats are not harmless: They can escalate into physical attacks and put journalists’ safety at risk, particularly in volatile protest settings. Everyone must respect journalists’ right to report, regardless of whether they agree with their coverage. Authorities must ensure journalists can work safely without intimidation and threats.

#Pakistan: CPJ is closely monitoring the situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa following the federal government's imposition of emergency rule in the province. We are deeply concerned by reports of major internet disruptions due to ongoing political instability in the province.
Communications blackout pose a grave threat to press freedom, preventing journalists from reporting independently and safely during such a critical period of political instability. Pakistani authorities must immediately restore full connectivity across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and ensure journalists have unhindered access to information.

⚠️ Confirmed: Network data show a major disruption to internet connectivity in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, #Pakistan, as President Zardari imposes emergency rule, suspending the provincial government led by jailed former PM Imran Khan's PTI amid protests demanding his release
#India: At least six journalists, including those from mainstream news organisations such as The @IndianExpress and Hindustan Times (@htTweets), were temporarily detained by Delhi Police while covering the second day of protests in New Delhi.
CPJ calls on @DelhiPolice to honour the government’s assurance to the Supreme Court that journalists will not be impeded in their professional duties and to refrain from targeting journalists covering the protests.
As the world’s largest democracy, India has a special responsibility to uphold press freedom and protect journalists’ constitutional right to report freely and without interference.

#India: CPJ calls on @DelhiPolice to immediately release all detained journalists and media workers, return their equipment, investigate reports of physical abuse, and allow the press to cover the ongoing protests in New Delhi and the police response without interference.
CPJ is closely monitoring the situation and has confirmed the detention of Newslaundry reporters Ashwine Kumar Singh, Astha Savyasachi, and Anmol Pritam, and Scroll reporter Ayush Tiwari. We are working to identify other detained journalists and media workers. Newslaundry has also reported that police seized its reporters’ phones, while other reports indicate that journalists were physically manhandled.
A free and independent press is essential to a democracy. CPJ urges authorities in India to respect journalists’ and media workers’ ability to report in the public interest and to ensure their safety while doing so.

"Journalists, human rights defenders, researchers and those who disclose information in good faith and in the public interest need effective safeguards" - UN special rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression @SRfreedex_LMG
nitter.cf/SRfreedex_LMG/status/2…
A freedom of information law should, first and foremost, guarantee the right to know.
Together with the UN Special Rapporteurs on the rights of persons with disabilities and on human rights defenders, we sent OL MYS 1/2026 to the Government of Malaysia concerning the Freedom of Information Bill 2026.
We recognise efforts to advance transparency, while encouraging the Malaysian authorities to review the Bill so that it fully guarantees the right of access to information.
Our communication identifies important concerns:
The Bill does not clearly recognise a substantive and enforceable right of access to information; it restricts who may request information; requires proof of identity, citizenship and, in some circumstances, the purpose of a request; preserves broad exemptions; and raises concerns regarding independent oversight.
We are also concerned that some provisions could impose criminal liability for the subsequent use or dissemination of lawfully obtained information, with penalties of up to five years’ imprisonment.
Access to information should be guided by the principle of maximum disclosure. Exceptions should be narrowly drawn, based on demonstrable harm and subject to consideration of the public interest.
Journalists, human rights defenders, researchers and those who disclose information in good faith and in the public interest need effective safeguards.
Also, an independent oversight body is required to verify compliance with obligations regarding access to information.
We call on the Malaysian authorities to use the legislative review process to strengthen the Bill, ensure genuinely independent oversight and bring the future framework fully into line with international human rights standards.
